England vs Australia 5th test

Post by tiger76 » Wed Sep 11, 2019 5:43 pm

Jason Roy and Craig Overton dropped for Sam Curran and Chris Woakes,Stokes will play but only as a batsman.

The Aussies have omitted Travis Head and brought in all-rounder Mitchell Marsh.

The Ashes may be lost but the series can still be saved, can't see it without a vast improvement in our batting however.

As above, should of been tried in the last test to bolster the bowling and prevent injuries. Archer is in the verge of burn out after the world cup.
Any of the batsman could make way though, not just Roy.

Makes you wonder why Bairstow keeps his place.

Because he spat his dummy out the last time they gave the wicket keeping gloves to someone else, despite him being a far superior keeper. If Ben Foakes isn't behind the stumps for the winter tour then there's something wrong.

Surely Buttler should be one of the first to be dropped. Has been poor throughout the Ashes and I don't remember him being too special during the world cup either.

I understand they are two different forms of cricket but he just seems to be out of form / having a confidence crisis at the moment to me.

Overton was a crazy, left field selection last time, who made that one?
Roy has had his chances (4), I can't see him making it in test cricket but others are lucky to survive.

He has that world class innings in him that can destroy teams so he gets a few more lives than others. He’s well out of form though and should have been dropped/‘rested’ already

Just bowl near wides down leg side to Smith. He will soon become frustrated and do something stupid. Cant bowl wide outside off to him as he will still reach the ball but bowling wide down leg will really wind him up. Its the bowling equivalent of how he bats. Cant just let him get 150 every time by walking across his stumps and nurdling to leg. Would be super controversial but perfectly legal. Its either that or bowl with a cannon ball.

If we really want to be controversial let Stokes bowl underarm and put less stress on his shoulder. :)

Not sure it's legal any more, but it definitely used to be!

Including Curan is a good call I believe and I agree with others that if the axe was being wielded then Butler must have been expecting it!

Correct, underarm bowling was made illegal following the famous incident in 1980/81.

100 years ago there were many famous practitioners of the art of underarm bowling and those who perfected the art of lob bowling got the nickname "lobsters".

They can't have Stokes, Woakes and Foakes. Our opponents will think it's a jokes.

Overarm bowling was allegedly only introduced to allow women to bowl when wearing wide hooped dresses in the late 18th century. All underarm before that. Imagine the game with only underarm bowling now!

Don't you just love statistics...
The average opening partnership in this Ashes series is 9 thats right 9 for both teams

11-0 so Denly and Burns are above average for this Test series :D

Decent first hour for England after being put in to bat.

53/1 whisper it quietly but I think Root will get a century here.

I was thinking that myself, and frustrated that its all well and good now the Ashes have gone.... Then remembered that we can still save the series which is still really important.

Its the Negativity in me!

Roots had two massive let offs with two easy catches going down.

He needs to make it count.

Root dropped twice already. Now let me think what would Smith do in the same circumstances? Century or double century?

Didn't Ashley Giles do this to Tendulkar on a tour of India? Can't remember whether it worked like.

Stokes out to an awful shot. He is not a test number 4 batsman.

England in danger of letting that good start slip, this is a good pitch we need to score at least 400 on this.

Denly was all at sea in his brief innings,Burns battled hard and then gifted his wicket, and Stokes played a daft shot after getting set.

Aussies moaning about the ball again, are they ever happy. Bairstow changing his bat now.

157-3 Root and Bairstow together, the latter just passing 4,000 test runs.

Root’s concentration levels let him down yet again.

Think it was more down to quality of the delivery rather than Root's concentration

Aussie bowlers went back to bowling tight, maiden after maiden.

Then a good ball getting Root out.

A good start becomes an average one.

How many times does he got to 50 but doesn’t go on.

It’s why he’ll never be one of the greats.
He’s got the talent, just not the concentration.

Agreed he should convert more, but when he gets a good un from probably the best fast bowler in the game currently then sometimes he's just got out to a good un

He does seem to have had more 'good uns' than most this summer, its a real test of his character as a leader. He is a top player and our best batsman so I've no doubt he will come through this spell.

Been my one criticism of him for a long time now. We were discussing this on the Wolves trip and looked at how often the four batsmen who we think are the best right now convert 50s into 100s. He's very much fourth in that list for centuries. More 50s than any of them but the least tons.

Root - 60 of which 16 have become 100s
Williamson - 50 of which 20 have become 100s
Kohli - 47 of which 25 have become 100s
Smith - 52 of which 26 have become 100s

Ridiculous from Curran again.

Time after time we are giving wickets away when we are already in trouble.

England throwing away an advantage once more, how often has that been the case in this series,at this rate we'll be lucky to get much over 250.

If you're being positive everyone of the top 7 has got into double figures, but no-one has gone big.

So far Tim Paine's decision to insert is being justified, seemed an odd call to me and many other people this morning, but once again this England side have found a way of getting in and then getting out.

England could be bowled out today, and i can see Australia batting for 2 days on this strip and posting a large number.

Has 22 always been a failure for you? What's the lowest score you would describe as alright.

All about opinion but I would say a start or chipping in for the team.

Single figures is a failure.

Too brittle, no leaders, no bo11ocks.

They way they fold is pathetic.

Every bowler they've brought in has our batters number, this supposedly long batting line up of ours is none existent.

Only positive is it forces changes of every level of the current set up.

Managing to make Mitchell Marsh look good should be the final nail in the coffin for some of these batsmen.
