Historical wildcard ...

Post by bfccrazy » Fri Jun 21, 2019 7:32 pm

which player have you seen play for Burnley who didn’t seem to fit into our side or was a marmite player - but you’d love to see in the side now.

For me it’d be Jean Louis Valois.

Patrick Bamford, just so he could relive the misery all over again.

Paul Smith. Came in under Heath, but stagnated under Waddle. I don’t think that Ternent’s Managerial style brought the best out of him.
He was so talented. Such a great left foot. I’d have loved for Dyche to work on him. He could’ve made him a top player.

Another for me would be Djemba Djemba - always seemed to be a slight step ahead of those around him but would do a great job now I think.

He did have a lovely left foot, but I think even at Waddle's age he would've done Smith for pace. The lad moved like he was soaked through.

Tony Philiskirk. Wasn't much good but the way we lump it up front nowadays he could definitely do a job for us Peter Crouch style

I certainly remember him sprinting through the Watford defence on a Tuesday night at Vicarage Road to score his first goal for us(a 2 apiece draw). Gifton Noel-Williams scored for them, that night. He was slow, by the time he came to us.

Paul Smith had chronic knee problems which seriously affected him. Superb left foot, pace, great crosser of a ball but sadly just not fit enough.

Used to play on Ivy Bank tennis courts as well and he looked even better on there. When we had that class spell under Ward (Heath) he looked the business along with a few other young players

Didn’t he once injure himself falling down a grate in his back yard?

Alan Moore, was a brilliant signing - decent player but injured and never got going in his time here.

Really classy player. A World Beater, on his day; looked like he’d been drinking Wife-Beater when off it.

He did and was quite a serious one from recollection. Played League One football after leaving us at Hartlepool & Sheffield Wednesday and then played non league football for a number of years.

We most surely be able to find better! Smith was bang average at our average level at the time, as for Valois! They could though, both say that they were at playing a game that they were able to play - Phil Malley on the other hand!!

I remember that injury. sounds funny but as CT says it was quite serious. I also seem to remember he had a long throw on him.

Found this on Paul Smith.

Clarets star Paul Smith yesterday took his first steps along another comeback road as he made a successful return to training following the freak shin injury he sustained last month.

The luckless winger had to curtail his loan spell at Oldham after falling down an unlit manhole and receiving a gash which required a dozen stitches.

However, he was back with the Clarets first-team squad yesterday and could be in contention for a run-out in the reserves at Port Vale tomorrow night.

"We'll see, although it might be a bit early. We don't want to rush it because it's been a nasty injury. I'm pleased to see him back. He's worked hard to get fit," said Ternent.

Dimi Papadopoulos. Potential when he signed, scored the odd decent goal (Huddersfield, stoke and Ipswich from memory) but rarely given a chance despite being young and exciting.

Went on to have a pretty good career especially in Greece - euro 2004 winner and plenty of goals for Panathainaikos. Three times greek player of the year and titles in a couple of countries. His career went better than Burnleys did in the main (when he signed to his peak) but would have been good to see how he wouldve done under a manager who fancied him here.

In fact believe it or not he is still only the same age as Peter Crouch. Sign him on!

We signed Papadopoulous in the same summer as we tried to sign Crouch.

Someone who could hold the ball up really well and play with his back to goal.

Some of the balls he would ping about effortlessly would be a dream come true for how we play now. A flair player who loved to pop up in games on the telly but with some Dyche drive and the players we have around him I think he would have been class.

I disagree, he had a bit of flare with a fancy name and that’s why Burnley fans loved him. He couldn’t defend, he couldn’t pass, his final ball was mostly poor. He played for himself and that’s it. He was anonymous in most games.

I think it is more likely SD would have immediately shown him the door... I’ll disciplined, rebellious and a little too fond of the hop, I certainly remember being among the issues Burnley had with him.

Marco Gentile. Once described by Ruud Gullit (I think) as the best Dutch defender to never win a cap (or something along those lines).

He was about 15 years ahead of the curve with diving too. Would fit into Dyche"s none of our players dive.. honest mantra !

Still, he clearly is one that got away ;)
