Re: Maguire goes to united
Really don’t understand the obsession with Maguire. He seems like a bog standard 1980’s Centre Back to me. Think he’ll need plenty of protection against pace and quick feet.
I don’t expect OGS to last until Christmas. I may be wrong but this seems like a massive waste of money.
Will start the merry go round, hope we forgot o buy a ticket.

He'll be worth every penny so long as Man U can enter the next World Cup.

Maguire is bang average, nowhere near the same class as VVD.
The game's gone & United are absolute mugs.

Re: Maguire goes to united
Hmmmmn how to sum this up, rationally I hope...
Maguire is an excellent central defender. He leads well, dies the basics well and can carry a ball outcdefwnce effectively. United are paying £80,000,000 for him.
Ok....
Tarkowski is more dominant aerially and is stronger physically. He does the basics well and can ping a pass but is not quite as good in possession.
If Maguire is worth £80,000,000 in this market, we should NOT ENTERTAIN offers that are under £50,000,000.

Not sure I'd agree Tarks is as good in the air as Maguire tbh. I get the feeling Leicester are more likely to go for Dunk anyway.

Strange world is footy now. If we swapped tarks for maguire, it’s be ok. If we didn’t, it’s still be ok. £80m for one.... what’s the other worth. I’d bet an inch of my dick we won’t see half that fee for tarks. Not even close.

He’s ok Maguire but when you see Juve signing Matthijs de Ligt for 70 million you’ve got to wonder what Utd are doing and how the “Premier League premium” that goes with any domestic signings is just ridiculous.

Re: Maguire goes to united
Maguire had an excellent world cup - probably adds at least £20m on his fee. I'd be surprised if we can get more than £30m for Tarks. Even if Man U only think he is a few % better than Tarks, that few % at the very top end can mean a whole different level of transfer fee.

Re: Maguire goes to United
Maguire is better than Jones or Smalling (the latter has been decent some seasons but not lately), I think Maguire and Linlelof would be a decent pairing. With Wan-Bissaka in and Shaw getting back to decent form, that will be a much better back4 that Man U have had for a couple of seasons.
I doubt they'll trouble the top 4 with their current options up front though.

Surely the obscene amount of money being quoted on here is £45m for Dunk
Especially as one poster seems willing to accept £30m for Tarks
After paying the sell on fee to Brentford that will leave us with diddly squat.

Looks like United are going for Europa league qualification next season, are they actually paying more for Maguire than Liverpool paid for VVD,it's going to end in tears at that club once again this season OGS gone by Christmas.

I'm surprised the board sanctioned the move. I sense a touch of desperation with Man U. Fergie left them collapsing and they've never recovered.Steve1956 wrote:Looks like United are going for Europa league qualification next season, are they actually paying more for Maguire than Liverpool paid for VVD,it's going to end in tears at that club once again this season OGS gone by Christmas.

Fergie knew his time was up,and so it proved him right the club is in a mess, A guy who failed at Cardiff City is in charge FFs who sanctioned giving him a contract on the back of a honeymoon period he had for a couple of months, now 80 Million pound for an average center back ....Wow just WowFactualFrank wrote:I'm surprised the board sanctioned the move. Does anyone seriously think he is at that level. He doesn't even come close to VVD.

United have been stitched up big time.
Re: Maguire goes to United
Even in Fergies last year or 2 they were making some bad decisions as a club. Bringing Scholes out of retirement instead of properly sorting out the centre mid issue. Ed Woodward has got too much control over the football side of things. He's probably an excellent business/money making man, but he hasn't got a clue about football.

Purely down to market forces. VVD has been at Liverpool for 18 months and for the forthcoming season we enter a new and improved TV deal. No surprise at all at the fee Leicester required particularly when United came calling.Spijed wrote:For £80 million you'd expect a world class defender and one of the best around

No, but you wouldn’t get VVD for anything like that price now so the comparison in fees is pointless.Spijed wrote:For £80 million you'd expect a world class defender and one of the best around

Maguire has absolutely no positional sense to be a top class defender. Just look at the number of times Terry, Ferdinand were able to read the danger signs and cut out any problems.
Maguire doesn't come close to having the same awareness.

Ok, tongue firmly in cheek in my comment, but that said Maguire isn’t an £80M player, but if that’s what Man Utd are willing to pay then I suppose he is and they’re fools. Without Claret tinted specs, Tarkowski isn’t that much better or worse than Maguire, there really isn’t much between them IMO. The difference is that Tarkowski plays for unfashionable Burnley and Maguire plays for media darlings Leicester (or did).Rileybobs wrote:Does anybody outside of Burnley consider Tarkowski to be better than Maguire? He’s one of the best centre backs in the country. This is a fact. Is he as good as Terry or Ferdinand in their prime, no. But neither Terry or Ferdinand play any more. So on that basis he is a top class defender by current standards.Spijed wrote:And Maguire still isn't a top class defender, so don't know what point your making.

The point is obvious to be fair. Ferdinand and Terry would be worth more than Maguire if they were in their mid-twenties in today's market.Spijed wrote:And Maguire still isn't a top class defender, so don't know what point your making.

Those outside of Burnley clearly consider Maguire to be a better player than Tarkowski. I very much doubt that those in the England and Man Utd set up think that Tarkowski is better but inexplicably favour Maguire because he doesn’t play for unfashionable Burnley.
