Buying a British built car
Buying a British built car
I am thinking of changing my car and would PREFER to drive a British manufactured/assembled family size vehicle (I'm backing Britain). These are my options and any feedback from motoring enthusiasts would be welcome.
BMW Mini Countryman (nearly new)
New model Nissan Juke (brand new)
Nissan Qashqia (nearly new)
Range Rover Evoque (3 years old)
Vauxhall Astra (nearly new)
Are there any other options that I have overlooked?

Out of those listed definitely the Evoque. Another possible alternative Jaguar XE.

If you are going for looks the Juke won’t be a contender.

Depends where you live?
The Juke performs far better in the Birmingham area than Burnley.

Stay well clear of the Astra and Evoque, even if brand new. Terrible cars.

Hi Bosscat,
You obviously know Jaguars, what’s your opinion of the new XJ. Looks a beauty to me, but you probably know more about the nitty gritty than I do.

Indian with potentially a ford engine.

Yeah its a looker but I wouldn't swap my XF for it. Neither are very parking friendly in Supermarkets .Heathclaret wrote:Hi Bosscat,

I drove an E-Pace recently and thats a cracker... my Step Daughter has an F-Pace ....
I dream of one day owning an I-Pace all electric ... but at around 70k starting price and the infrastructure still not there fully (although IanMcL seems to manage with his Tesla) for charging on long journeys its out of my bracket...
I am also toying with a Tesla next up possibly ... they are all coming down into reasonable money as the tech improves.

Would have kept my Qashqai had it not been for the diesel pollution Tory balls up - now driving 2017 LEAF quite happily.

Re: Buying a British built car
Seriously- forget the Astra. Absolute nightmare, 18 months in ( or maybe less ) , the engine management warning light will be on constantly, mainly on the diesel, but the petrol ones are so flat, you'll have to rev the nuts off it. Also the TPS is a nightmare, lose 1psi and the warning light is on. Pump it up, the light remains on. Absolute sh**e.

My Astra engine is fine... then again it is the GM engine and you can't get them anymore so it's not really useful.Claretitus wrote:Seriously- forget the Astra. I like my works car which is an E-pace, but make sure you get a half decent spec, they're very basic if not.Bosscat wrote:Yeah its a looker but I wouldn't swap my XF for it. Neither are very parking friendly in Supermarkets .

My previous works car was a top spec Passat Estate and whilst not as easy on the eye, it was one of my favourite cars I've driven. It all depends how much time you spend in the car, I probably drive 1000-1200 miles most weeks so its all about comfort, but can understand if you're only doing 100-200 miles a week then its not as important.

I have decided to test drive the NEW Nissan Juke which has received good pre-launch reviews in the motoring press. Will feed back when I have and will compare it with a 3 year old Evoque.

The E-pace I test drove was the HSE ....very nice, but my XF is bloody great and I am loathe to part and probably won't
I went out and bought the Mrs a Citroen C3 ex demonstrator (6 months old 79 miles on the clock) from our local Citroen dealer in Cross Hills...
Was a damned site less money than trading the both XF in and our old DS4 Citroen for an E-pace

Re: Buying a British built car
Austin Maxi or Morris Marina mmmmm difficult choice.
Re: Buying a British built car
Had an Austin Maxi... it was brilliant(ish) ... It turned into a double bed very easily by pulling out the headrests on the front seats, moving the front seats forward and fully reclining.... followed that with an Austin Princess (Wedge) 2.2 and 6 cylinders very similar ability to turn into a bed .mikeS wrote:Austin Maxi or Morris Marina mmmmm difficult choice.
Used to spend many Skipton Saturday nights (not always on my own but shhhhhh the wifes listening) parked down Alma Street by the old courthouse, with the keys at my m8s to avoid the problem of being drunk in charge .
All this after a night of Rockin' at the Yorkshireman Pub on Sheep Street. Heavy Metal/Rock Nights every Saturday in the early 80's.....
Never had a Marina but have driven a few .
Ahhhhh the 70's and 80's the "Glory years" of British Leylands wonderful offerings.

Re: Buying a British built car
Had driving lessons in a mini then passed my test in the family Morris Oxford. The headlight housing showed up exactly where the front of the car was and the fins at the rear were excellent for reversing and parking. It drove "like a tank", it went where you steered it unlike the Marina which my parents bought as the next car. That was akin to a ballet dancer on ice whenever you steered it round a decent bend !!!

I drive a juke and love it, small fuel tank and very heavy car but I like it.
I work at bmw mini and if I didn’t need to cart around my fishing gear I’d have one like a shot.

Bit too much for my budget but the brand new UK built electric/petrol hybrid Corolla (yes the name has been changed back again from Auris) is getting excellent reviews in the motoring press. If you're looking for a new family hatchback (rather than an SUV) then check it out.

Evoques should come with their own low-loading trailer, they spend more time on one of those than the road. Terrible reliability and crap dealer service considering the price.

I wouldn't touch that brand after a load of problems with a 15k 3 year old Freelander that I was told not to drive in wet weather, by the bloody dealership! In the trade, know loads of people with various problems, consistently score very poorly in reliability surveys.Bosscat wrote:Have you had a bad one pimlico ... my m8s wife has had hers with no bother for 2 years (its 5 year old) and not a problem....

Re: Buying a British built car
Apparently Jag told them that they were changing the manufacturing method of the balance shaft so she had to wait 5 weeks for her car to be repaired waiting for a balance shaft that was in short supply.
Hoping for her it’s all good now.
