Re: Lowerhouse v Burnley Cricket Rivalry
There are certainly some who enjoy Burnley losing at cricket for some odd reason, but then there are some on here who enjoy Burnley losing at football so pass trying to understand them.
Re: Lowerhouse v Burnley Cricket Rivalry
Just like any local rivalry really. Theres 2 teams ( well 1 really ) in the town so theres always going to be some banter between the 2.
It's a great family day out down the house, if the suns out, theres no better way to soak up the sun with a few beers, they certainly know how to host a good day at the cricket.
Think they regularly got over 1k on for the 20/20, and if i remember correctly over 2.5k attended the worsley cup final last year.
Obviously football will have an effect on the crowds in August

Re: Lowerhouse v Burnley Cricket Rivalry
I'm a casual fan but Lowerhouse is a really well run club and a cracking day out when the weathers right. That said if I had to pick a side it'd be Burnley as I spent a lot of my childhood up that way and had many a kick about on the cricket field in the off season. To be honest there are plenty of cricketing options to say Burnley is a relatively small town.

I’ve watched cricket at Burnley with a crowd in excess of 10,000. Mind you, that’s a good few years ago.

A couple of years back, Lowerhouse had more there for the bonfire and fireworks display than watched Rovers at home a couple of days apart

I'll watch both, some weekends I'll watch half at one and half at another if they're both decent games but in general I prefer it down Lowerhouse as its better for the kids to play
There a certainly a few that really , really don't like each other but its all a bit of fun. Both have been very successful over the last 10-15 years which is great for local cricket

I prefer to watch Burnley but my daughter prefers Lowerhouse as said its more family oriented and there are always other children to play with. Maybe Lowerhouse has touch more open space where its safe for kids to play in eyesight

Yes, my Mrs hates the steps at Burnley and the fact there's not a lot of area for the kids to play.
Then again, it is a cricket ground and not a park

Agreed it is a cricket ground but if you spend a few hours down there kids some become fidgety and bored if there is nothing for them to do.Burnley1989 wrote:Yes, my Mrs hates the steps at Burnley and the fact there's not a lot of area for the kids to play.

To some people it matters more than others, but I can assure you, to the players, it matters. Non of this fighting in lumps like the football, mind.
We beat our 2004 record gate of £4951.50 (£3 Gate) at last years final £6469. (£4 adult, £2 concession). It was a great spectacle and the first Lowerhouse Burnley Derby final, ever.MACCA wrote:Just like any local rivalry really. Had to work that day, disappointed to miss out but that sum of money must be massive for the club as it probably wont be cheap putting numerous teams out. Hope the weather keeps for the 20/20

Re: Lowerhouse v Burnley Cricket Rivalry
Lowerhouse is a brilliant club and set up, both on and off the field and only really lacks a plusher bar/clubhouse/tea room to cater properly and more "comfortably" for the large numbers who turn up, especially at the 20/20s (as advertised above) which if the weather is good are a fantastic and very lively evening! Some of the other clubs do put in a lot of effort, but don't seem to get anything like the numbers and they are always amazed at how well supported the 'Ouse is. It helps having zillions of kids in all age brackets up to seniors playing games pretty much every single night of the week (often two games side by side) which then creates interest among other family members who will come along to watch them play and to watch other more senior matches at week end. The "derby" rivalry with Burnley is very much tongue in cheek imo as we want to see ALL teams thriving, but Burnley don't really get the levels of support Lowerhouse get (yet still make an absolute fortune via home games at the Turf ).

Re: Lowerhouse v Burnley Cricket Rivalry
To be fair for most of Lowerhouse's history any 'rivalry' would have been similar to, say, Stockport County and Manchester United with the 'ouse's ambition every season being to not finish bottom whilst Burnley were almost always up at the top end of the table. It is only in the last 25 years that the scales have become more balanced with the 2 clubs, probably, leading the Lancashire League revenue table by some margin. Lowerhouse because of their amazing support at all levels and Burnley because of it's earnings on BFC matchdays

Re: Lowerhouse v Burnley Cricket Rivalry
First derby of the season tomorrow down at Turf Moor, weather permitting. Burnley without Joey Marshall and Cole Hayman could struggle. On the plus side, sub pro Daryn Smit is again available for this match.
Re: Lowerhouse v Burnley Cricket Rivalry
When I travel to Burnley from Lowerhouse for the Derby I get there hours before the game hang around aimlessly ring for a taxi ask them to send a dodgy minibus and go to Burnley via Worsthorne. For added spice I report the minibus as having a bold tyre so there is a heavy police presence and escort. Best to get to Burnley two hours early. Repeat in reverse at game end.

All credit to Lowerhouse. I remember going to watch some matches there in the 90s and they were something of a basket case. But hopefully teams across the country can try and emulate what they've done.
The article is correct to criticise the ECB though, they've done a real disservice to the game.

Re: Lowerhouse v Burnley Cricket Rivalry
I’d partially agree with you. The people running Burnley Cricket Club for years thought they were a cut above. Posher? I’d probably use the word snobbery. If it be your will wrote:My interpretation of the rivalry would be similar to Man U and Man C (before the UAE took it over)
Burnley were always seen as posher, more corporate, more respectable, richer and more successful; Lowerhouse was the real Burnley team.
But Burnley were still THE team. As far as I can remember they’ve generally had a very good team and there was a time when they were able to poach any decent player that came Lowerhouse’s way.
That’s changed now and much of that is down to the likes of David Wren & Stan Heaton who have turned Lowerhouse into a club far better than I ever thought possible.
It was the saddest of days when Dave passed away suddenly but I don’t think for one minute that those running Lowerhouse will allow all his good work to slide, in fact I’m absolutely sure they will build on it.

Post 39 is pretty much spot on.
Lowerhouse were a pathetic club for most of their existence. A few pissheads by the bar were as good as they got.
The turnaround on both the playing side and getting seemingly every person from the local community involved is testament to the people involved.
A lot of other clubs are trying to follow their example now.

Daryn Smit beats Lowerhouse. One man show today. We had Burnley in all sorts of trouble..pinned down and let it slip with poor bowling at the death when Smit took over. The chase never got going it seems and fell 33 short in the same overs. Smit taking 5 wickets to add to his display with the bat.
Struggling to find the killer instinct we had last season.

Well i only saw the Burnley innings and i was happy after 22 overs when Burnley were only 78...to let them get 143 was criminal. That is where the game was lost..and its not the first time.We let Norden do the same.
