Last Sunday they had McEwans Champion for 1.49. Excellent tackle and at 7.2% you don't drink many of those.

Re: Lidl's beers
They also do a great Cotes du Rhone and a merlot as well.
Around a fiver, every bit as good as stuff twice the price from elsewhere.
And believe me, I've tried most of em.

If it's marketed as 'German' though you'd probably expect it to be from Germany.
Although I'm fully aware that most of the big foreign beers are actually bottled over here.

Re: Lidl's beers
Cotes du Rhone Villages is very nice stuff. They also do a French Pinot Noir for a fiver which is very drinkable. I have had quite a few bottles of Pinot Noir costing a fair bit more than this and they have been a bit ropy to say the least.ElectroClaret wrote:They also do a great Cotes du Rhone and a merlot as well.

Hi.
I was ****** when I started this thread.
I was drinking an American IPA and a "pilsner" which was around 90p a bottle. I don't think it was as good as I thought it was, it just got me ****** easily.

Not quite right but on the right lines.elwaclaret wrote:Most of the Czech Republic was part of Central Europe that was pre German Unification, called Germany...
Pilsen is in Bohemia, which along with all the orginal German States was a part of the Austro - Hungarian Empire. Unlike its near neighbour Bavaria, it didn't become part of the unified Germany in 1871, but remained part of the Hapsburg (A - H) Empire until it came to an end in 1918.
The reason that it is described as German Beer is that the original brewer was a German from Bavaria.
(It did become part of the Third Reich, so was briefly "German", but in 1945 it became a part of the new communist Czechoslovakia. (Now Czech Rep.))

Re: Lidl's beers
Beg to differ might not be directly related to Pilsner but it was part of Greater Germany (or Germania if you prefer) within the Holy Roman Empire / Hapsburg empire.nil_desperandum wrote:Not quite right but on the right lines.

Re: Lidl's beers
Maybe if you go back far enough, but it's always been in Bohemia and "Slavic", and at the time the beer was invented / patented it was in the Austro- Hungarian Empire, and since then it's reverted to its Czech roots.elwaclaret wrote:Beg to differ might not be directly related to Pilsner but it was part of Greater Germany (or Germania if you prefer) within the Holy Roman Empire / Hapsburg empire.
If you're going to go back to Germania (i.e the Roman province) then you can move lots of boundaries.

Re: Lidl's beers
Back in the days of those 'party-6' or was it seven(?) cans I was pleased to discover from someone who worked at the brewery that the Sainsbury's Best Bitter one was brewed for them by Ruddles; it was Ruddles County but at less than half the price of the Ruddles cans being sold on the same shelf.
The Lidl beer is by far our cheapest option here in French Polynesia - it's being sold by the Carrefour/Champion supermarkets, though it quickly goes out of stock; at just over £1 for a 250cc can it's almost half the price of anything else on sale, the local Hinano brew's £1.90/can or Heineken at £2.60/can - this is not a place for the beer drinker.

Very true . In order to redress the balance - bass in a barrel glass at the rifle volunteers is a thing of beauty. Boxer blonde at the swan Whalley used to be my favourite but they never have it on nowRammyClaret61 wrote:You better hurry, with everyone opting to drink cheap supermarket beers.
