Sponsorships of the Longside
Sponsorships of the Longside
This question has been doing my head in for about a week now, how many sponsorships has the longside had over the years and has the new stand always been called 'The James Hargreaves Stand (I think it was called North Stand before the sponsorship got sorted)
As for the Longside before I can only remember 'The Sanderson Ford Longside', any other names given to it before that?

I think Skippers used to be on the roof just before Sanderson Ford were.

How long has James Hargreaves got left sponsoring that stand? It's been quite a while.
Just wondering whether they'll let another firm sponsor it, or whether they'll go down the route of naming it after a player instead of or aswell another new sponsor when the JH sponsor deal expires.

I had some away supporters asking me last year what kind of player “James Hargreaves” was for us.
I wasn’t sure wether to tell them that he was a local lad that broke into the team aged 16 and was a stalwart in the defence for the next 26 years or the truth

Re: Sponsorships of the Longside
There was a strong push from supporters for the stand to be named The Harry Potts Longside given that Harry passed away whilst it was being built. Those pleas were ignored and, I'm told, James Hargreaves, linked with then director Bernard Rothwell, wouldn't even permit the name Longside in its name.MACCA wrote:How long has James Hargreaves got left sponsoring that stand? Re: Sponsorships of the Longside
James Hargreaves was my granddad. I have to admit not the same James Hargreaves but when they named the stand my mum was thrilled to bits. I was very disappointed, given the naming, that the other new stand wasn't named the Bill Scholes Stand who was my other granddad. Both were committed Burnley fans too.wilks_bfc wrote:I had some away supporters asking me last year what kind of player “James Hargreaves” was for us.

At least you managed to retain, the Bee Hole End, for us!

Well hopefully once their time is up, we get something more suited and/or meaningful.

Re: Sponsorships of the Longside
For years I referred to it as the Harry Potts Longside if for no other reason it wound up Andrew Watson - but if anyone asks me where I sit in the ground I always say Longside.MACCA wrote:Well hopefully once their time is up, we get something more suited and/or meaningful.
Re: Sponsorships of the Longside
I dont think I've ever called it the James Hargreaves stand to be honest. It's been the Longside forever, although for some reason even though I used to go in the Bee Hole, it's always "The Jimmy Mac" when talking about that end.ClaretTony wrote:For years I referred to it as the Harry Potts Longside if for no other reason it wound up Andrew Watson - but if anyone asks me where I sit in the ground I always say Longside.
Strange.

The 4 sides are The Bob Lord, The CFS, The Longside and The Jimmy Mac. Surely that should tell the Club something.

Church Paint - Varnish Co. LTD. on the roof in 1980.
I remember being disappointed they didn't refer to it as The Longside on the tickets for the final game:

Re: Sponsorships of the Longside
The sign on the Longside roof originally read "Church Paints and Varnish" but I'm not sure when it was first erected. It changed around 82/83 to read "CPV Paints - Turf Moor"4:20 wrote:This question has been doing my head in for about a week now, how many sponsorships has the longside had over the years and has the new stand always been called 'The James Hargreaves Stand (I think it was called North Stand before the sponsorship got sorted)

In both instances, it was still called the Longside rather than, for example, the CPV Longside. I think it was just an advert on the roof rather than sponsorship of the stand.
If I recall correctly, it changed to Skippers around 89/90 when Turf Moor was repainted in claret and blue to replace the previous corporation green colour, with the sign latterly being changed to Sanderson Ford when it took over Skippers.

Re: Sponsorships of the Longside
The new build in between the James Hargreaves and Jimmy McIIroy stands has "Longside" in huge letter on it at ground level which will be visible once building work barriers removed.

Re: Sponsorships of the Longside
I'm sure it'll get new names in the future.
It'll always be the Longside to me though.
When that was packed, rocking and we scored, it was the place to be.

Re: Sponsorships of the Longside
seems daft that the club dont acknowledge the fact that the Longside name is important to a lot of fans, it should be called that, and only that.

Considering we've been getting higher profile shirt sponsorship you'd have thought we would be trying to do the same with the stands as well.ClaretTony wrote:Goodness knows, it gets renewed and renewed and renewed.

Bloody hell that takes me back. Green sign (as per barrier and stand colours)with cream lettering. Church Paint and Varnish was a massive name at the time.Working_Class_Zero wrote:Church Paint - Varnish Co. LTD. on the roof in 1980.

Re: Sponsorships of the Longside
Andrew Watson......now there was a chap above his station.
I used to take 3 ‘handicapped” chaps on through Rond Table when we were in the 4th and no one wanted to know The Clarets........the club gave them free tickets.....I paid for mine but AW wouldn’t renew them saying “we get requests from all sorts of tin pot organisations..........”
Barry Kilby sorted it out.........

Been a good supporter of Burnley for as long as I can remember. It remains the only plumbers merchant I could name.ClaretTony wrote:Goodness knows, it gets renewed and renewed and renewed.
Brings to mind... Brian Miller on the phone, Skipper, angels nightclub... and of course follow Keith McNee adverts in the programme every time I see the name.

Re: Sponsorships of the Longside
I don’t recall hearing many people call it the James Hargreaves stand, although that might be my mind automatically changing it to The Longside.
I do call what was once the Bee Hole End the Jimmy Mac now, but that’s different because of the respect the fans had for Jimmy.

I bet it’s not as much as you’d think really
It would very rarely be shown on screen during televised games so any advertising on it would have minimal impact

Lets be careful what we ask for ... once the JH sponsorship runs out, it will only be another bloody betting company!
