Club captain
With the inevitable loss of Tom Heaton to Villa, not only are we losing our first choice keeper, we are also losing our captain and leader. So, who will likely take over the role as club/team captain? Ben Mee possibly? Or someone else.......

Re: Club captain
Ben Mee was captain during Heaton's absence so you would assume he takes the role on full time.
I don't see a lot of leaders in our team, sadly.

Joe Hart cheers people up with his lovely smile. He should be captain.

Ben Mee's form was terrible when he was captain last season,I'd look elsewhere....maybe Cork.

Didn't Westwood captain Crewe at a young age? I'd be looking to give it to him.

It wouldn't surprise me if Joe Hart doesn't already a captains armband on the top his arm, to go with his other big black bands.

Mee was captain when we were on our awful run last season and he was playing badly for the majority of games. Westwood has been a leader on the pitch and I'd like to see him given a chance with it.

If we get a new midfielder, he’ll more than likely replace Cork or Westwood.

Mee with Tarky as vice captain.

Tarks is a leader, Bardsley is a leader (when he plays), Westwood and Cork are leaders and have captained Premier League teams(Westwood captained Crewe at 18), Defour is a leader and was a captain in the Belgian first division at 19 I think, and I'd argue Barnes is a captain too. Dare I say it, Hart was I think captain of City and England at different times.
But the obvious candidate is Mee. For a start, he's done it before (successfully) whilst Heaton has been injured, secondly, he's a natural organiser on the pitch, and thirdly, he's the natural heir to Heaton as the long serving player who established the Burnley ethos in the dressing room on Dyche's behalf.
One thing the squad does not lack is leaders. Whether they're capable of filling the void left by Heaton - different question.

I pointed out to Father Jack last season how often Westwood can be seen during each game shouting out instructions and pointing colleagues to where they need to move to. He is an obvious choice for club captain.

Re: Club captain
I'm sure the club captain role at Burnley remains one of more importance off the pitch than it does on the pitch. I'm sure, if and when Tom relinquishes that post, it will be with that in mind.

Could rule my suggestion out then, although he was vice captain last season.ClaretTony wrote:I'm sure the club captain role at Burnley remains one of more importance off the pitch than it does on the pitch. I'm sure, if and when Tom relinquishes that post, it will be with that in mind.

We need to address this as part of our lack of options in the middle generally.
Our midfield signing needs to replace not only defour but Heaton too

Re: Club captain
First name on the team sheet should be Westwood.
I’d let him have a go at it.
Mee had a go, and wasn’t too good I’m afraid... affected his game I thought.

Re: Club captain
as Club Captain is seemingly more of an off the field role we should give it to Defour

Re: Club captain
HA HA - will be interesting to see who gets it but I think there are a few candidates. We were all surprised when Heaton got the role but it is very much an off field role more than on field.Vegas Claret wrote:as Club Captain is seemingly more of an off the field role we should give it to Defour

Barnes.
Imagine you pull out of a 50/50 and Barnes is captain....can just see the look from the captain.
Someone needed to tell Ash last night it was only a friendly.

Re: Club captain
I disagree with the Mee played badly brigade. The main problem was no-one was holding onto the ball with all the normal "made of glass" outfield players either injured or nursing injuries .McNeil's main contribution initially was to hold onto T'ball at least for a bit!Tricky Trevor wrote:Mee was captain for 8 months when we finished 7th.
