Mad Friday

Post by ElectroClaret » Fri Dec 20, 2019 11:24 am

Anyone going down town?
Does this lunacy still occur?

(Haven't been out on MF for years.)

Is Mad Friday the same day that the 'once-a-year' brigade go to the pub and then fanny around because they a) can't find their purse and b) can't organise themselves into rounds?

Will be down in Burnley today. Haven't been out on a Mad Friday for a while so will be interesting. Will be good just to see the pubs busy for a change, can't believe how much the nightlife in town has deteriorated.

I'm staying in the house all day today.

Last year I'd been down to the Turf to get some tickets for a game and came home on the bus. Everything seemed fine until the following morning when panic hit when I couldn't find my wallet ahead of the trip to Arsenal. Because of the chaos, the bus was free but I'd got my wallet in my hand having got out the bus pass that I didn't need. Somehow it must have dropped and I left it on the bus. I never did find the kind soul who found it and handed it in but I made a donation to Pendleside Hospice as a way of saying thank you.

So, I'm in the house, I'm not going out today, and I know exactly where my wallet is and where my Bournemouth ticket is.

Enjoy for all those daft enough to go out.

Is Mad Friday relevant to many? Aside from Schools breaking up do factories and suchlike actually finish today?

Genuinely have no idea and before retiring I worked in the fruit industry where it was 364 days a year.

Did it ever exist before the 2000's?

Just to say Tony that your donation to Pendleside was a great jesture. My father-in-law died in there one year ago tomorrow and they were nothing short of magnificent for the 10 days or so he was in there. Unbelievable people who deal with things on a daily basis that most of us would shy away from. Many thanks to all of them.

No but I can't see too many going out on a Monday. And yes but back in the day it didn't have a name other than possibly 'last day p!ss up for Christmas'.

I was so relieved at getting it back, and I couldn't thank the person who handed it in, so I thought this was the next best thing to do and that was the local charity that I decided on. I've visited people there at end of life too and I have to say they are looked after magnificently.

In my experience most of the trouble on Mad Friday comes from older people out on their works do's. Only go out once a year, can't handle their ale and then behave like complete *****.

I used to go out every mad friday, as generally, that's when I finished work for the year.
I'll be working xmas day and boxing day again this year so it seems a bit pointless.

Might have a few at home and see what's on the magic lantern

I’m venturing out in to Leicester this evening for my wife’s works do. It hadn’t occurred to me that it was “mad Friday.”

The school run traffic was wound me up today, further exacerbated by the rain and sh*t drivers.

A few pints might relieve the stress.

Chuckles rang me earlier to invite me down town with her works lot for a few. Nice enough folk but I politely declined.

25 years ago I’d be eight pints down and three fingers in...

Now, I’d rather stick pins in me eyes...

Mad Friday and New Year’s Eve are two nights to avoid pubs. Unless you like waiting ages to get served whilst being bumped into, jostled and have ‘stuff’ spilt onto you by hysterical screaming bubble heads.

It used to be manic in the 90s in Padiham when the whole of Main Gas emptied into the White Horse. But it used to be more day drinking than night then.
Factories finishing at 11am and straight to the pubs.

Was out in Burnley last night. Wouldn't have said it was overly busy. Seemed to be a decent atmosphere, no sign of any bother, I was home for 1 though.
What happened to Smacks being an indie bar? Now seems like they just play the same generic crap you get in all the other pubs/bars.

Just to say Tony that your donation to Pendleside was a great jesture. Yes, a commendable gesture. Without trying to detract in any way at all, can I just give abrief plug for Derian House as well. If anyone is looking to give a charity donation this Christmas, Derian is the children's hospice for OUR area. Because it is in Chorley, many people don't realise this. It does wonderful work and helps parents and kids from throughout Lancashire through the most terrible of times. I know, I have personal experience. It costs something like £5 million a year to fund and the amount it received from the Government is a pee in a pot!(Come on Boris Johnson!) So if you can spare a few quid, it wil be very welcome, but don't let it stop you from supporting Pendleside as well.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to one and all. As Dave Allen used to say "May your God go with you"

Lack of any imagination among Burnley licensees. Most town centre bars are interchangeable with crap music and drinks. Pile them in and get them drunk cheap seems to be the plan. They are too scared to break from the norm and try something different. Or lack any imagination.

Even Smacks just play the same generic/cheesy crap as all the other bars now. Tbf it's hard for the pubs and bars when the younger generation want to drink at home till midnight before going out. If you want a proper night out these days you have to go over to Leeds or Manchester.

You only have to see what happened in The Turf last saturday for a prime example. Theyre outside that pub pre and post match for hours every week.

Pub gets stormed. Police (and bouncers) nowhere to be seen. Well the bouncers exited the pub so they were seen...

Pub gets stormed during match when it wouldn't be expected so that's the fault of the fuzz? Get real. Pub is a dive outside of match days in any case. Nothing new to see violence there.

You only have to see what happened in The Turf last saturday for a prime example. Theyre outside that pub pre and post match for hours every week.

Pub gets stormed. Police (and bouncers) nowhere to be seen. Well the bouncers exited the pub so they were seen...
Not quite sure of the incident, obviously wasn't that big a deal, but you're suggesting the police knew it was going to happen, and walked away so that it could? Really?

The police and bouncers are outside that pub en masse before during and after every game. The bouncers scarpered and the police did nothing.

And it was definitely a big deal. Much nastier than what happened in the miners where burnley fans got lots of jail.

Burnley police definitely like to give it their own.
