That was a genuine question by the way. I remember it leaking out of 9v batteries in old toys when I was young.

Yeah it's dangerous, it's all about quantity though.
A little out of a 9v battery won't be as dangerous as that out of a car battery or acid in a bottle from a shop.

Until the recent changes to the law it was the preferred weapon of choice in the UK for people from the middle East or Africa because the punishment wasn't that severe if caught carrying/using it.

Disgraceful attempt at humour. She should be made to visit victims of this type of heanous and cowardly crime. I wonder if she will still find it funny. She must have run out of material as she has exhausted the repetoire of fat jokes.

Just for your information...

"As a teacher, I feel that this would be perfect in terms of phonics work as if this story is read out loud, it offers so much in terms of sounding out vowels, consonants but also digraphs. It is very precisely written in this respect, and I can only assume that the author had this in mind when writing it. Naturally therefore it is highly educational and it is easy to see this book being used in classrooms.

'Is your name Milo? A mole enquires', is an example of how phonemes are played with to maximum effect. Children have a chance to compare the two similar soundings of the letter 'o'. However the next rhymes are 'fear', 'there's' and 'hear', allowing the child to think about the sound of the rhymes, yet seeing that the first and third word look similar and sound similar, they can see that the middle word essentially rhymes in a different way, and looks altogether different ( the consonant 'r' matches). This is a very good tactic in getting children to focus on rhyme, and looking at the grapheme and phoneme correlation, and phonetic similarities. The rhyme throughout is outstanding!"

Whoops, wonder how such a childish brain came up with such a complicated rhyme scheme.

And what about my other books? The non-children's ones, the science fiction I write for Wattpad and the How-To books about children's publishing and Fiverr?
Which begs the question, how can someone with such obvious talent, spout so much vitriolic shite on here at times?

I work to a simple premise regarding humour and it is that if you make a comment and your audience, wherever they may be, burst out laughing - as in this case - then it is a fair assumption that you have not only told a joke but done a pretty good job of so doing.

I have listened, in full, to the audio tape of what Jo Brand said and I haven't got a problem with it.

Some things just shouldn’t be joked about including this and the murder of innocent people. Put yourself in the victim’ s shoes or their families. It’s just not something to laugh at.

Falcon wrote:It was a highly distasteful joke to be fair, and she's rightfully being criticised for it. Farage might be an utter bellend but nobody deserves to be pelted with acid for their politics.

However, that won't bother her at all. Like most comedians they thrive on people reacting to their 'edgy' jokes. Look at Jimmy Carr or Frankie Boyle for instance.
The problem with Carr and Boyle isn't that their jokes are edgy, it's that too often they go immediately for the shock of an edgy joke instead of disguising the jokes edgy nature to catch the audience off guard. It's still often funny, without being hilarious, but it's pretty lazy and predictable. It's like a scene in a horror movie that deliberately leads you to believe you're about to be made to jump, and then it tries to make you jump. Sure, sometimes you still jump but you weren't caught off guard, or shocked.

Edgy jokes can be brilliant though, and one of my favourite examples is a Norm McDonald joke. With this joke he could have just left it at "the math was done by a woman" and it would have been a lame, lazy, edgy joke about being sexist. But what he does with that lame joke is, to me, brilliant. https://9gag.com/gag/aY4KzvN/norm-mcdonald-women-vs-men" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Another example of an edgy joke I love is a Bob Monkhouse joke (famous edgelord that he was). I couldn't find a clip of it so i'll just quote it. "When I die I want to go peacefully like my grandfather - in my sleep. Not screaming and terrified like his passengers."

These two jokes are both edgy jokes about sexism and manslaughter, but i think they're brilliant because they lead you in one direction so they disarm you somewhat before slapping you with the punchline while you're looking the other way. The problem with Carr, Brand, and Boyle is that too often they don't manipulate you into not expecting the punchline. They're still funny, i think, but also predictable.

"homophobic" kinda give you your answer, if you want it.

Why do you think someone's religion should matter to him when deciding whether their homophobia makes them his enemy? Is that matters for you? Are you less opposed to a Christian homophobe than a Muslim homophobe?

Of course we wouldn't.

If there were 5 people listening to an offensive joke, and then the Daily Wail screamed about it to millions, and then 500 people all start throwing battery acid around while not a single one of the original 5 listeners were involved, then who's to blame?

Politics is just horrible.

Look at the state of the comments. It's embarrassing.
Squabbling over who's more intelligent.
Instant left versus right, started by people who claim the other side 'started it first'

I don't believe Brand 'didn't mean it' and it was 'just' a joke, nor do I think she would be happy if somebody actually did it.
I don't find it funny, but that's besides the point, it's aimed at lefties who hate the right, as it would be if Clarkson said it about Corbyn... I'd say Boyle would get away with it, he's more likely to say do it to all of them. Either way Brand is, crap or not, a comedian - and comedy tends to go hand in hand with politics, religion, race, sex and everything else that people get upset about, so in fairness, this is her job.

The joke was made in a show called "Heresy" - I'm not being fly here but wouldn't you expect, given its title, its content to be on the unpalatable side ?
If not, you may as well call it "The Jo Bland Show" or "Indifference".

But still repeating ad nauseam on their news programmes (radio 4)....

Was a very silly thing to say. It could have severe consequences if some nutter acts on it.... it is one of the things most of fear, but don’t mention as a natural progression from milk shakes.

Battery acid attacks traditionally happen in clusters, it will only take one and their will be dozens of copy cats.

Incredibly ill judged, though it may be that she felt she needed the headline in our crazy world.

Of course. The people complaining about it aren't people who listened to it. They didn't experience the joke. They were only told about it.

Just like when i don't experience racism, but get told about racism. Except apparently when i complain about racism existing i'm "being offended on others' behalf".

Funny how that works, isn't it?

Yes.

Unless you can provide an alternate explanation for why you think it is an "unfair question" to ask someone what they think of "homophobic Muslims", after they have said that homophobes and islamophobes are his enemies.

I'm assuming you think it's unfair to ask that because you don't think there is a cognitive dissonance between opposing homophobes and having a problem with people who have a problem with Muslims. But hey, if you can credibility defend your post then i'll remove mine.

The problem for those supporting the joke is that there is no joke. She, almost verbatim, says, "Farage is unpleasant. People are throwing milkshakes at him. It would be better to throw dangerous substances."

I'm sure it's possible to craft a joke about him that's a well-crafted bon mot, even if its punchline suggests violence towards him. The debate about whether that was acceptable would be more enlightening. But, Brand's joke only works if you think it would be funny to throw acid at Farage. There's nothing else to it. Clearly, many people do find that prospect funny.

Might have been how I worded it but I did see it as quite simply questioning T-Rex's logic.

Almost verbatim, you say...

Replying to a question about the state of UK politics, she said:
Jo Brand wrote:Well, yes I would say that but that’s because certain unpleasant characters are being thrown to the fore and they’re very, very easy to hate and I’m kind of thinking: ‘Why bother with a milkshake when you could get some battery acid?

That’s just me. I’m not going to do it, it’s purely a fantasy, but I think milkshakes are pathetic, I honestly do, sorry.
Almost
Verbatim

Quibbling about nothing (I clearly said it wasn't verbatim) rather than disagreeing with the substance. If I'd missed some substantial part of the "joke", I know you'd have pointed it out. Why is there no "beneath contempt" emoji?

Settle for...
