Cartmel tomorrow

Post by Funkydrummer » Fri Jul 19, 2019 2:58 pm

I'm off up there tomorrow with my new partner for a nice day out. However I don't
have a scooby about horses, horse racing or anything remotely related to horses. Which
is surprising as I worked in Blackburn for 23 years !!!!

However, I digress. I would be ever so grateful if any of you racing pundits out there could give me
any decent tips. I won't hold it against you, I promise. :D

Great day out at Cartmel, we are getting the train from Carnforth. Make sure you take a cool box full of food and drink! Unsworth's Yard in the village is worth a visit if you like decent ale. There are a few Clarets (me and my mate) going tomorrow.

No tips as yet, mind you I am useless at the horses.

Have a great day Funky.

Cartmel is great and we've been there for the last few years but alas not this.

As a policy, I have backed the favourite in every race up there - and won on 5 of the last 6 visits

I don't know anything about horse racing but I do know a bit about driving round there on a race day. It's a bloody nightmare. Gridlock is not even the word for it, I just happened to be passing through and got caught up in it. The whole area seems to come to an absolute standstill. Give yourself a LOT of time and be very, very patient.

As mentioned above, make sure you check out Unsworth's Yard right in the heart of the village (providing you enjoy real ale that is!) and probably best to forget about the horses altogether as that's simply wasting your money!! :)

I do like my real ale, so a visit to Unsworth's yard sounds a great idea.

Cheers everyone.

Just a few ideas for the runners and riders would be nice.

Reporting back in after a fantastic days outing. The tips above plus one or two of my own
deliberations resulted in a day's profit of £26 and never bet more than £2 each way or to win.

Thoroughly enjoyed the experience which I didn't think I would after previous visits to, admittedly,
bigger courses and events. Didn't manage to get int the village, but you're right, it was heaving.

Thanks again to one and all. 8-) 8-) 8-)

not enough to pop into L'Enclume after racing then. Just remember this, a bad day at the races is better than a good day at work. lol.

If you're driving to the course, go through Grange to Flookburgh, then approach Cartmel from there. The traffic moves much better.

It's on today as well. Re Unsworth's Yard brewery, the guy who runs it most of the time was really friendly at first but seems to be suffering from tourist fatigue nowadays. Struggle to get a word out of him. Good job the ale is still good.
