McNeil Needs A Rest
He is not himself and today other than his cross to Brady contributed very little. Sadly he runs around looking disinterested so hard to read if he cares. He gives the ball away very easily which is fine when making a major contribution. His error today led to their goal, and the same happened in the first half
With JBG back we might see him and Hendrick start on Saturday and use Dwight as an impact player as sub (we sadly dont jave many game changers)

Re: McNeil Needs A Rest
and that's the problem with such a mediocre squad - most know they will start the following game no matter how they play, investment desperately needed at the beginning of January
Re: McNeil Needs A Rest
he's been one our best players so shouldn't be dropped. nobody in midfield or up front played well so dont see the need to single him out

McNeil is the only player who can pass the ball, cross the ball, hold up the ball and carry the ball properly.
If we drop him we're doomed

he looks knackered but he has to play as he is our only creative player - no way you can drop him against his old club, serious point to prove

That's the worry he's our only creative outlet ATM,he was punished for the mistake today though, this league is unforgiving, and that'll be a harsh lesson.

He needs a club where he is allowed to attack where he is given space. He will be off.

Re: McNeil Needs A Rest
A few need a rest based on that showing. Was there a game plan today against a nervous side who couldn't really afford to lose? Going 1-0 down had an inevitability about it despite it coming so late but we just squandered the rest of the match to them as we had done the previous 80 mins. I imagine that all managers have plans for games(even cunning ones) but I would never have envisaged a centre half who hasn't played all season being thrown on as a centre forward when there were already two there to begin with. Desperately poor fayre for either fan or neutral and just again unacceptable.

Re: McNeil Needs A Rest
He could do with playing in a position where we can get him on the ball and influence the game.
Increasingly, that's somewhere other than the left wing. Everton stopped the ball getting to him tout there today and when he got the ball there in his own half they had a pretty good idea what he was going to try.

Very harsh on a lad who has won us many games, through his skilful crosses.
One bad 'un is no reason to get on his back.

Re: McNeil Needs A Rest
There's nothing wrong with having a rest and coming back more determined-its a squad game as Hendrick and Rodriguez are proving. There are a huge amount of talented players in the PL not guarranteed to start. With JBG back it gives us a serious option-sadly Brady has been given an opportunity in the past 3-4 and something does not appear right with him-hes not even being considered for free kicks. One of his crosses today was shocking

Re: McNeil Needs A Rest
McNeil is a defender in our away set up. I'm not saying that's right, but that's how it is.
Keep a clean sheet and nick a goal. If the other side score first there is no plan B (Tottenham away, concede after 5 mins and we're finished).

Re: McNeil Needs A Rest
Seems to struggle away from home, when we dont have the ball, he needs it regularly to get into the game.
When being asked to defend for a large percent of the game it isnt when he is effective as he is weak, and not the fastest without the ball and running back towards his own goal.
He is best with the ball at regularly and running at the opposition.
You can count on 1 hand the opportunity he has had to do that in the last 2 games.

Re: McNeil Needs A Rest
Only just got in from Goodison and I usually like to collect my thoughts before posting. However I fully agree with the post. In fact, a rest for our Dwight is long overdue imo. At times he may be our best outlet, but for me he lacks the physicality at times in our system. The way he gave that ball away that led to their goal was very poor. Certainly not the only player that was guilty of a poor performance, there were one or two more experienced players who for me were left wanting.warksclaret wrote: ↑Thu Dec 26, 2019 5:19 pmHe is not himself and today other than his cross to Brady contributed very little. Re: McNeil Needs A Rest
Agree with this. But our manager is too stubborn/rigid to change this system....particularly when he needs to be proactive. At 0-0 today he could quite easily have taken Wood for JBG and moved McNeil into a number 10 position. SD just seems to change wingers for wingers and forwards for forwards (or sometimes Kevin Long!!?!).claretspice wrote: ↑Thu Dec 26, 2019 6:02 pmHe could do with playing in a position where we can get him on the ball and influence the game.

SD need to be more flexible with his shape and his 'game-plan'. If he needs to bring 2 or 3 players in to be able to do this then I'd be happy for him to do that.
Re: McNeil Needs A Rest
He doesn’t need a rest. We don’t have anyone else to come into the team. Brady? No chance. We need to change our tactics to allow McNeil’s talent to flourish.

As an aside has there ever been a player more disinterested than Brady ? He Just exudes “couldn’t give a sh1t” What was all that with the water bottle on the bench today ? Bants with Drinky ?

Re: McNeil Needs A Rest
All my mates agreed In the pub before the game he’s our only attacking outlet! If anything Brady as a senior player should be doing more. Dwight has had a good season so far based on his ability but I wouldn’t blame him or drop him as its the position he’s been asked to play

He needs to be allowed to do what he's good at rather than constantly spend his time as a second left back.

McNeil is a footballer. Playing for us he spends most of the game playing as a 2nd left back or watching the ball sail over his head.

Re: McNeil Needs A Rest
He is the most creative player we currently have and should operate just behind the front two. To have him consistently chasing back is a complete waste of his talent. Everton remembered how well he played against them earlier in the season and subsequently ' doubled and roughed him up'. This certainly worked and we had no 'outlet' at all. The midfield were chasing shadows and although the defence were outstanding it was only a matter of time before Everton got their clear chance.
Until we inject more players of McNeil's talent into the team games will always be won or lost on an attricional basis.
C'est la vie as they say in Padiham

Re: McNeil Needs A Rest
Love to see him playing as a "floating number 10" with an almost free role to create. Under Dyche there's more chance of Stephen Hawking getting that role, and he's been dead a year.
Re: McNeil Needs A Rest
He’s literally the only creator in the team. If you want him to track back all the time/become another Boyd-esque marathon runner, then go out and buy a creator for the middle. Can’t have it both ways.

Re: McNeil Needs A Rest
People getting on the OP's back for posting this need to look at his game. He does tire through 90 minutes and he has been a main stay in our team this season (first full season) however he not been at the levels he started the season. He does look tired and maybe a bit frustrated so I agree that a game or two on the bench might do him good. He will play a big part in helping us grind out some W's at the end of the season but the young lad looks nakered after a busy few weeks.
