Re: REPORT: Another League Cup disaster
Good report but what is worrying is how much had been spent on those 11 players who played and wages - no wonder the board will not sanction anymore big spending.

Are you suggesting the board don't trust SD on spending money?
By your logic any Premier league side that gets knocked out by lower league opposition has a manager who isn't any good at buying players!

Er yes i do as the amount of money those players cost for a club of our size should be pushing for a regular 1st team spot - these are way off

Do you really think the board would risk alienating the best manager in decades?BOYSIE31 wrote:Er yes i do as the amount of money those players cost for a club of our size should be pushing for a regular 1st team spot - these are way off
Funny how they sanctioned the spending on Wood, Brady, Hendrick, Vydra etc.
As for players being way off, what do you think of the squads of Palace, Everton & Bournemouth as they clearly struggled as well?
Re: REPORT: Another League Cup disaster
Not really just commenting on the money that has been given and spent and none pushing for a regular spot - not good for the club at allClaretTony wrote:You do spout some crap don’t you? Bet you loved it last night, losing to Sunderland so you could have yet anothe go.

Re: REPORT: Another League Cup disaster
Surely any "big money" spent would be to improve the current first XI - not for squad building.
Anyway, as I have just put on the match ratings thread, I am still struggling to get my head around that second half performance after a first half hour that was really promising and, at times, really good to watch.

Suppose a good job Brady and Defour were not playing as would have been an almost 70 million team - thats madness

The BIG worry imo is that we were not even playing Sunderland first XI.

Re: REPORT: Another League Cup disaster
Apart from Hart I wouldn’t be concerned if we had to start with any of the others at weekend.
We are just collectively useless when we make wholesale changes.

Re: REPORT: Another League Cup disaster
I’d agree with that. That second half was horrible last night but if we put some of those players in at weekend they would probably be fine. Conceded two goals badly from well worked corners and we didn’t offer any real response then.Bordeauxclaret wrote:Apart from Hart I wouldn’t be concerned if we had to start with any of the others at weekend.

Agreed, that's probably why you see so many Prem teams struggling in the early rounds.Bordeauxclaret wrote:Apart from Hart I wouldn’t be concerned if we had to start with any of the others at weekend.

Re: REPORT: Another League Cup disaster
is it true that we had 8 internationals in the side last night? If so they certainly didnt turn up.

But they have backers remember !!
Re: REPORT: Another League Cup disaster
I think there is a lot to be made from having no natural leader on the pitch. There is not a cat in hell chance that the marking for the 2 corners had Mee or in the past Heaton been on the pitch as they would be looking and directing. Head scratcher really does do it justice.

And that proves that they find it no easier to win matches with their second eleven than we do.BOYSIE31 wrote:But they have backers remember !!

Re: REPORT: Another League Cup disaster
There's a huge difference between having a pool of players (basically one for each position) who may be called upon individually to replace a 1st team regular than to pitch 10 of them out there at once.BOYSIE31 wrote:Er yes i do as the amount of money those players cost for a club of our size should be pushing for a regular 1st team spot - these are way off
i do believe, though, that we are victims of a lack of rotation in the first team, this can't be doing our squad players much good, can it?

Re: REPORT: Another League Cup disaster
Think you've got to give some credit to a very hard working Sunderland side, in particular their wingers who gave Bards and Charlie a torrid time. Also Bards, Long, Taylor and Gibson looked very ring rusty. Possible victims of sticking to a regular 11. Difficult one that as that's our main strength i.e. same tight knit 11 who are fit, experienced and know each others game back to front ( could you see those last 2 Sunderland goals happening with Tarks and Mee in there?). My worry is hopefully it won't put us off getting Drinkwater some more game time. He looked class for the first 30 minutes and was at the heart of everything. Agree with a few on here that we never seem to fare well when we do wholesale changes.ClaretTony wrote:You do spout some crap don’t you? Re: REPORT: Another League Cup disaster
It's probably less about the ability of our second eleven and more about motivation. This sort of performance and result happens far too often to be just about ability.
Of course I understand it, as do most fans when you look at the attendance.

Did one on Twitter earlier but don't want to milk the Indiana Jones theme so am posting it on here so it doesn't go to waste. Was a bit down for a couple of minutes after the match but this image popped in my head and made me chuckle..
