Re: Good grief !
Really is time to move on. Wonder if the new recruitment guy had much to do with this development. Let’s dust down those old player files and see what we can rekindle ...... I wonder what Derek Riordan is doing these days

We all know we tried very hard to get Dawson a year ago as well as back in 2014. Wouldn’t surprise me to still have an interest.

Or it could be Dyche has told different recruitment people this is a player he wants

Clearly is but for whatever reason some people just want to have a go at the club at any possible opportunity.claretonthecoast1882 wrote:Or it could be Dyche has told different recruitment people this is a player he wants

It's the fee that bothers me, because that will no doubt be a huge chunk of our spending money. Unless Tarks is going and we'll only sell if we bring someone in first.

Re: Good grief !
Agreed. Can see the logic (in going after a player long admired - not the position of centre half). If Dyche likes him and has done for a while and there's a chance to get him due to WBA's cost-cutting then get it done. But don't mess around trying to get him on the cheap all summer.ClaretTony wrote:We all know we tried very hard to get Dawson a year ago as well as back in 2014. Re: Good grief !
Possibly Dyche is expecting Tarkowski to move and wants a replacement in before it happens.
Possibly Dyche is thinking that he wants to move to a 3-5-2 formation and he needs an extra CB to do so (thus allowing Dunne to have 12 months in the Championship next season to continue his development).
Possibly Dyche wants a bit of extra cover for RB but doesn’t want to use too much of his transfer budget to do so; this move could be a “2 for 1” option.
All I know is that if Dyche is so insistent on getting Dawson into the club then we should move heaven and earth to do it for him. He deserves our trust- he’s earned it the hard way over nearly SIX years!

I very much doubt we would pay £15m cash up front. I don't think there are many football transfers where the full 'deal' is paid up front....FactualFrank wrote:It's the fee that bothers me, because that will no doubt be a huge chunk of our spending money. Re: Good grief !
If there is truth in this and we get him, then the manager will be happy. If there is no truth in this and the bed wetters get all frothy then the normal people will be happy due to be amused at them.
Anyone mentioned there would be no profit on the signing as that is how every signing should be judged.

Re: Good grief !
If it's true then it suggests one of our centre halves is on their way out. Probably Tarkowski but maybe Gibson.

Honestly I think the only option is hire a hypnotist and get him to make Dyche forget that West Bromwich Albion FC exists. It’s the only way.

I wish I could remember the Wigan player or the Wigan fans name on twitter who asked the idiot if there was anything in the ***** rumour signing for Wigan, Nixon told him no nothing in it all, next minute the player is holding a scarf above his head in a shirt having signed and the lad was blocked.
Re: Good grief !
Or for Dyche to realise there is a whole world of centre halves out there other than Craig Dawson.SGr wrote:Honestly I think the only option is hire a hypnotist and get him to make Dyche forget that West Bromwich Albion FC exists. It’s the only way.

Re: Good grief !
I personally think Dawson's been bang average in the Championship from what I've seen of him this year. Not sure how long he has left on his contract but £15m seems quite excessive IMO.

Re: Good grief !
Good player and can fill in across the back, no issues - 15 mill perhaps a little too much though
Re: Good grief !
The Sun says that a bid is intended, not that it has been made. So presumably they've been talking to Sean Dyche and he has told them all his plans? Is that how he normally does it? Either that, or the Sun has made something up - surely not?
Re: Good grief !
Why did we not just sign Dawson in the summer instead of Gibson?
Re: Good grief !
If Tarks goes I wouldn't be unhappy with Ben Mee, Gibson and Dawson, with Long as well.
The way Tarks has played in parts of this season, if Gibson fulfils his promise I don't think we'd be weaker at all.

Gibson though is left sided like Ben ... so isn't a swap for TarkaGuich wrote:If Tarks goes I wouldn't be unhappy with Ben Mee, Gibson and Dawson, with Long as well.

Re: Good grief !
Let's also bear in mind that Dawson has played quite a bit at right back, (an area that many consider to need strengthening), so it would give us an additional option / cover there.
2 for 1- A centre back and a full back doesn't quite sound so expensive - though obviously he can't play in both positions in the same line-up, (before someone points that out!!)

Not Dawson please, sick of hearing his name mentioned, we can do much better than an average Championship CB like him, he isn't worth anywhere near the mentioned asking price, I wonder how long it will be before the Jay Rod saga will be re opened, leave well alone Sean.

Wouldn’t be at all surprised if Palace or Bournemouth or maybe Watford put a decent offer in for Tarky . Our style doesn’t really let his game develop . Though he’s mainly very good , he’s not the quickest and doesn’t really have goals in him . Still like him to stay though

One of the reasons he pushed for a move from Brentford was for family reasons (his mum)

West Brom fans laughing at us with the usual 'I will drive him there myself for 15m'.
'I will carry him on my back all the way there for that much'.
I can't see Garlick sanctioning 15m for a 29yr old with one year left on his contract. No resale value at all.

Re: Good grief !
I've nothing against Dawson, but we need to improve our starting XI.
Would Dawson displace any of our defence, would he improve it if he did.
No he would't.
It would be a complete waste of money. We desperately need to strengthen the midfield. The more we spend on benchwarmers, the less we have left, it's bloody simple really.

He's not really a modern full back though, he's a right back for a manager who used to like to play 4 centre halves (halfs?) in defence.nil_desperandum wrote:Let's also bear in mind that Dawson has played quite a bit at right back, (an area that many consider to need strengthening), so it would give us an additional option / cover there.

Re: Good grief !
We probably will need an experienced CB as cover for when Tarks goes. He has to if he is serious about playing for England. I think 15 mill is far too much. The fee we get for Tarks has to be 30 mill, surely.

Can't see Tarks playing for England anytime soon with Stones, Gomez, Maguire and Keane all ahead of him. Let's be honest he has a much higher chance of an England call-up if he's playing at Goodison.
