Favourite racecourse

Post by Local cricketer » Wed Aug 21, 2019 4:05 pm

Just watching the action from York do love a good day there.

What's everyone's favourite track punting wise or personal experience

I love Cheltenham and Cartmel for very different reasons. Cartmel is fantastic for a day out with young family

Difficult to choose as I have been to over 30 different courses over the years. Favourite meeting is the Derby, most profitable was Bath, really like Beverley but my favourite course is Chester.

With you on this. Especially the smaller ones.

York isn't too bad.

But not a fan of Aintree or Haydock or any larger course tbh. Always seems a better day out at Thirsk and Ripon. Also enjoyed Bangor.

Chester always looks a good spot but dont think ive been to a race there. Just on non race days.

Grand National was the worse race day ive been to. Didnt enjoy it at all.

Dont mind the john smiths cup though at york.

I've been to every course in England, Scotland and Wales and most in Ireland over the years.

I will never go to Wetherby again after losing two horses there falling at the last hurdle.

I love Ripon, Beverley and Hexham in the North. Ludlow is in a great setting.

Galway is a great meeting.

My favourite course and meeting anywhere is the Arc day at Longchamp in Paris. They put us Brits to shame. If the ladies wear a hat they gain free entry and the whole day makes Royal Ascot seem like second rate.

Been to loads of courses down the years.
York is the nicest course in the north but has been spoilt recently by the stag dos and fighting (as have lots of courses).
Ripon was very nice.

Been to Goodwood and Newmarket and they were both great - on both occasions the weather was beautiful and Newmarket had a fantastic outside long bar.

In terms of memories my favourite include -
Cheltenham for the Gold Cup in the See More Business year was special.
St Ledger at Doncaster to see Reference Point win on my mates 21st birthday.
Haydock one snowy Wednesday afternoon in February many years ago - first time I ever went to a racecourse and saw the great Forgive n Forget win.

Worst course i’ve been to was Catterick - it was carnage ! I did see Kim Tate from Emmerdale though in her heyday - she was with the late Richard Whiteley from Countdown fame !

Yorkshire scores high for me too, York, Doncaster and Ripon particular favourites.

Had a great day at Haydock Park once - for some reason - can't remember why exactly. Huntingdon on Boxing Day is a good day out - lacks the the pretence of some of the bigger courses.

Newmarket is very good, the place has something of an aura about it - didn't like either Ascot or Epsom.

Hard to pick a single one.

Hexham for the views

Newbury for the quality of action and social side

Doncaster for the good fortune we've had there with runners (1 winner, 4 seconds from 5 runners)

Cheltenham - especially November meeting and Festival Trials day - great racing, and great days out.

Naas and Navan in ireland for seeing good NH horses progress through the ranks

Leopardstown for Dublin Racing festival - the best 2 days racing in the whole jumps calendar

Gowran Park because I took my best picture as a racecourse photographer there (see below)

Punchestown because every year I get to see the very best jumps horses.

Also Uttoxeter, Chepstow, Haydock, Newbury and Worcester because that's where else I've had winners as an owner.

Beverley racecourse is right next to my old school. Spent many a PE lesson running round it. Surprised I’m not a Rovers fan after all that.

Ripon for me, especially an evening meeting on a sunny day.

Ludlow was nice too. Possibly because I only went once, and it was a wet and miserable day, but the beef broth they served in the very homespun cafe was superb. It was a beef stew, really, loads of beef, very thick, very hot, just the job.

Catterick was very good when you could stand on the cafe roof. They've closed that now.

Cartmel is good for the fairground rather than the racing, specifically the no-holds-barred dodgems. The sign says no bumping, but it is ignored. At least, it was last time I was there.

Cool - good luck with it, look forward to seeing results. The only thing I would say is there's not many racecourses that you can get close enough to a fence from the public enclosures to make full use of the wider angle lens.
