Only in a caretaker role, she won’t have any power after 7th (although she hasn’t really had any power since she threw away her majority in the commons by holding an unnecessary election).dsr wrote:I think she's staying on as PM until the Tory leadership election is complete.

Don't like how she has handled things but to be fair, she was brave enough to step up when others wouldn't, and realistically it was always going to go this way. I think regardless of who was PM, this would of been the outcome

I agree she won't have any power, and I agree that she hasn't been able to do anything since her Brexit deal failed and failed and failed to win a majority. Any other PM would have resigned long ago.martin_p wrote:Only in a caretaker role, she won’t have any power after 7th (although she hasn’t really had any power since she threw away her majority in the commons by holding an unnecessary election).
But presumably her last act to help out the Tory party (unless she has been a socialist mole all along!) will be to stay there until they have decided who has to replace her. If she resigns both jobs at once, then someone will have to be appointed - presumably the Tories' deputy leader - who is that?

Absolutely she’ll be in the role until a successor is appointed, but it’ll almost be a ceremonial role after 7th. It essentially means paralysis until the end of July, the summer recess may as well start now.dsr wrote:I agree she won't have any power, and I agree that she hasn't been able to do anything since her Brexit deal failed and failed and failed to win a majority. Re: May quits
It'll have to be a Brexiteer for the sake of the Tory party. Because all those votes that have defected to the Brexit party - if there isn't a Brexit supporter at the helm when the next general election comes round, then many of them won't come back.Steve1956 wrote:Get a prominent brexiteer and leave with no deal on The 31st of October...simples.
I expect it will be Boris. The MPs won't dare to leave him off the final two ballot (unless they can find a bit of dirty on him, and they can find a suitable Brexiteer candidate to put on the paper) and he would win the members' vote. If not him, then either Javid or Raab.

Re: May quits
I’m no fan of these arsewipes but she was dealt the worst hand in political history.
She then chose to play it blind by going to the polls and getting her buttkicked.
Feel for her because she knows what damage a no deal is going to do to Britain and has tried to get any deal through. With so many factions shouting different causes she was well and truly screwed.
If you are a working man.....worry.

Re: May quits
I thought that she wanted and applied for the job? If she didn't understand the seriousness of the situation and how difficult it was going to be then she clearly wasn't up to the job. And then to make matters worse she chose - against much advice - to throw her Parliamentary majority / advantage away.Caballo wrote:I'm no May fan but that's a touch unfair, when you're handed a sh1t sandwich I'd imagine no amount of seasoning will make it taste nice.
In retrospect she will probably reflect that that was the time to resign rather than continue to embarrass herself taking the country on a road to nowhere for a further 2 years.

End of the day, her decision to call an election when she had a majority was the biggest disaster for her (and arguably the country)

Problem for Tories is that if Johnson is elected by members they will almost certainly not be able to command a majority in the Commons since several MPs will defect to ChangeUk or sit as independents.dsr wrote: I expect it will be Boris. Re: May quits
For what its worth, the best Conservative leader would probably be Rory Stewart (he's had a good Brexit) but both Johnson or Gove might be able to get stuff that we through as they are actual Brexiteers.
But hells bells, when you are typing that Johnson is actually better than the alternatives, it shows just how far we have fallen.

Re: May quits
Typically simplistic brexit thinking. How will the mathematics in Parliament change between now and the end of October?. Whoever becomes leader the maths against "no deal" will still be the same, and there's no chance now (I assume) of a general election in the interim period, since the Tories will be fighting a leadership campaign.Steve1956 wrote:Get a prominent brexiteer and leave with no deal on The 31st of October...simples.

Good riddance to a dreadful politician and the worst prime minister in modern times.
I’d usually be happy about someone like her stepping down, but looking at the potential replacements, there’s a solid chance that the next one will be even worse.
God help us.

Re: May quits
To put UK politics into perspective.
Theresa May has been in office longer than twenty post-war Italian prime ministers.
I know Italy's a basket case so comparisons are futile, but it highlights the relative stability of our PM'S in the main,of course these aren't normal times.
On a side note yet another PM the Queen has outlasted,i think the next one will be her 13th,don't know if that's a good or bad omen.
