Re: BREAKING NEWS: Drinkwater signs to fill the midfield gap
Yes massive shame. Just hope he loves it here. Gets his head down and embraces our culture as a club. Maybe realising that being loved by a club and its support outweighs sitting on another bench somewhere collecting bigger wages. Somehow doubt it though.FactualFrank wrote:Aye... was told a season long loan, but now read the article. Shame.
Lets enjoy it while it lasts though. People think I am not happy with his signing. I am amazed at where we are and the standard of players we have. Just a bit peeved we only have him until Jan and Chelsea held all the cards. Part of the frustration of being a little fish in a big pond I suppose. Wouldnt have it any other way though
Re: BREAKING NEWS: Drinkwater signs to fill the midfield gap
This is a really good signing but at the same time i cant help but feel disappointed its only till January. Hopefully hes fit enough now as he's definitely starting XI for us.

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Drinkwater signs to fill the midfield gap
If you look at his twitter feed he announced the signing at 16.51. Therefore he was working on assumptions and guesswork as our club hadnt announced it and needed to submit the deal to league to allow us to sign him as it wasnt going to be completed by 17.00ClaretTony wrote:No, Sam Wallace was the first to confirm the signing - before the fake accounts came

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Drinkwater signs to fill the midfield gap
Its probably down to wages and thats something we have to work with.
Our finances wont apparently strech to a full signing of a cm which is a shame. We may have signed a decent player but I reserve judgment till Danny delivers
He has talent thats not in doubt lets hope hes still got desire to reach his former heights.

A point which in no way contradicts what I said.Cleveleys_claret wrote:Chelsea never loan out a player without a fee attached. It is a business model they have. Buy players and loan them out. Obviously this wasnt the intention with DD but there is absolutely no way that they have loaned out a player without a hefty loan fee being attached to the move
My point being that the deal we have got - and its length - may well be the best that we could achieve today. Since we don't have the money for his transfer fee or his wages, then Chelsea held all the cards.

This.EarbyClaret wrote:Some strange comments on this thread
Could we afford to sign him outright - no
Would he have wanted to come even if we had - unlikely
Is he the highest quality midfielder we've been seriously linked with in this window - yes
Is the team/squad stronger with his addition - undoubtedly
have we missed out on any of our realistic CM targets - no. We can't compete with Palace on wages and as far as I'm aware everyone else we were seriously linked with stayed put aside from Mooy - who I doubt many would rate more highly than Drinkwater
I'm not sure what people expect the club to do. The deal on offer was obviously until January - do we accept that and have a £30M plus PL winning midfielder for five months or say to Chelsea it's a season long or not at all?
He's done a pre-season with Chelsea which has included a surprising amount of 'minutes' for a player supposedly told he was surplus to requirements. No concerns about his fitness or motivation.
He won't start immediately but it won't be long. Cork's place is most under threat. For whatever reason his levels dropped last season particularly pre-Christmas. A lot of that had to do with his cumulative workload and I think he'll benefit from someone else sharing the responsibility. What's more we could play a genuine central three in a 4-5-1 and still have a CM on the bench.
Struggling to see what's not to like about this and the window as a whole - would have preferred not to lose Tom but something had to give in the goalkeeping department - that aside stronger in all three of the other units.

Got there in the end! Happy with this signing and think that we have improved where we needed to....if I was being greedy I would have liked an extra wide player but more than happy with McNeil and JBG if we can keep them fit.

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Drinkwater signs to fill the midfield gap
Truthfully not trying to be negative but it shows just how desperate we were and how we had wasted a transfer window until yesterday on our search for a midfielder. Like I said earlier hope we can get him full time or maybe going back in for Phillips on a free with a large signing on fee when Leeds dont get promoted again.nil_desperandum wrote:A point which in no way contradicts what I said.

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Drinkwater signs to fill the midfield gap
I don't think we did submit a deal sheet at all, the signing was completed before then and Wallace knew that. The club wanted to get the interview done first before announcing it.Cleveleys_claret wrote:If you look at his twitter feed he announced the signing at 16.51. Lampard happy going with Zouma, Christensen, Tijora (? The lad we were linked with) and Rudiger I think it is. Luiz wanted a guarantee at weekend that he would be first choice. Lampard said no, every place is up for grabs. Fair play. Decided to ship him out rather than have him around the club. One of the most over rated players of my generationStayingup wrote:Haven't they just sold Luiz to Arsenal?

What an utterly bizarre signing.
I'm sorry, but am I missing something here?
We've got him for half a season?? I'm struggling to see the value here.
We've been utterly conned. Again.

I suspect he will sign, Leeds will offer him a stupid wage and put a daft release clause in - I reckon they'll get promoted this season sadly

Some heads need wobbling to Richter scale level! All signings carry a risk but this is one that ticks so many boxes that needed to be ticked, it’s madness to see this as anything other than a positive signing.
I’d be amazed if we’ve not discussed / considered a longer term option here. The impact on one of Cork or Westwood will of course play a part but this is part and parcel of football and managing a squad.
Great signing and one that was very much needed.

Agreed and we can now use in game subs in cm, something we have not been able to do for ages, unlike probably any other professional/semi team in the world. ☺☺☺☺DCWat wrote:Some heads need wobbling to Richter scale level! If we have 30 points when his loan finishes that will do me. If we do OK first half and he plays most of the games he will want to stay

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Drinkwater signs to fill the midfield gap
Personally think its a fantasic signing
We needed a midfielder and from all the players we were linked to
Drinkerwater was easily the most suitable.

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Drinkwater signs to fill the midfield gap
For example having used DD to create a goal we can bring Cork on to use his super reading of the game when he has fresh legs to see out a win. Hope that is positive enough for all you happy clappers. See look what filling such an obvious gap can do to transform things.summitclaret wrote:Agreed and we can now use in game subs in cm, something we have not been able to do for ages, unlike probably any other professional/semi team in the world. ☺☺☺☺

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Drinkwater signs to fill the midfield gap
This signing has so many positives.
Takes the weight off Cork and Westwood.
Imagine the benefits for McNeil and Benson learning from a midfielder who was the stalwart in a Premier League winning team.
Allows Defour time to get fully fit.
DD may enjoy our team spirit so much he wants to extend beyond Jan.. who knows ?
It's a great bit of business and unfathomable why some of us are picking faults.
Let's start with 3pts on Saturday.

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Drinkwater signs to fill the midfield gap
Super addition this, what i'd call a proper Premier League signing, a proven performer with good pedigree.
With us clearly struggling in the market to nail down permanent signings, the loan route is one which does eliminate the financial risk somewhat if you can persuade player and parent club to sign on a short term basis.
It will immediately put Cork and Westwood on their toes as Drinkwater will be waiting in the wings very shortly.
As spice says up thread we have to be mindful that such loans don't upset the team dynamic which is the bedrock of our success but i can't see that happening with the management team and culture that exists at Barnfield.

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Drinkwater signs to fill the midfield gap
I was a little disappointed that we hadn't got Drinkwater on for the full season, when I first heard the news.
Now I have time to take the move in I think it is a good deal for the club. If he turns out to be a duck egg, we can fire him off, if he turns out to be a ringer we keep him until the summer.
Best transfer window in ages. We have signed players in areas were we have been in need of quality. Adding Jay Rod and Drinkwater to the squad has at last improved our starting 11.
Dyche must be overt moon and well chuffed, because I am

I’ve read some utter tripe on here far beyond even what you come to expect...
Chelsea have now had our pants down
Should have gone for Mooy
Blah blah from the usual suspects that have been whining all day because nobody had signed.
We’ve signed a premier league winner with a point to prove for our midfield where we had a body short. What is not to like about it ffs

No, it's been done to enable Chelsea (and us for that matter) the option to make a decision in January. If they got an offer for him they could sell him.claptrappers_union wrote:I’d imagine the deal was done for 6 months just to get it over the line

We could easily have lost Tarkowski albeit for a healthy profit.
There aren't many past transfer windows when we haven't had to cash in our assets just to get by.
Heaton aside, we're stronger than when the window opened.. much stronger.
And I'm confident Pope will soon take over Tom's legacy

Sure happy about DD coming in , hey it would have been fun on here if we didn't snag him or anyone else for that matter .
