Well a couple of hundred thousand people seemed to be enjoying Stormzy last night and I’m sure a few million others did on TV. So whereas you’re perfectly entitled to think that he, and grime music in general is **** - that doesn’t make it categorically so. OK Stormzy may have some valid criticisms of the regime, however his new figure of some sort of voice of all things righteous seems a bit bizarre seeing how a lot of his lyrics contain lines that promote violence & other degenerative things - see this link https://genius.com/Stormzy-mr-skeng-lyrics" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; for an example

Re: Glastonbury 2019
Grime music isn’t my cup of tea and I’m not a big fan of Stormzy - but I enjoyed his performance last night. I was able to appreciate some elements of his beats and vocals and it goes without saying that his stage presence was very good. Like I mentioned above, I caught a bit of George Ezra beforehand who had looked like he couldn’t own a cat.CoolClaret wrote:Basically even if you don't particularly like some types of music, you can appreciate either the technical mastery or complexity behind it... Re: Glastonbury 2019
Why do we need to give up? The good thing about music is there is a lot of it, so there’s something for everyone to like. If you don’t like Stormzy that’s fine. I listened to his album a few months ago, because I’m open minded to all genres of music, and it wasn’t really my cup of tea. So I didn’t listen to it again.CoolClaret wrote:Really does show you the state of the nation then eh?

Nobody is saying that he is the next Bowie but his music is enjoyed by a lot of people.
I got into music in the early/mid 90’s - you could dissect Oasis lyrics and criticise their musical limitations but the fact is they made music that millions of people enjoyed. On the flip side m, jazz music is extremely complex and played by highly skilled musicians, but it is a very acquired taste enjoyed by a much smaller minority.

They’re re-running Janet Jackson’s set. When the microphone completely covers her mouth it almost looks like she’s singing. What’s with the awful sound quality too?

Ok, speaking from a purely musical point of view. I'm a professional session musician but I have to admit that I'd never heard of Stormzy before last night, let's just say I move in very different circles.CoolClaret wrote:Well speaking from a pure musical point of view, a distinct lack of harmony or melodic lines, just a bloke rapping over a beat made in about 5 minutes on a Roland drum machine, often making up words to 'rhyme'.

There was some very sophisticated stuff going on there, fantastic drummer, bass and guitarist. I thought the whole set was incredibly professional and hugely entertaining.

Music is very subjective and everyone gets an opinion.
I do it for a living but my opinion is no more valid than yours.
It's all in the sales.
I would have to be dragged kicking and screaming to Glastonbury now, but I suppose I wouldn't have minded seeing Fontaines DC or Tame Impalas.
I like Kylie, I played on one of her recordings.

It is definitely time for Liam and Noel to kiss and make up. Liam was actually fantastic tonight and looked to be enjoying himself massively, the atmosphere was great. The sheer euphoria of hearing “OASIS TICKETS GO ON SALE” would send this country alone absolutely crazy. To see the band back together, albeit with or without original members, McCarroll excluded for obvious reasons would be fantastic. The music they created through Noel’s song writing and Liam’s passion creates memories and reality for many many people, and to bring that back to Millions of people in a time when things continue to look down, well I think it would be incredible !

I think he looks like Lukaku - other people do too. Sometimes I say that a white person looks like another white person, and you may agree or disagree, but because it happens to be two black people you imply I’m being racist?!Rileybobs wrote:You said he looked like Lukaku and sounded like Dizzee Rascal. As for the act, you can give it a new name like “grime” or whatever, but to my “subjective” ear, he isn’t doing anything that Dizzee Rascall or any number of rap/hip hop acts weren’t doing 20 years or so ago.
