Well I suppose we are all entitled to an opinion but I think I could produce a list into three figures of players I’ve seen play for us who are/were not as good as JBG.bartons baggage wrote:For me it has to be JBG.

so when you wrote "Ever" you want it condensing to our current crop of players ? and you single out a Burnley footballer who plies his trade in the highest league in the land ! Incredible.
Many of us have endured utter rubbish served up in the bottom division, and witnessed the most un athletic, talentless, apathetic slobs imaginable in Burnley shirts, and you choose JBG !!!!!

David Jones easily. Exceptionally limited ability, 1 footed 2 yard passing sideways or backwards excuse of a player if ever there was one.

You can tell how old posters are by the names mentioned in their posts.
For me, and I endured the 4th division days, it could be Tony Hancock.
We also made a huge deal about signing Liam Robinson in 1994 for our then record fee of £250K.

Nope I mean the big eared waste of space who run around in the middle of the park for us doing the square route of FA. created next to nothing, couldn’t take a player on, didn’t attempt any challenges or put himself about. All he could do was put himself between the ball and another player and make short passes to nearby teammates usually behind him. Last season JBG played 1,743 minutes in which time he scored 3 and assisted 6, so a goal involvement of one every 194 minutes or just under one every two games.
By comparison, McNeil played 1,590 minutes with 3 goals and 5 assists, so a goal involvement of one every 199 minutes.

Not exactly a good argument. Sean Dyche also purchased Juke and Sordell A’s first team players. Pair of them were lethal. Still I bet they hit the numbers for running around in training and were good in the dressing room. Shame they were also very poor aswell on par with Jones just not rated as highly by some though.fidelcastro wrote:Yet Sean Dyche felt it necessary to keep him in the team during those two promotions

Marlon Beresford. He was linked with a big club, a national cap (maybe U21 or england B or something) then signed for middlesbro of all teams for half a million quid. He was an okay keeper in his early days, when we were shite. I dunno how true it is, but as a kid I was told he was almost sold for a million pounds to a top division side [derby maybe?] (we were division three, or whatever it was called at the time - was it Waddle season?) and my little brain could not compute such a figure for a burnley player.

Paul Weller I never understood the fuss others made.
JBG is a class player and an excellent crosser and provider of goal assists
I also dont understand the obsession with wingers tracking back. Our problems last year came from everyone being back defending with the consequences that when we did play the ball upfield it came straight back. The best form of defence is attack as the opposition cant score if you are in their half

In my view I don’t think you are too far wrong with JBG. Certainly nowhere near the worst we’ve had but overrated, possibly,
Reading this thread, he is clearly ‘rated’ by many but his quantifiable contribution is pretty bang average.
He doesn’t score or assist.
Doesn’t have pace.
Very rarely beats his man.
Not so sure he’s great defensively.
I can’t think what his main attribute is if I’m totally honest, it’s certainly not his numbers.

Re: Most over rated Burnley player. (EVER)
Jones played because Dyche is poor at recruitment and he runs around a lot hitting set targets for effort. In a footballing sense Jones never done much at all. No creativity, didn’t put himself about and get stuck in. Had a **** poor goal scoring record aswell for a midfielder. All the real stats are there. Every club he’s been at he’s lost his place and been shifted on cheaply.fidelcastro wrote:You still haven't answered why David Jones played in most of those games when we won two promotions. Go on then what is it? You still refuse to answer. There’s a few people on here who are good at rambling on with no substance.
Also there’s a few people on here who need to remove their heads from Dyche’s rear end.

Never quite got the Chris McCann love in thing personally...despite his allegedly awesome start to the first Prem campaign.
All opinions...,I thought he was a fairly clumsy league one level midfielder. Watching him play I always thought, if anything, he'd have been better at centre half.

Re: Most over rated Burnley player. (EVER)
You can't call JBG overrated. He was signed for minimal outlay from an already relegated Charlton. What, did you think he was Pele?
He's not a world beater by any stretch but he's far outperformed any expectations we've had of him AND he's spent the best part of 2 years recovering from injuries.
Thirdly, no he can't really tackle (because, you know, he's a winger) but he tracks back and puts players under pressure with a diligence I've never seen given his limited defensive qualities

Yep. Another shout for McCann I’m afraid. Had a very good season and a half when he looked decent, but it was the other 8.5 (ish) seasons where people kept going on about how good he was going to be that puzzled me. As fatboy says, a bit clumsy looking and zero pace.
As an aside, can’t believe anyone would suggest DJ and JBG in this category.
