Your team vs Man Utd

Post by Mala591 » Fri Dec 27, 2019 12:47 pm

Rest McNeil for one match?
JBG back in for more attacking threat?
Play Hendrick left midfield where he looked comfortable last season?
Give Brady one more chance to impress?

I would start with:

Pope
Bardsley Tarks Mee Taylor
JBG Westwood Cork Hendrick
Barnes Wood

The decision is yours.

McNeil wouldn't appreciate being rested against MU. He'll want to play and expect he will.

If we want to get anything from this game then Barnes/Wood have to start. Drop either of those and we're knackered.

So, I would put McNeil in and start JBG on the bench. Hendrick to help defensive duties and start RM.

Pope
Bardsley Tarks Mee Taylor
Hendrick Westwood Cork McNeil
Barnes Wood

I don't expect JBG to start a game yet.

I think you're right with your team selection, Frank, that's what it will be. To be honest, we don't have many other options.

Bardsley JT Mee Taylor
JBG Hendrick Westwood McNeil
Long Wood

Hoof for 80 mins and if that doesn’t work bring Barnes and Rodriguez on JBG and Hendrick for the last 10.

Revolutionary.

I'd go with this, cork lightweight against a United midfield likely to have Pogba starting. We need JBG with his occasional piece of quality, even if he is taken off after an hour to protect him.

Whatever the team, can see us sitting deep again as everyone knows United's strength is on the counter with their pace, something we lack and won't therefore leave ourselves exposed to.

Robbie Brady is 27 and should be in the prime of his career, on yesterday's performance I'm not sure he wants to play for us anymore. Don't know what's gone wrong, are we blaming injuries ?

Long Wood and Barnes up top. Long balls and feed off the scraps.
Central 3 to block the midfield and narrow back 4.

Might be able to nick a win.

Utd couldn't cope with Deeney, I'd also pick this team and try and bully them. Sit deep and let Barnes win free kicks and we will do them on set pieces :)

Could swap out Hendrick for JBG and I’d be fairly indifferent. Obviously JBG is a better player but there may be need for a more defensive approach on our right hand side. And Hendrick won his last two games.

Wouldn't mind seeing this at some point.
Fits all 3 CBs in, allows Taylor some freedom on the left, keeps two up top so Wood isn't isolated, provides numbers in CM which we need...
Can't think of many negatives - potentially that it would drive us to sit deep with 5 at the back and the obvious move away from the tried and trusted 4-4-2.

Thought about Hendrick as the right side wingback as might be a better defensive option than JBG. We need to fill that right full back / winger / midfield this window. Left side is OK as I think Brady might work as well as Taylor as he has played left back occasionally.

I think it shows we have options other than rigid 4-4-2.

Pope

Lawton long mee Pieters
Lennon hendrick cork JBG(60mins)
Rodriguez Barnes

I know! It might be a controversial line up.
But we need to rest some of the lads!

To be absolutely honest: there's no evidence that DD could do a job for us in any midfield formation.

It may or may not have been a good idea to give McNeil a rest right now, as he's only young and he's getting through loads of work and is often our only means of taking the game to opposition, plus the games are coming thick and fast, BUT tbh I don't think SD can rest him just now as however you dress it up it will look like punishment for Boxing Day and that would be unfair.

Presuming the sports scientists having nothing to say (particularly about a young kid like McNeil) I think it's an occasion for the tried and trusted.

Pope
Bardsley Tarks Mee Taylor
Hendrick Westy Cork McNeil
Barnes Wood

This set up has worked well against teams who can be bullied defensively and who perhaps parent the tightest defensively. United are better than most of those sides against which it's worked, but there's a suspicion theyre vulnerable to this sort of approach and its definitely the game plan that gives us the best chance.

Hendrick needed to help Bardsley with Rashford. Taylor has a huge task against James and I do worry in these games about McNeil defensively, but on balance that's a risk worth taking.

Personally I don't think it matters how many chances he has, as he's just not up to it. Never been the same since he got injured at Leicester.

I know it is far from our best team and I wouldn’t pick some of those if this game was a few days later or if the villa game was so soon after it.

I worry about Taylor and wood playing again and then Wednesday due to recent injuries (Westwood too but he has to play as we have no energy otherwise), Bardsley due to age and Dwight due to how important he is and how tired he has looked.

I would prioritise the villa game and I would use this as last chance saloon for a few others. I know Man Utd might be there for the taking but the could equally steam roller our best side so I’d gamble and pray to every god available that some fo these raised their games ‘because it’s utd’.

The omissions are Purely because I’d be gobsmacked if after recent injuries Taylor and wood could manage today and Wednesday without risking further injury which would ruin our season. I’d also be surprised if cork and Westwood could manage another two games chasing shadows in a 2 man midfield

Given the amount of games we have played in such a short period of time, I would be tempted to try some of the U23’s along side experiences pros.

Pope
Bards, Tark, Mee, Pieters
Hendrick, Goodridge, Westwood, Brady
Barnes, Wood

With Glennon, Richardson on the bench.

Villa on New Year’s Day is a crucial game that we have to win.
