Lancashire League ... World XI

Post by Clarets4me » Sat May 18, 2019 4:33 pm

If you could put an all-time World XI of the " Greats " who played in the Lancashire League at some point, you'd have some team ... Alan Border, Clive Lloyd, Viv Richards, Learie Constantine, Steve Waugh, Joel Garner, Michael Holding, Andy Roberts, DK Lillee, Sydney Barnes, Jimmy Anderson, Allan Donald and Shane Warne for starters ...

Some real legends there. Obviously not in same class Mike Wakinson was playing at Burnley after a game a few years back smashing the ball all over and hitting cars. Would have loved to have seen some of those greats. Cricket has changed and they all get central contracts I think

Lance Gibbs is Clive Lloyds cousin and reportedly gave him his bats from his kit contract as he very rarely used them.

My dad always told me that Bill Alley was as good a pro as Colne ever had but as we moved to Kent over 50 years ago when I was 6 I can’t really add anything else to the thread.

Sobers played for Radcliffe in the CLL.

Franklyn Stephenson another for the list, top pro. One of the best slower balls going.

According to my grandad who’s old enough to remember Amar Singh was a tremendous pro for Colne in the 30s at about the same time Constantine was playing for Nelson.

Fred Trueman sub-pro'd for Colne once as well. But Amar Singh and Bill Alley are probably the two greatest. Alan Wharton was the only amateur Colne player who went on to play for England.

Accy it was.

Certainly looks like a list of top players who played in the Lancs league rather than the best pro's the Lancs league ever had.

That's a very important distinction to make, some of the greats did not make great " Professionals " in the League, due to attitude, the stage they were at in their career etc ...

I've heard of a certain " Pro " from the Indian sub-continent who did nothing but play on match days and then sit in his accomodation and watch video's all day, whereas I can imagine certain Australian's from all era's having local fathers keeping a very close eye on their daughters .... :D

Certainly several players especially from Australia came into the league at 18 or 19 long before they developed into world class stars (Shane Warne and Ian Chappell for example} however Wes Hall and Charlie Griffith have to be included in a Word Eleven imo

Warne played for Accrington. I don't think he did enough that season to suggest just how good he was going to be. Warne and Anderson became the finest bowlers of their kind that I've ever seen.

So difficult to say really given the quality back in the 60s when I first went. In my early days we had the likes of Basil Butcher, Ian Chappell, Eddie Barlow, Conrad Hunte, Seymour Nurse. They are just a few names off the top of my head. Nurse passed away a couple of weeks ago.

It's incredible isn't it Cheshireclaret? And at a time where you could only hit a six on selected grounds. My dad said it made no difference because he rarely lifted the ball. I've just googled it and he had a test average of 58.61. Frank Worrell was the only one of the three Ws I saw play.

Didn't Eli claim a catch off Sobers, as he had clattered a six against the scoreboard and Eli caught the ball one handed as it bounced off? :D

He never told me that one but his Sobers story was a part of his after dinner speech as was Accrington tea ladies doing their best to tip the balance by giving the opposition extra large pieces of slab cake to slow them down. Eli told me it knocked 5 mph of his speed and two overs off his opening spell. :D
