He’s doing well but I suppose the proof will be in the last 10km. Looking good though and I’ll think he’s going to do it!

Re: Kipchoge 1:59
A great achievement but surely easier to achieve with fresh pacemakers all through the race. Is that why it's not being officially recognised?

I hear they are trying this out for the new carbon neutral High Speed travel.
XR have offered to provide the pacemakers!
Well run EK.
Well done Jim Ratcliffe for supporting.

Yes. It wasn’t a race. His official world record is a couple of minutes slower.Leisure wrote:A great achievement but surely easier to achieve with fresh pacemakers all through the race. Is that why it's not being officially recognised?

Well yes, but to me it makes no odds... ridiculous human being, I broke 3 hours for a marathon about 5 years ago and the hours and toll it took on my body still affects me nowLeisure wrote:A great achievement but surely easier to achieve with fresh pacemakers all through the race. Just done parkrun and my first mile was just under 6mins and I was going for it. To think he’s done far better than that for 20 odd miles is mind boggling.
Incredible

Yeah not officially recognised Pete because it wasn’t a “race”, there were no drinks stations and he had pacemakers. #********.Leisure wrote:A great achievement but surely easier to achieve with fresh pacemakers all through the race. Is that why it's not being officially recognised?
Now I wasn’t there-even I’m not that old, and obviously I cannot swear to this being a fact but I would imagine that the first ever marathon runner didnt have those three things in place either, and we do it now because of him.
A man has run a marathon in under 2 hours. That is a phenomenal achievement. Not far off the moon landing for me. He ran from start to finish for 26.2 miles and did it in under two hours. Being unofficial means nothing to me, and I suspect him too. It’s almost as if they are taking something away from it by saying “unofficial” He did it, and it will inspire thousands.

Watched the last 20 minutes live on Youtube - incredible achievement. Scary that he didn't even look knackered after crossing the line; he was still running about cheering!

Re: Kipchoge 1:59
Incredible achievement.
I ran a sub 3hrs marathon, at Selby, in 1986. To do it I got down to 9st9lb from my, then, natural weight of 10st6lb. This is the big advantage the Kenyans/Ethiopians have. They carry no excess fat and are probably very weak, I was, but they are running machines; fit for nothing else.

It was BC but Pheidippides was running from Marathon to Athens under a bit more pressurebobinho wrote:

Re: Kipchoge 1:59
The man has demonstrated that under 2h can be achieved. Yes he had help via pacemakers and it wasn't a true race, where others affect the pace and rhythm but he ran under 2 magic hours!!!
Just the same for Sir Roger Bannister....pacemakers until the last dash, to break 4m mile. No one squeaked then!
We have witnessed a man making history.

Madness innit. 21.1kph on treadmill you’d do like 30 seconds max

My best km split is 3:36 (in a decent length run) yet he did 2:50 after 2:50 after 2:50....insane

You've nailed it.
The guy is effectively sprinting for 2 hours solid.
The vast majority of posters on here wouldn't be able to keep up with him for 100m and he's doing that for 2 hours.
It's unbelievale.
Well done on the parkrun BTW.
Re: Kipchoge 1:59
Yeah but I bet you managed your time without a team of pacemakers!jdrobbo wrote:My best km split is 3:36 (in a decent length run) yet he did 2:50 after 2:50 after 2:50....insane

Don’t get the fuss about Pacemakers. Not a patch on the Beatles but Gerry had a decent voice. Fairy cross the Mersey, a great misheard lyric.

Giant leap for the pharmaceutical industry.
Re: Kipchoge 1:59
The official record set in Berlin is one minute and a few seconds over 2 hours.
I see no reason why in an actually race that he can’t break the 2 hour mark given the right conditions, running partners etc.
It will happen, now someone has shown it can be done it’s only a matter of time
