Michael Owen calls out the Toon Army
He might not be a great commentator but he puts the Toon faithful in their place in this article.
"only a big club in the sense that it has a lot of fans and a big stadium."

"Liverpool could not match Newcastle's offer but I should have followed my gut instinct".
Says it all,the only thing that mattered to Owen was money. He paid a heavy price for that as did Newcastle!

Doesn't say that - Liverpool couldn't match Newcastle's offer to Real Madrid so the option he wanted wasn't available to him.CleggHall wrote:"Liverpool could not match Newcastle's offer but I should have followed my gut instinct".

I must thank Michael Owen for giving me one of the last times I truly enjoyed watching the England National Team. That hat-trick against the Germans, in their own back yard, is still a wonder to behold.

Says Shearer was on the verge of joining Liverpool.
Scousers will be gutted about that, they might have actually won the league with him.

Re: Michael Owen calls out the Toon Army
This is a truly remarkable day; Michael Owen, who makes a magnolia paint job look like a Jackson Pollock, has actually said something vaguely interesting.
The real question in all of this is what on earth he saw in Stoke City that made him sign for them.

Was one of the very best trips I have ever had at football. The pictures re-surfaced on facebook over the weekend due it being on that day in 2001.
As for Michael Owen or Alan Shearer... least Owen knows the sun doesn't shine out of his own arse.

You did well to put pictures on facebook in 2001 when it wasn't even founded until 2004claretonthecoast1882 wrote:Was one of the very best trips I have ever had at football. The pictures re-surfaced on facebook over the weekend due it being on that day in 2001.

Well technically yes, but had they come up on 25th December rather than the correct date with it "saying on this date" it may have looked a bit silly

Re: Michael Owen calls out the Toon Army
I have no axe to grind with Newcastle or Owen but I have to say I don't know why Owen came out with this stuff other than to gain publicity and sell his book - it is all disrespectful whatever he thought at the time.
I would be ****** off if a player who we had paid 120k a week to for a number of years came out and said that he had wanted to retire from day 1 and regretted the move and it was a step down etc. I mean - keep it to yourself mate and show a bit of taste and lets all get on with our lives - its disrespectful to normal supporters of all clubs who scrape by on less than half his weekly wage every year - and he is moaning about it being a step down. Good player in his day . Its his reality I suppose but he has last touch with the reality of all our lives and in particular the Geordie supporters. Makes him look a pillock in my view.

Re: Michael Owen calls out the Toon Army
must be great for the loyal fans who paid a fortune to watch him to now hear he detested them and the club whilst happily pocketing millions in wages.
He strikes me an an arrogant *****, he had some talent , but comes across as a truly arrogant and objectionable character.
**** pundit also.

It's not as though the Geordies saw much of him, spent most of his time on the treatment table along with Mark Vaduca and the other half dozen who were fleecing the club at the time.

He probably played more times for us than Owen did for Newcastle such was his 'injury' record.Darnhill Claret wrote:Be interesting if Steven Defour plays before Christmas.

Aye because the Geordie supporters looked good when they booed their own player being carried off after being knocked unconscious... Not really a surprise he doesn't hold him in high regard is it?BillyIngham'sShorts wrote:I have no axe to grind with Newcastle or Owen but I have to say I don't know why Owen came out with this stuff other than to gain publicity and sell his book - it is all disrespectful whatever he thought at the time.

Re: Michael Owen calls out the Toon Army
You could always be the bigger man and not mention stuff like that about the size of club etc. I know I would not need to come out with such crass remarks after taking the club for circa 20 mill. He can flog a few books by being controversial to make up for his lack of personality but there are other things you can mention throughout your long career without disrespecting a club you have played for in that way.deanothedino wrote:Aye because the Geordie supporters looked good when they booed their own player being carried off after being knocked unconscious... I’m fairly sure Andy Cole or Ian Wright or Gazza even didn’t need to belittle our club, certainly not in the same way. I stand corrected if they did.

Re: Michael Owen calls out the Toon Army
The “magnificent” Geordie fans went completely down in my estimations when I watched them in their relegation showdown vs Villa and didn’t hear anything from them all afternoon as they went down with a whimper.
It’s hard to argue with anything Owen said tbh.

It's even worse when they then try to deny they ever did it
