If we’d have dragged our first innings out a bit longer then maybe we wouldn’t need to. Just saying....

Exactly just one decent middle/lower order partnership and we wouldn't be in this pickle, apart from the Burns/Root resistance England were poor again with the bat in hand.

Smith to good for us rest of them are pretty average
But I take your point he plays for them hence them being too good
Hopefully finally get his number in the 5th test and go out 2-2

18-2 at the close just the small matter of a further 365 required for victory,Denly and Roy to resume in the morning.

The Aussie bowling attack are far from average. The unit as a whole is the best they have sent over, that I have seen.

Agreed, an excellent fivesome who can easily be rotated.
Our rotation Anderson, Wood and Stone are all crocks and Overton seems lacking, Broad has however stepped up to the plate and Archer is the future.

Disagree sorry if they were that good our current batting lineup wouldn't be scoring 250-350 as regularly as we have been

They are a good bowling attack, I was expecting a few more injuries on their side with their record and the series being quite rushed.

Nevertheless our batting has been nowhere near good enough. Lack of form, changing the positions just before the series, changing it again during. Just a complete lack of plan from the start.

In saying that Australia, Smith aside, haven’t been that much better.

Lack of red ball cricket for most of the players is telling.

I disagree with that. We were the side pushing for victory at Lords and played very well for a large part of the game at Headingley.

Often plays through bad back pain as well.
I wasn't blasting him. He took two big hits, sometimes when he is batting I feel he could appear more aggressive, but that isn't really his game. I think he is a great captain and with many years on his side should keep the role for a long while yet.

Broad has been superb for us but mainly in his first spell.

Archer has been superb in patches but got over bowled too soon coming back from injury. These one day bowlers need time to build their stamina when their bowling spells usually consist of 3 or 4 overs.

Then there's a drop off in quality. We have missed Anderson massively.

The Aussie unit just don't seem to bowl bad balls or certainly not enough to get you on top.

The only time England have looked well on top when Stokes had freedom before declaration at Lords and when he had no choice but to smash it at Headingly with Leach.

No matter which quicks bowl they do it in partnerships and to set plans. They're fit as butchers dogs bowling the same speed in the last over of the day as they would in the first. They all move it both ways just to make them unplayable at times.

Oh and then the spinner Lyon. Now he might not be as good as Warne but he's the best in the world right now. He holds his end up brillianrly. The wickets have dried up a bit recently but he puts us under huge pressure, beating the bat 3 times an over.

You have to go back to the first day at Edgbaston when they were 122-8,that was a massive advantage blown by England.

And arguably England had the better of the Lords test,it was Australia hanging on for the draw.

The difference is that whenever England have got into a promising position, either Smith/Labuschagne have built a partnership,or England have collapsed.

You can't rely on individual brilliance to win test matches, although Smith has made a huge impact on the series, the strength in depth of the Aussie pace attack aligned to Nathan Lyon, and England's brittle batting have proved impossible obstacles to surmount.

England have the opportunity to prove the doubters wrong, but the odds are against them.

The barmy army clearly still believe as Old Trafford is sold out tomorrow.

No shame in losing to the better team the problem is that less for Smith the Aussie batting is pretty ordinary. I think bowling wise they come out on top especially in the spin dept that said a lot of our dismissals have been very poor batting rather than good bowling. It could be that the pressure of facing good bowling told I guess not sure though.

The results so far read 1-1
IMO like I say bar Smith they are pretty average
But our inconsistent batting is making their bowlers look better than they are at times

Willing to give him time but he needs to improve it a hell of a lot more. Today’s the perfect day to “arrive” in test cricket.

Jason Roy gone. Good delivery but the gap between bat and pad was wide enough to get a bus through.

The late, great Richie Benaud once said "don't insult the viewers by describing to them what they can see for themselves". David Gower should take note!! I'll take a draw now.

I really feel for Ben Stokes. After his brilliant innings in the previous test, it'll be somewhat lost in all the recriminations of English test cricket that will surely follow if we go on to lose the Ashes series.

87-4 at lunch Denly's still there, but really he needs to be there at tea, with 4/5 wickets in hand to support him,TBH i can't see it Bairstow and Buttler aren't equipped to bat out a full session it's just not their game,i would love to be proven wrong, but this Aussie bowling unit is relentless.

We needed another 100 or so in the 1st innings and a session of batting to take time out of the game.

Looking at the positives Burns and Denly could be the answer to our opening woes, they've shown resilience against a world-class outfit,so you'd expect them to fare better in New Zealand.

We played well against Lyon and Starc but Cummins is the world no1 for a reason. Backed up by Hazelwood who has bowled 8 overs for 11 runs.

That's what makes it tough if you see off one bowler, another one can come on and keep up the pressure,in the 1st innings Burns and Root survived that 10 over burst from Cummins, and then Hazlewood picks up 3 wickets,i've just noticed Cummins in on for a ten haul surely not, even in this crazy summer.

The turning point was that clatter of wickets on the 3rd evening,up to that point England were in the game, ever since we've been firefighting.

The Aussies bowl to get our batsmen out. Our bowling has not been consistent in this series, in fact, there are times when I have wondered just what our plan was ---particularly against Smith.
The objective HAS to be to take wickets in whichever way possible.
As 'Bumble' has just said ---"Six and a half metres" :D :D

He probably only walked because he knew any review or replay would show he was out. A bit pointless to waste a review perhaps?
