Re: The next lib dem leader
I understand a recently retired local Councillor, Tom Porter, has ruled himself out ... according to the " Independent "
" I have been approached by more than one activist, asking if I would be prepared to let my name go forward. Whilst frightfully honoured and terribly proud to have been spoken of in terms of the Leadership, I have decided not to run. I'm at an age where I'm hoping to spend a lot more time with my family, including my newly arrived second grand-daughter. I'm sure the party will choose wisely, and whoever emerges as our new Leader will have my full support."
" The BBC's Laura Kuenssberg reported that, " Sources close to 65 year old Mr Porter indicated that he did not feel he could replicate the levels of " sheer miserableness ", shown by Vince Cable, and that it was his wife Deborah, 35, and the advice of his Doctor's that were instrumental in his decision not to run."
Seasoned Political commentators have bemoaned the fact that Mr Porter's withdrawal from the race deprives the members of a hugely experienced Candidate with a truly International outlook. ITV's Robert Peston tweeted, that " Porter's long career included much classified work for the Ministry of Defence, which still cannot be discussed due to the Official Secret's Act. " The Independent " can reveal that he was also a technical advisor to the Royal Australian Navy for a period. A respected historian, ( specialising in the Second World War), he is also a published " Man of letters " , a committed Oenophile and an acknowledged Film critic.. Typically modest, he has never allowed his details to be published in " Who's Who ". "
Service to the nation appears to run in the family, Mr Porter's Grandfather served in the Royal Norfolk Regiment, amongst whose duties in the late months of the war, were to guard the Royal Family at Sandringham. In their " Downtime ", the soldiers were often invited to participate in the King's cricket matches, in Sandringham's immaculately maintained grounds. According to Ingid Sewell's " Royal Family at War " ( 1998 - Faber & Faber ), the handsome Cpl. Porter was a particular favorite of the young Princess Elizabeth, then 17, who was seen to visably blush in his presence. According to friends, a framed scorecard featuring the legend " HRH George VI - c. HRH Princess Elizabeth - b. Cpl.Porter 17 " , dated 17th August 1944, takes pride of place in Tom Porter's book-lined Study ....

If they've got any sense you'll be correct, she's certainly someone who could bring a new approach and positivity to politics, she's also very engaged on mental health issues and climate change, which like everything else is being sidelined due to brexit.Lancasterclaret wrote:It will be Jo Swinson, the current deputy

Re: The next lib dem leader
In all seriousness, Norman Lamb, MP for North Norfolk, is an extremely capable man, and the Lib-Dems could do far worse ....

He'd be a safe pair of hands but i'm not convinced he'll stand for the leadership again.Clarets4me wrote:In all seriousness, Norman Lamb, MP for North Norfolk, is an extremely capable man, and the Lib-Dems could do far worse ....

Re: The next lib dem leader
So all revealed it will be Jo Swinson, good choice by the LD'S,she's relatively young compared to Boris and Corbyn, and obviously is female, the 1st woman to lead the LibDems, does this leave Labour as the only major UK party not to have elected a female leader, hardly a strong advocate for the equality they're constantly harping on about is it.

Re: The next lib dem leader
I wonder how the Tory press are going to smear Swinson if the Lib Dems become a thread to the Conservatives. Any ideas?

If you want to make the number of female leaders a criticism then by all means, but until 2017 the UK had elected just as many female Prime Ministers as the bastion of equality that is Pakistan.tiger76 wrote:So all revealed it will be Jo Swinson, good choice by the LD'S,she's relatively young compared to Boris and Corbyn, and obviously is female, the 1st woman to lead the LibDems, does this leave Labour as the only major UK party not to have elected a female leader, hardly a strong advocate for the equality they're constantly harping on about is it.

Re: The next lib dem leader
That's true but it's strange that Labour, which has quite rightly championed equality for many decades, has for whatever reason never had a female in the top job,i'm sure at some point this will change with the number of female MP'S they now have,if i was too throw a curve ball into the mix, maybe AWS isn't the best way to ensure females will rise to the top,Jo Swinson is a prime example she has had to fight tooth and nail throughout her career.Imploding Turtle wrote:If you want to make the number of female leaders a criticism then by all means, but until 2017 the UK had elected just as many female Prime Ministers as the bastion of equality that is Pakistan.
Even losing her seat to the SNP in 2015,and regaining it in the snap GE of 2017,just reading her Wiki page,i'm liking the cut of her jib,she opposes positive discrimination believing it is tokenist towards women,i have some sympathy with that viewpoint,we live in a meritocracy.
Unlike many of the old Etonians she has had a job outwith politics as well,i hope she is a breath of fresh air in Westminster, the country certainly needs a positive vision, cos i see little evidence that Boris the buffoon,or Corbyn the clown can offer a new style of politics, away from the yah-boo nonsense that's been served up for years.
I have never voted LibDem yet but as they say there's a first time for everything.
Re: The next lib dem leader
Interesting to see that Labour started the attack ads almost as soon as Swinson was appointed.
Not sure whether this is indicative of Labour's current strategy, the Conservatives being leaderless, the Lib Dems being more of a threat to Labour, Swinson being more right than left or something completely different.

Re: The next lib dem leader
i was listening to this woman after her victory, blathering on about we will do whatever it takes to stop Brexit. Of course this is the party's stance but I ask myself why would a party with the word Democrat in it fight tooth and nail to stop something that a democratic decision has been made on? Surely they should either go back to being the plain Liberals or change to Liberal Undemocrats? In any other walk of life they would be fined under trades descriptions.
Horrible power seeking, policy changing party that will do anything to grab a bit of influence. Wouldn't vote for them if they were the only party in the country.

Until she gets a sniff of power sharing then everything will be drooped as usual.tiger76 wrote:If they've got any sense you'll be correct, she's certainly someone who could bring a new approach and positivity to politics, she's also very engaged on mental health issues and climate change, which like everything else is being sidelined due to brexit.

Re: The next lib dem leader
And it looks like her main priority is to stop brexit not deal with
those big issues you mention.
I think that's a pathetic thing for a new leader of a political party to say in her opening speech.
Yes, there is a lot of support for her party at the moment but that is only because of the mess that is called the Labour Party.
Personally I think her opening gambit will backfire. Why? Because 17.4 million people is a lot!
