Piriformis - any advice?

Post by Im_not_Robbie_Blake » Wed Dec 11, 2019 4:32 pm

I have had problems with piriformis syndrome for two years. I'm fine walking, running and sitting, but standing still brings the symptoms on. Anyone else have the same problem? Anyone else found a lasting solution without surgery?

That eerie silence is while people Google piriformis and then wince in sympathy. One of the problems in getting older (I'm 44, so hardly past it) is that the body starts to creak and ache like a bugger. My knees are knackered, my left shoulder gives me constant jip and I have phantom pain from a double hernia operation six years ago.

I go to the gym every day. I'm fit as a fiddle and in my 40s. my advice would be get off the settee and join a gym. its good for both your mental and physical health. sounds like sausage could do with taking my advice. you shouldn't be having those symptoms at your age. I take it your unfit and overweight if your body is giving you that much jip.

Thanks for the post. I possibly have this. I’m waiting for an x-ray to see if I have onset arthritis in my hip but after reading the link I’ve posted later I’ve a feeling you have diagnosed me. I had some anti-inflamm gel from a previous injury and rubbing that in and self massaging certainly helped.
Anyway here’s the link: https://www.medicinenet.com/piriformis_ ... rticle.htm

Targeted exercise of the muscles around the piriformis is about the only way to combat it. The issue with piriformis injury is that you basically have a weak backside, so things like pilates, aimed at core strength and activating the correct muscles for certain movements, will help (it sorted mine anyway)

Thanks to all who replied. I have been doing the stretching exercises for a year and seem to make little progress. I will look for a suitable Pilates class.

Team Edmondson Pilates. Can’t recommend them enough. They even do a class aimed at people who run.

Not a bad player, just what we need, but his wage demands will rule him out, I fear.

I had a word with my niece, she has a physiotherapist masters. She said if you can get one of them firm foam rollers they help.
I had a chronic calf problem for 18 years and the foam roller sorted it. you are meant to sit on it and roll your arse across it, concentrating on any problem spot. I found with my calf it was easier to lie on my belly and Mrs T. rolled it for me. She got far more pressure than I could and when she found the little pea,Knot, that was my bother she applied more pressure. Good luck.

Firstly can I offer you my heartfelt sympathy, I know where you are. I had very similar symptoms many years ago, I'm 66 now and even though you stated you want any suggestions that don't involve surgery I eventually did go under the knife almost 10 years ago and prior to that I did try many methods to ease the pain on top of the medication. I bought a canvass covered stretching bed I would lie on it and arch my back then pull myself up it helped at the time but it I still suffered when I was out and about, driving was painful and the season prior to surgery I gave my season ticket away more times than I used it, before half time I was in agony. The surgery was 80% successful, nothings ever perfect but the permanent pain was cleared I get twinges and aches but I so glad I had the op. I do hope you find relief but surgery did it for me, good luck.

I had it about 10 years ago and was advised it was due to sitting on a wallet. Stopped putting a wallet in my back pocket and it cleared up completely within 12 months
