VAR needs to challenge the referees, not protect them.

Re: VAR to be stepped up
So the on field refs have missed incidents that I presume would have been penalties (or a red card) 4 times in 80 games.
I don't suppose we can know how that compares pre VAR.
80! what a spaz.
40....

Cool, what we definitely need is more opinions and more delays.

Schars equaliser at Watford.
Thielemanns stamp on Callum Wilson.
A City pen when Lerma stood on Silvas foot.
A West Ham pen when Haller was fouled by Norwichs Trybull.
No mention of Jiminez foul on Pieters!!

Re: VAR to be stepped up
Did they actually name incidents? Surely if this represents a mid-season change the teams affected could surely be looking at the option of doing a "Sheffield United" if they then go down, or even if it is just a matter of a couple of league places, given the amounts involved.....Tricky Trevor wrote:Schars equaliser at Watford.

We need more disruption, more controversy and more talking points to justify 8 pundits and a referee on every panel!

No chance of him naming the incidentsZizkovClaret wrote:Did they actually name incidents? Re: VAR to be stepped up
There’s only been 40 games so far so basically 1 error in every 10 games.
It would be good if they could name the incidents but if one of them wasn’t the Kane penalty that should have been given against Newcastle they still have a long way to go....
Also given that these are the ones they are admitting to I suspect it is a conservative number tbh

I'd only seen the initial interview - Riley didn't mention the incidents then.Tricky Trevor wrote:They are given on sky. See link.

The lads watching the TV monitor should tell the ref if something needs looking at again.
There's no excuses.

So basically it’s more than 4 then....
Kane pen is one that should definitely have been overturned for a start

Re: VAR to be stepped up
Kane in my opinion might have been clever and leant into the challenge, so I can’t see why it would be overturned, more a case of going with the ref who made the original decision. Some decisions will often split opinions and I think this is a case in point. Unless there is total agreement, no decisions should be reversed.

Re: VAR to be stepped up
Anyone who understands the game from a player perspective would know that Kane is gaining balance with that movement to get his shot off. It is as clear a penalty as you will see if you understand why he leans to the left.Darnhill Claret wrote:Kane in my opinion might have been clever and leant into the challenge, so I can’t see why it would be overturned, more a case of going with the ref who made the original decision. Not overturning it and even Alan Shearer’s opinion on it were laughable. If the VAR understands how the player is trying to get a shot off it must be overturned.
This highlights the biggest problem that officials understand the laws but not how to play the game.

I understand the game from a players perspective, but to state that Shearer doesn’t understand the game from a player’s perspective is laughable.

As he’s right footed he wouldn’t lean to the left so your qualifications are non existent.

Re: VAR to be stepped up
Kanes was a dreadful decision. Lascelles had no chance of reaching the ball and threw himself head first. Missed the ball and contacted the man. PENALTY.
If he had tackled with his boot and had the same outcome nobody would be discussing it.

Re: VAR to be stepped up
Well to be serious for a moment if two top ranking ex- professionals like Alan The Sheep and Hibsclaret can’t agree, then I see no grounds on which to reverse the decision. Ref’s call. I admit my first opinion was in favour of Kane. That was because I’d concentrated on the defender. However when I then concentrated on the attacker I changed my opinion. From the position of the ref I’m guessing he was concentrating more on the attacker. So I saw it from both sides and therefore cannot justify overruling the ref. And I reffed for a couple of years too.

Re: VAR to be stepped up
Slight doubt, NO PENALTY.
Re: VAR to be stepped up
Whistle had gone though before the ball went in the net so there isn't much that VAR can do.claretdj wrote:Add Grealish 1 to the list @ palace.

Re: VAR to be stepped up
Not sure why you have to post 6 times.....
Shearer had his Newcastle specs on...and the other ex pro on MOTD said it was a definite pen along with ex Arsenal Alan Smith in commentary on Sky.
The defender never got anywhere near the ball and took Kane out head first. As mentioned above if it was his feet touching Kane it would be given. Kane is leaning left to protect the ball and get his shot off from the right.
You will not see a clearer penalty this season unless Ashley gets poleaxed by the Southampton keeper again.

Back to the golf now.
Re: VAR to be stepped up
Kanes was a stonewaller of a pen.
Lascelles used his ankle/foot like a swimmer does on the blocks to push himself into Kane.
You don’t “fall” and use your ankle like a spring.
