Re: Burnley beat Fulham in Portugal
I’m assuming all the players were given a run out with no one playing more than 45 mins but other than the score and the scorer there is no further info available.

65 minutes for Benson with everybody else getting no longer than 45. Interesting.

Re: Burnley beat Fulham in Portugal
Very strange, the club reported that Ben Mee was fouled for the pen that led to the goal but he wasn't on the pitch when it happened according to the team info.
No Heaton, Taylor, Defour, from what I can see.
Short piece with both teams at

He wasn't in last week at Gawthorpe but he's been there this week in Portugal, the only other player given an extra week was Nahki Wells because he was playing in the CONCACAF Gold Cup towards end of June.ClaretAndJew wrote:Hasn't Vydra been playing international so gets a longer break?

With all the talk of Tom not signing a new contract and most fans wanting him as number one wouldn’t you think playing him would have been a statement of intent?ClaretTony wrote:We've three goalkeepers and he could only play two of them. No Taylor or Defour either.

Not really no, it was a behind closed doors friendly to end a week in Portugal. I don't read anything into the line ups whatsoever.Dodobdobodobo wrote:With all the talk of Tom not signing a new contract and most fans wanting him as number one wouldn’t you think playing him would have been a statement of intent?

Re: Burnley beat Fulham in Portugal
Is Benson going to be this season's exciting preseason youth?
Plays well in the warm up matches, looks the part, then barely ever seen again?
Would be nice to see a few of our youth players start to break through together.

Benson was never a youth team player at Burnley, we signed him from Arsenal last summer. I think he's got something about him.Goobs wrote:Is Benson going to be this season's exciting preseason youth?

Very true Tony, I think that a lot of people are really short of something important to worry about. 'Benson' - a derogatory term offered to someone of limited intellect in the Burnley and Pendle area.

Hope you are right as I like nothing more than seeing young players breakthrough and do well. Seem to recall he has impressed a lot in the U23's from match reports read last year.

Re: Burnley beat Fulham in Portugal
He and Mace Goodridge came in on trial towards the end of the 2017/18 season and both did well enough to get deals. Both started last season really well but Goodridge then did his cruciate and is just on his way back. Benson, I thought impressed, but he missed the end of the season with a hamstring injury at a time when all four u23 central midfielders were injured.Goobs wrote:Haha got me on a technicality there CT. Both Benson & Goodridge are still just 19 though so we need to be patient, you don't get a McNeil every year, players like him coming through are exceptional.
That squad is improving, no doubt about it, but we are still in recovery mode in the academy although things are moving forward really well now and hopefully we'll be preparing for cat 1 this time next year.

Ashingtonclaret46 I understand what Tony says but I can I assure you I have plenty things to worry about outside of Tom Heaton not playing this evening. I am pretty sure though (and I might be wrong) but I think this does mean the end for Tom Heaton and Burnley. There must be plenty of posters that are thinking along the same lines.Ashingtonclaret46 wrote:Very true Tony, I think that a lot of people are really short of something important to worry about. Seem to recall he played alongside Marley Blair a few times if memory serves me right and there were some complimentary reports about them both earlier on in the season?ClaretTony wrote:He and Mace Goodridge came in on trial towards the end of the 2017/18 season and both did well enough to get deals. You are right, McNeil is looking like an exception to the norm and is certainly one of the most exciting youngsters (probably the most) I can remember coming through from the youth players.

Just think he commands the box better. I am a big fan of Tom and I am sure if he does need a new challenge/contract he will continue to be a great keeper for many years.
2 + 2 = 5 perhaps. We will soon find out I’m sure

If I was picking the team from our keepers then it would be Tom every single time, but that's my opinion. We will find out whether he leaves or stays, but certainly I would read absolutely nothing into his absence tonight.Dodobdobodobo wrote:I hope not but I have my doubts! From SD:
“The hardest thing is recreating that game atmosphere, even though it is pre-season. But they managed to get 45 minutes each and there were no injuries, which is great. There are a few niggles, like Charlie Taylor, who didn’t quite make it, but nothing too serious at this stage.”
So Taylor confirmed with a "niggle", we know Defour isn't 100%, could also be why Tom didn't play.
