Bolton Wanderers - 10 Years Ahead !!!
Is the 10 Year Ahead assessment the worst judgement in football history.
Bolton suffer two relegations, financial collapse and a 7-1 reverse to Accrington Stanley as Burnley compete in Europe and cruise into sixth position in the Premier League 62 places above you.
What a time to be alive.

For me, it's up there with ...... " No thanks, lads, guitar groups are on the way out " ( Dick Rowe , Head of A&R at Decca records, on turning down the Beatles ) and, " If I were you, son, I'd go back to driving a truck " ( Jim Denny, Manager of the Grand Ol' Oprey in Nashville, after Elvis Presley appeared there early in his career ) ....

Hmmm.
In 1970,the manager of a club not many miles from Bolton who proclaimed he had the Team of the Seventies,- a team which was relegated the very next season after over twenty years in the top flight, - must be a contendor.

Yep.
Worth remembering - making bold statements has a habit of coming back to bite 'ya bum.
As does gloating.
But we've all done it.

Re: Bolton Wanderers - 10 Years Ahead !!!
We’re where Bolton were ten years ago, so from that point of view it was pretty accurate.

Re: Bolton Wanderers - 10 Years Ahead !!!
The gulf between our clubs is shocking.
It's great to see us so far ahead of all our Lancashire neighbours.
But #10YearsAheadDay isn't really about Bolton.
It's about Owen Coyle and what happens when you abandon loyalty and honour in favour of a quick fix and an overdraft.

Re: Bolton Wanderers - 10 Years Ahead !!!
Just noticed that Bolton are away to Rochdale on the 11th Jan and we're away to Chelsea. For those who are not going to Chelsea, who else would like to visit Rochdale as "home" fans to support the lower league team(s). Could be a fitting 10 year tributeRowls wrote:Looking forward to 11th January!

Good point and easily overlooked. Always worth gloating while you're on top because it'll all change again.martin_p wrote:We’re where Bolton were ten years ago, so from that point of view it was pretty accurate.
You could point to a vast gulf between Sheffield United and any club in the Prem three years ago. Outside of the 'big' six, we're all going to journey up and down the divisions over time. But I'm still all for laughing at a neighbour while we can.
Re: Bolton Wanderers - 10 Years Ahead !!!
There’s little point in gloating as Coyle was essentially right on that particular point (which is actually good news for us). What we don’t want is for Bolton to be ten years ahead of us now!NottsClaret wrote:Good point and easily overlooked. Always worth gloating while you're on top because it'll all change again.

Re: Bolton Wanderers - 10 Years Ahead !!!
10 years from now could see fortunes reversed; you never know. Would be remarkable if we stayed where we are even with SD in charge and more so should he leave as some posters on here think will be the case by the end of this season.
Looking ahead these days is not helpful, these days we should enjoy the present and look back with pride over the last 7 years and maybe the last 11years.

I know what you're saying. Whilst there were no actual buckets, we were back to having to sell before we could buy from 2012 and Dyche could only spend £400k on Barnes before the next promotion. The first lot of PL money barely lasted three years, never mind ten.Dyched wrote:Or “We’re set up for 10 years” Barry Kilby, May 2009

The begging buckets was far fetched. But going from what he said to having sell our star man a few years later was laughable.Fretters wrote:I know what you're saying. What exactly was laughable ?
Without the first promotion we would have gone bust - we’d have been looking at a £10m loss in 2010/11. Maybe Kilby was pointing out that financially we were able to pay off our loans, buy back Turf Moor and Gawthorpe and avoid going into administration and the spiral impact that would have.
Without all the things we used the money for we would certainly have been stuffed for at least 10 years.

No Buckets but don't forget the "Parachute payments" which lasted just long enough to see us back into the Prem in 2014 ... the rest is history ... a brief drop back ... and then that "Fan-bloody-tastic Bounce Back" as Champions of the 2nd tier....Fretters wrote:I know what you're saying. Yes we sold players but others stepped up to the plate.
Bloody hell there are some with very short memories on here
(I'm not on about you fretters but some of the posts above)

Re: Bolton Wanderers - 10 Years Ahead !!!
Bolton were already something like £70million in the red ten years ago.martin_p wrote:We’re where Bolton were ten years ago, so from that point of view it was pretty accurate.
We're at complete polar ends to where Bolton were financially ten years ago. And it was financial power that Coyle was talking about - that's why he jumped ship and betrayed us, he wanted to splash cash around and make multi-million pound signings that we (nor Bolton for that matter) could afford.
But as I've said before, #10YearsAheadDay isn't about Bolton at all.
It's about Coyle.

Plenty of point in gloating at Coyle - he displayed all the loyalty of a bitch in heat having spent the past 18 months preaching on high about it.martin_p wrote:There’s little point in gloating as Coyle was essentially right on that particular point (which is actually good news for us). Us Burnley fans and Coyle like to bandy about biblical references and whether he should be Moses or Judas but the real analogy is the parable of the man who built his house upon the sand.
Kilby and the board were laying foundations built upon rock. Coyle didn't like the hard work that this entailed and so he jumped ship, betrayed us and ran off to have a party in the house built upon the sand.
And great was the fall of it.

Fair play to the man I say. I mean he realised that he was a charlatan who had got lucky so he decided to cash in while he could.Rowls wrote:Plenty of point in gloating at Coyle - he displayed all the loyalty of a bitch in heat having spent the past 18 months preaching on high about it.
