Signing players past their best
Signing players past their best
IMO we started a worrying trend last season. Signing players well past their best. Lennon, Hart, and Crouch.
Those signings remind me of Sunderland’s transfers. Signing players like Rodwell, Richardson etc. Players well past their best.
I’d much rather we sign proven championship players like Wood or Taylor, or young hungry players. Or even a foreigner here and there.
Players like crouch earn big money and provide little.
It can work to a degree if they still have something to offer. Bardsley is a fine example of that. But I hope we move away from those types of players because I think it just leads to relegation

Re: Signing players past their best
Not sure Hart is past his best, was arguably one of our better players, which I'm sure the ratings confirm.
Crouch I agree with, Lennon was exciting for me but hasn't made any real impact.
We should always be aiming to take the top end EFL players and mould them into our style.
Older heads do matter though and I fully support a "dressing room" type transfer but the Crouch one for me stinks of Dyche doing his mate a favour.
Time will tell.

Hart has won the premier league. He now the 3rd best keeper at Burnley. I think he’s past his bestClaretAndJew wrote:Not sure Hart is past his best, was arguably one of our better players, which I'm sure the ratings confirm.

We sign players past their best because we are Burnley FC. If we signed players at their best, we'll be Manchester City.

Because we didn’t play them. It’s a trend I’d like to see us move away from
Hart wouldn’t get in any bottom 14 club, he can’t get in at Burnley.
We are not Man City but we can buy championship players not past their best like wood and Taylor

I see Bardsley wasn’t on the original list. Could well have gone down without him.

Mike Summerbee was just about worth a punt. Still didn’t score a goal’ though, in over fifty appearances.

Re: Signing players past their best
Ref Sunderland, Rodwell wasn't definitely past his best and it would appear there was some sort of conflict between him and the manager.
His ridiculous wage bill probably didn't help either.

Re: Signing players past their best
Gerry Gow, Steve Daley, Steve Taylor (2nd spell), Peter Daniel, Steve Thompson, Gazza to name but a few.
Joe Hart certainly didn't come into my mind.
Life is tough for some UTC posters.

I saw just about every home match and quite a few away games in the relegation season of 1975-76. Mike Summerbee was about the best player.dermotdermot wrote:Mike Summerbee was just about worth a punt. Still didn’t score a goal’ though, in over fifty appearances.

I think Sean and his staff are on record talking about having a mix of youth and experience (although I don't think they use those terms) and I think we strike the balance fairly well.
As has been stated, we buy players who are past their best because we're Burnley FC.
TBH I don't see any "trend" - I only see us buying what is required and keeping a mixture that depends to a certain extent on our budget and pulling power.

Re: Signing players past their best
I dont think Lennon has been a bad signing at all.
Certainly not a star performer but he has filled in where we were desperately short. He wont have cost us an arm and a leg like the Jermain Defoes of this world either

Hart served a purpose.
Crouch is good at blogging
Lennon was a good gamble but if he wants to move on then so be it

Re: Signing players past their best
Hi Inchy, I think the simple response is we signed these players with many international caps and team trophies between them because that's where we are budget wise. Yes, of course, they are towards the end of their careers - we could say, heading down the slope on the other side of the peak, maybe even in rapid decline.Inchy wrote:IMO we started a worrying trend last season. Burnley are doing fantastically well the past few seasons developing players who can win international caps. Of course, when we do this, their next career move is, almost inevitably, to a bigger club. To maintain a successful team we also need some experienced professionals, amongst other things it can help the younger players develop. Now we are in the Premier League the experienced pros will often be the guys whose international careers are at an end - Joe Hart, I believe, retains the ambition to get back into the international squad (I wish him well).
So long as we aren't paying out "current international" wages - which, of course, we aren't - there can still be 1 or 2 good seasons from these older guys (though, I don't expect Peter Crouch to be around next season, unless it's on a very favourable/budget conscious pay if you play basis).
