So for 3 seasons running we have played this Dyche style of hoofball and some people still deny it. Its awful and boring and it's about time we changed our style of play. We are the new Stoke. I won't go again until this rubbish stops. No doubt it's going to be 4 seasons in a row.

We played better stuff under Cotterill and Laws and that's not even a joke !

Bournemouth have proven it can be done.

I like long balls. They require more skill and accuracy than short balls.

Maybe you haven't noticed but our number of long balls is reducing season on season and at this rate we won't be playing any in 10 years time. Maybe you can then come back to watch us!

PS - Shouldn't brighton be top of the 2017/18 season!

It's only an average of 10 a game, one more every 9 minutes... hardly horrific.

I get sick of people over analysing stats. The most important stat at the end of a game is the score.
And to the op, we've just had 3 seasons in the premier league, what more do you want!
I imagine you're very hard to please so don't bother coming and whinging about long balls or which ever player it is in vogue to slag off because they've had a dip in form because they're human and not a robot

You want us to become Stoke?? And change our style quickly? Coz that worked out really well for them
It's not amazing, but it works. I'm sure you believed the United fans when they said under Mourinho that they would rather lose than play that way... the same United fans who began kicking off at losing just a couple of months later. Bournemouth play under Eddy Howe, the same Eddy Howe who was our manager before a certain manager who has become a Burnley legend.

If I get to watch Burnley play this way in the top division for the next 10 years, with moments of magic, incredible results and the ability to get better players year on year (Jay Rod could be our sub ffs) then sign me up for every game.

Hoofball and long ball are quite different. Hoofball is hurried, whack it upfield and hope it goes to one of your players. Long ball include, goalkeeper drop-kicks, all passes over 25 metres such as we see regularly from Tarkovsky to Mee, Taylor or McNiel, passes over 25 metres from midfield out to the wings and the long through ball down the channels that our 2 forwards are great at chasing down ahead of the defenders. Even crosses from the wing into the box are counted as long ball - and we definitely do that a lot more than most other teams.

Hoofball= big boot hoping to get lucky
Long ball= long pass to a colleague or into space that a colleague is running towards!

Depends on how you want to describe a long ball, are you telling the ball over the top by Liverpool for Mane etc to run on to is not a long ball? The premier league moves its goal posts, as for our long ball its kept us in the Premier for 4 seasons or should we go as you mention Bournemouth & how many points have they finished above us in them 4 seasons?
Sky tv has a lot to do with fans wanting a style of play & pundits that could not manage a kids team never mind a team in a league that seems to be run by amount of cash spent.

Can I ask who is differentiating between a Burnley "long ball" and a Man City "precision pass over the top"...?

Is suggest we use both hoof and long ball. Yes, it’s not great to watch, but I’d rather be in the Premier League than the 4th Div.....

It seems year on year as we gain more of a foothold in the Premier League we are going in the right direction with a reduction in long balls we play. Give until 2030 and we will be playing like Barca (3 million meaningless passes per game :D )

The Bournemouth we got the double over....
You dont get points for playing pretty, you get points for results. Dyches strength is playing a system to suit his players. We played excellent the first 2 games of last season, and only got 1 pt.
With a stronger midfield I have no doubt that our style of football will change again. Until then he'll do what is required to keep us up. Long may he reign

Since when has long ball been boring - it’s fast and effective. It’s also far more entertaining than watching expensive defenders play square balls to each other in front of their penalty area.

While I disagree with everything the op said, we looked at times last season like we'd lost the "mix it up" side of the game. Dyche's best football has been an effective mix of long ball and nice play, we need to keep that edge or it does start to feel a little route one. The appearance of McNeil made a difference as the ball started sticking out left, if we can balance the right side with a young attacking full back or winger we'll start to look a lot better.

We don’t ponce about at the back, playing pointless tikka taka and dangerous balls around the box, we choose to clear the ball from the danger zone as quickly as possible. I prefer it like this.

Is that the Bournemouth we seem to always beat/not lose against????

It is!!
In our two matches last season they had 1447 touches to our 1019. They had 1045 passes (more than we even touched the ball) and we made just 644.
They made 64 clearances whereas we made just 51.
How did we manage to score 7 goals for ourselves and even gift them their only goal with Ashley Barnes's own goal?

bfcmik wrote:Hoofball and long ball are quite different.

To be fair, we do hoof it more often than most... I can deal with the big punt to a front man, but we do sometimes hoof it to get rid rather than look for a pass.
Safety first I suppose, and we are quite old school and the 'if in doubt...' defending sometimes comes into play. As mentioned, I'll take it.

If I decided I didn’t enjoy watching Burnley play, I’d just stop watching. I wouldn’t bother creating an attention-seeking thread to try to justify my decision.

If Jonjo Shelvey hadn't been dropped half way through the season, we would have finished second last season. That's not good enough. Presumably launching a long throw in didn't count for Cardiff.

A reminder that, if Charlie Taylor had done the proper defending bit against Everton on Boxing Day, we could have possibly had a very different result.
He tried to play football and set Everton on their way after just 2 minutes and we never recovered although this was the turning point for the season.
The team meeting to analyse that match was probably very interesting.

Do you not watch us regular?

We often pass accross the back line until we give it back to Mee to launch.

I've no problem getting it forward early but we do ponce about with it quite often.

Yes I do.

We pass it to Mee, he launches it or we pass it to Tarks and he launches it. When our backs are against the wall we launch it to clear our lines. Odd times we try to ponce we tend to show why we shouldn’t.

It’ll only change when we have midfielders like defour playing who will show for a shorter pass and link defence to attack instead of by-passing midfield. We’re all crying out for a fit and healthy cm of defours quality and style, hopefully one will arrive this summer or soon as we continue our slow but sure evolution to a quality, established pl team.

It’s our way but it’s been exceptionally successful (at keeping us in the pl). Like most things about our club, I love that we’re different from the crowd and love it when the likes of Chelsea accuse us of anti football when really they’re butt sore that they haven’t spanked scruffy old Burnley. Tippy tappy football played badly is very very dull indeed. With the odd comedy moment when we give away a stupid goal. (Though it's not always easy to see the funny side.)

Entertaining excitement is to be had in the opposition penalty area. Get Mee and the rest playing like Man City, and there would be excitement in our own box as well; but would it be entertaining?
