Re: Cordless Grass Mower
.... or get a petrol mower, they do quite small versions in Homebase (I’m sure other DIY stores are available)
Re: Cordless Grass Mower
I was in the same situation and got a petrol mower but it has a steel body and weighs quite a bit, l would look for a plastic body if I ever need another.
Re: Cordless Grass Mower
I purchased a Bosch 36li battery mower last year after much deliberation. I was concerned about the battery lasting long enough to cut both front and back lawns but it is that much quicker than a corded mower I can get 2 cuts before having to recharge.

It's not over big, long and thin, it's at a slight angle with a few bumps. It's roughly 16m x 4m. I have several steps and levels to walk up to it so don't want anything too heavy. Always had these Flymo electric easy glide or similar but they eventually get to the point where they don't hover and do my back in.theroyaldyche wrote:How bigs ya garden

Re: Cordless Grass Mower
I got a Gtech one last year when they were on offer, it's fantastic. It has cut the mowing time down from an hour to 15 minutes. The battery lasts for two full cuts and I received a quick charger that only takes an hour.
I also have their hedge trimmer and the grass strimmer, to go with the large and small vacuums indoors, I love them all.

Re: Cordless Grass Mower
I'm a professional gardener (well I get paid!) and I looked into this a short while ago.
The general impression I got is that they're good for twenty minutes. If that's true then it's no better then a Webb battery mower my mum used in the 1960s. This was a cylinder mower with a car battery. It worked for twenty minutes or so, struggled with long grass, slowed down near then end of it's duty, needed a new battery every two or three years and took around 24 hours to recharge.
If you are doing this for environmental reasons you may be better off getting a manual (push) mower. The only problem is I don't see any rotary ones. Of course they are best if you have a small lawn and don't let the grass get long. With cylinder mowers you also get the problem of 'bents', which are usually rye grass seed heads - stalks that grow long and aren't cut by the cylinder. That's why rotary mowers are more popular. Getting one with a roller (as opposed to four wheels) gives you better stripes.
If your lawn is a bit bigger then average you could get two batteries.

Re: Cordless Grass Mower
I, too, got fed up with cables. Did not like fuel, so have a very expensive cordless mower, 16" cut and 45 mins charge. Does my lawns in 20-25 mins, whereas, the lesser cut electric model, extension leads, plugging in, redoing for the change from front to back etc, took about an hour.
Takes the effort out.
Battery charges swiftly.
Mowed my lawns, this PM and checked mower. It is a couple of years old now. EGO. 55v lithium battery. Now they are 56v.

I have a petrol lawn mower but it is quite heavy. I looked into it and from all the reviews this one came out tops for quality and value.

I have the 24v Greenworks hedge trimmer and strimmer and they are brilliant so can recommend the make.

Re: Cordless Grass Mower
I considered cordless but was put off by the price.and doubts about battery longevity. 2 batteries would have helped though, I'm sure, but this would have increased the price further
Between the front and back lawns I've probably got 30 X 5 metres
I can do the same job with my petrol mower with 2 caveats:
1) It's a royal pain in the ass to start after being in the shed all winter.
2) It's quite heavy
Being heavy doesn't affect me but I can imagine lots of garden situations where it would be a problem
Don't regret buying petrol but need to learn some new cuss words for that first start of the spring!

Re: Cordless Grass Mower
I got a Spear and Jackson 37cm cordless mower earlier this year and it's very good.
It does my back lawn, decent size and front lawn smallish, on a single charge comfortably.
£180 at Argos.

Do you drain the tank before storing as the petrol goes stale over time? I run mine till the tank is empty then fill with fresh petrol in the spring and it always starts first or second pull.Croydon Claret wrote: It's a royal pain in the ass to start after being in the shed all winter.

Using high octane (98 ish) gets round the going stale problem.cbx750 wrote:Do you drain the tank before storing as the petrol goes stale over time? I run mine till the tank is empty then fill with fresh petrol in the spring and it always starts first or second pull.
I use a self-propelled mower, so no effort to push around. I'm looking for a way to slow it down as it's now too fast for me!

I've only had it for one year so still learning.cbx750 wrote:Do you drain the tank before storing as the petrol goes stale over time? I run mine till the tank is empty then fill with fresh petrol in the spring and it always starts first or second pull.
No I didn't drain it, made the mistake of sticking it in the shed over winter with a full tank.
I'm definitely going to run it dry this year and do what you say re filling it with fresh petrol.
Was thinking of starting it once a month over winter but not sure if that is necessary
Re: Cordless Grass Mower
You also need to check the oil level every time you use it, and change that oil after so many hours - the manual will say how many.
And check the air filter periodically. It's probably a paper filter so just knock it gently on the handle bars to get the dust out.
Clean the underneath at the end of the season, and when the dry spell begins - wet grass builds up on the inside adding weight and reducing the flow of cut grass.
Get the blades sharpened every 100 hours or so (the linked article says 25 _ I suppose it depends on the quality of the steel and how rough you are with it). Blunt blades damage the grass and increase fuel usage. A good service at this time will change the spark plug, air filter and oil.
https://bestofmowers.com/how-often-to-s ... wer-blades" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
What I do is adjust the cutting height through the season. Start off longish, then reduce to your normal (not too short) height, but cut longer when really dry. People often cut too short and that weakens the grass allowing opportunities for weeds and moss.

Re: Cordless Grass Mower
Let it grow! Turn it into a wildflower lawn and cut august sept. Cut a path through it. It'll be great for insects. You could put in some wildflower plugs or yellow rattle which is semi parasitic on gras if you don't like long grass. Ours is heaving with bees. Saves on labour looks fab. It'll dry off later in the summer so cut it then and compost. Roberts your Dad's brother

I think I'm going to try one of the greenworks models as suggested by firthy. I've never paid a lot for a mower but I'm going to have to bite the bullet, the body won't take anymore of the hard work. Thanks everyone for the input, especially the suggestion of artificial grass
