The day started so well too.
In all the years I've watched the Ashes, I've learned one thing.
If you have the Aussies down, keep 'em there.
If you have the Aussies down, push ‘em further down.

Big innings from Smith today, and a big decision for him tomorrow, though I doubt with a weakened England attack he'll enforce the follow-on. ;)
Of course we might just bat with the same application Smith showed, but somehow I doubt it.

Smith won’t (or shouldn’t) be making any decisions about the follow-on.

Horrible to go in for just a couple of overs. You can’t win.

In the circumstances I'd have sent out a night watchman for Roy here. It didn't turn out too badly against Ireland.

So their last 2 wickets put on 162,that's inexcusable,Joe's interview should be interesting.

Stuart Broad getting yet another 5 for,and his 100th Test wicket against the Aussies,If Jimmy's out for a while he'll become even more important.

Should've played Sam Curran,as an extra seamer,Jimmy was always going to be a fitness risk. :?

Psychology's a funny thing if you'd have said at the close.

Australia 284 all out

England 10/0

You'd say honours even, but the Aussies will sleep much happier, why didn't England go for the jugular :x

I guess being a cheat and bringing the game and his country in disrepute pays huge dividends after all. What short memories some people have.

Whatever you think of the sandpaper incident you have to admire and respect Smith for that knock today. Best batsman in the world for me.

Him or Kohli i'd say, they are 2 who can bat all day if needed for their team, and score runs in different conditions.

England have to take inspiration from his innings,he's shown that with the patience and due diligence,it's possible to score heavily at Edgbaston.

Now someone from England's top 4 has to match him.

Sadly our best batter seems to prefer to get a jaunty 70-odd then throw it away.

He needs to step up.

He does but he needs support,he can't do it all on his own,yes Smith played brilliantly, but he had able support from Travis Head,Peter Siddle and Nathan Lyon.

Quite a bit of doom and gloom on here.

People are allowed to play well against us. We just have to be able to pick ourselves up and go again.

The pitch looks good with a little bit in it for bowlers. Battle through, get your eye in and batting looks easy. Just how Test cricket should be.

If you give me the scores this morning with no Jimmy Anderson I would of bit your hand off.

Team selection was a ltitle strange but we have to go with that now.

Broad is supposed to be a top class bowler yet the number of balls the tail enders were allowed to leave wasn't good.

Isn't the line meant to be the top of off stump, yet there were many balls by Broad & Woakes that were easily to leave?

Anderson is a big miss!

Because they were absolutely knackered you nob jockey, with a massive workload due to Anderson being out!

I also think the ball got older, the pitch settled down and batting got so much easier. Plus the Aussie XI clearly bat decently right to the bottom.

That’s certainly true but I think the tactics really released the pressure off the Aussies.

So if Jimmy is now out injured for this test, what happens for the “10th wicket”

12th man is only there to field and run in event of injury - they can’t bowl or bat

I get that bit but I mean logistically

Say we are at 280 when the 9th wicket goes, what happens?

Do we declare?
Could Jimmy come out to bat with the 12th to run?

Would it be the same in 2nd innings or can he then be replaced?

As I understand it the "runner" is no longer an option (as it used to be) so effectively Jimmy would have to bat (and hobble and potentially make his injury worse) or simply we'd declare and he wouldn't come out. (Meaning his probable runs would be a massive loss for us!!! ;) )

Sadly I think this will be Jimmy's swan song series, but what a career from the boy from Burnley.

I think a lot would depend on who was still in. If a main batter was still in then I think he’d bat and try to hold an end up. If it was Broad or possibly Woakes or Ali then there’s probably not much point.

Steady start otherwise though,Siddle coming on now,he'll be hard to play in swinging conditions,Roy got a good ball i'm not sure there's much more he could have done about it.

Lyon also on now,big hour until lunch for England,if this pair can still be there then it sets up England well for the afternoon session.

Is anyone else watching between their fingers :)

I can't wait to finish work and sit down with a beer for the late afternoon/evening session. Hopefully we will be in good shape by that time and won't see a batting collapse. Steady start so for though.

England rotating the strike well getting through the toughest period. The Aussies only have a 4 man attack by choice so it will get easier.

They have far the better spinner in Lyon though.

You know it is coming, just where. It is usually a choice between being 4 down before we reach 50 runs or following a solid start, go from 120-2 to 158-7. Time will tell.....

Not a cricket expert although I love watching it! But now I can see the difference between a one day batsman and a test batsman.roy should be nowhere near the test squad imo block and pluck a odd run is not is thing, he looked like he could go practically every ball.On the other hand can see a 100 partnership of these two going well!

Roy could be a Test match batsman if he backs himself to play in a positive manner. His defensive game doesn't look the best but by playing positive he would kept the bowlers on the back foot.

He would of flicked the ball he got out to through midwicket easy with no pressure on.

He would of been a good one to have in when Lyon came on. He went straight after him in the one day game so the team played him positively. You can't just let him keep bowling at you.

Excellent 1st session by England, proper test match batting, pitch looks good if we apply ourselves as this pair have we can build a useful 1st innings lead.

I'm not fussed about the slow rate of scoring,i'll happily take 5/6 sessions of 60/1,that's how you win 5 day test matches.

They've both had good fortune, but you need to capitalise on that fortune.

Aussies now only just over 200 ahead, just keep chipping away lads.

Edit 50 for Rory Burns now can he go on?,he's played really thus far.

Thank goodness we have DRS in this game.

The umpires have barely got one right. Tough job and shows how good they normally are.
