Northamptonshire v Lancs
A tough morning for the Red Rose having chosen to bowl,Northants are 104-1 at lunch, even worse is Bohannon has gone off with a knee injury.
And further woe is that Jimmy will miss this game and the Sussex game, that doesn't leave him much time to recover for the 1st test.

Re: Northamptonshire v Lancs
Dunno just noticed he's not in the line-up,bloody hell they're dropping like flies at Lancs these days,a lot on Onion and Mahmood's shoulders,i hate to say it,but we'll do well to emerge with a draw from this one, they look like building a huge 1st innings total.Bordeauxclaret wrote:What’s happened to Tom Bailey?
A good test for our beleaguered batting line-up to answer their critics, about time Jennings and Hameed came to the fore,i don't know why we elected to bowl first up,but it looks a bad decision.
Just got a 2nd wicket so 134-2 now, still question the choice to insert, unless it's spinning cartwheels or a real seamer,i'd always bat first, this could be down to Vilas lacking trust in the batting.
Edit 138-3 now, hope the conditions aren't changing to favour the bowlers,2 new batsman at the crease,Lancs need to take advantage.

Play for a good draw and get as many bonus points as we can - then get out of there.

What on earth are we doing putting s team in on a wicket where they get 300 plus for 5?

Ask the skip CT,especially when our bowling options are limited without Jimmy.ClaretTony wrote:What on earth are we doing putting s team in on a wicket where they get 300 plus for 5?
They've batted us out of the game on day one.
The best we can hope for is a draw now.
334-5 at the close.

Teams virtually always batted first when they got the option. You only put teams in if there is a massive advantage to bowl first.

We'll see what the Lancs batters are made off staring down a total of 400+.

Spot on for me is that. Had we gone for the toss and lost we could have still had to bowl first but to hand it to them is crazy.tiger76 wrote:The golden rule is bat first,or think again and still bat first.
Re: Northamptonshire v Lancs
Time for Jennings and Hameed to dig in and get some runs.
Re: Northamptonshire v Lancs
Good luck with that then. I bet Vilas doesn't bother to take the pads off these days once he's finished keeping wicket.jrgbfc wrote:Time for Jennings and Hameed to dig in and get some runs.

Re: Northamptonshire v Lancs
Partial recovery from the now familiar Jennings/Hameed disaster - we've reached 59/2.
Surely there is no way Jennings will be considered for the test squad now.

Re: Northamptonshire v Lancs
Both Jennings and Hameed got ducks in the last CC innings Lancs played too (2nd innings v Durham), we were 0-2 then; at least we got to 2-2 today (thanks to Davies).
I'm remembering an old joke that a Glos supporting mate had back in the mid 70s re their batsman Jim Foat who was going through a bad patch- he claimed may as well change his name to Photo.

They've got to be dropped,we can't keep picking players on reputation alone,if nothing else it'll send a message to the rest of the squad that no-one is immune from the push.Foulthrow wrote:Are Lancashire being told by the ECB that they have to play them? Both need to go back to 2nd 11 cricket and rebuild their games, you'd think with their talent scores would come at that level, and their confidence will return.
We might as well just have 9 batters for all the use they are just now.

It's incredible how sparse England are for genuine quality openers,Starc and co will be licking their lips come August.

I didn't know this but Roy has never played a test match. They can't keep Jennings in though, it has to be Roy.tiger76 wrote:I thought Jason Roy was going to open in the tests, heaven knows who with,Burns i suppose,i can see an SOS going out to a young chap by the name of Cook.

Lancs 308/9 so gain a third batting point but may do well to hold on to their unbeaten run.

56-3 now, still approaching a lead of nearly 200,can't see Lancs chasing whatever they set batting last.

Lead nearly at 300. However breaking news. Hameed has done something useful albeit not with the bat. He ran one of the opposition out

I'm surprised Northants have batted as long as they have, guess they'll either declare first thing,or have a quick dart for half/hour in the morning.dpinsussex wrote:Sadly I think you are correct

Doesn't really matter Lancs will never bat out the day, judging by the forecast the weather won't be coming to our aid,not that we deserve it too after this shambolic display.
Unless Jennings and Hameed produce match-saving runs tomorrow(fat chance) they have to be benched to use football speak,it might be worth promoting Vilas to open,he's our most in form player, and we might avoid being 2 down for nothing, just a thought.

Watched both of these batters in the nets and the practise areas recently before their Lancs games and they both seemed on top of their games and enjoying it with the rest of the team.tiger76 wrote:I'm surprised Northants have batted as long as they have, guess they'll either declare first thing,or have a quick dart for half/hour in the morning.

It is strange that both such talented batsmen have lost form at the same time.
Would dropping them suit the Club or would perseverance be the better option?
I would stick with the latter. They are a team that are going to be promoted and seem to all want to be together.
Re: Northamptonshire v Lancs
Even if Lancashire do get promoted it will be straight back down unless they sort the batting out.

Re: Northamptonshire v Lancs
But how long do you persevere,it's not like they're getting 30/40's.looking decent for a hour or so and then getting out,at least in that scenario you could see a light at the end of the tunnel.tybfc wrote:Watched both of these batters in the nets and the practise areas recently before their Lancs games and they both seemed on top of their games and enjoying it with the rest of the team.

Their last 4 CC innings combined this duo have faced 21 balls and failed to trouble the scorers, now if this was a blip i could accept that, all batsman have their spells of failure, but this has been going on since last year.
Just checking out their recent form.in his last 13 innings for Lancs Hameed hasn't passed 30,Jennings is slightly better he at least has some scores this season, but after a promising run until the end of May,his last 7 CC innings include 4 ducks, this must erode their confidence, which is why i suggested some 2nd 11 action,at least then they might be able to play themselves back into form, and crucially get some time at the crease.
Is Lancs squad so threadbare that there isn't anyone who can step up and take their place,i hope they can at least show some fight today, and make the bowlers work for their wickets, but i'm not holding my breath.
It's such a shame Hammeed picked up that injury when he did,as he was poised to be Cookie's natural successor,Jennings has lost his confidence and test bowlers have noted his weakness outside off-stump,and against pace,at that level there's no hiding place i'm afraid.
