Enjoying the "daft reasons for missing cricket" on the BBC live feed. As a former village 2nd XI captain, I've heard a few good ones in my time. Our opening batter, a farmer was late once as his cows had escaped and he had to round them up. Had another lad who missed due to being arrested on Friday nights far too frequently.

Probably be out for less than 250 which none of us will be surprised with. Batting first on this pitch 400ish is par.

There's not a pitch in world cricket that is 400 par, for this England team.Granny WeatherWax wrote: ↑Fri Jan 03, 2020 12:39 pmProbably be out for less than 250 which none of us will be surprised with. Batting first on this pitch 400ish is par.

Re: South Africa v England 2nd Test
Same old story from England,3 guys get starts,Sibley,Root and Denly, and then find various ways of getting out,win the toss on this and you should be looking to bat for most of the first 2 days and amass 450-500,but this is clearly beyond this current England side.
I see Bairstow's finally been dropped, not before time it must be said, hopefully this will be the kick up the rear he needs.

Is cricket the only game where a batsman scores around his average and still gets slagged off?
Are they expected to play above themselves every game?

I think the point being made is their averages aren’t good enough for top class test cricket.Quickenthetempo wrote: ↑Fri Jan 03, 2020 3:03 pmIs cricket the only game where a batsman scores around his average and still gets slagged off?

There’s a difference between losing your wicket to a fantastic piece of bowling or fielding and losing your wicket due to poor batting.

Bess gone now
Bess is a bowler like Embrury who bowls batsmen in and Parkinson is a bowler who bowls them out
Can’t understand logic of picking Bess when he was not in original squad and Parkinson was
We are too negative in selection and when fielding
Always playing for a draw

Absolutely spot on - granted Parkinson might go for 4 or 5 an over, but he'll get 4 or 5 wickets too... its about getting 20 wickets, and we seem to have forgotten that.DAVETHEVICAR wrote: ↑Fri Jan 03, 2020 3:18 pmBess gone now

Best thing about today is listening to KP. Great insight into how he thinks and everything he has said is on point.

Still a good bowler but when batting now it is embarrassing so he has to go now

Feel a bit sorry for Root really. He'll get a lot of the stick but the fact is we are an extremely poor Test side.

Re: South Africa v England 2nd Test
This is the worst English Test side I've seen since poor old Ather's tried to cobble together a competitive eleven.
At least his sides played against a better standard back then.
I wouldn't pay this lot anything and make 'em make their own way home.

Time for Jimmy to get his first test hundred, which will allow Pope to carry on as well.
Re: South Africa v England 2nd Test
I like the look of Pope, looks like he may have what it takes to be a good Test player. Now we just need to find another 2 or 3 batsmen from somewhere!

I can't stand him. He still hates the remaining players from his playing days and it comes over too much. Half of it is he loves himself so much. The other half is he doesn't understand how players can't do what he did
Sky used to gave the best commentators around. Gower and Beefy gone with Bumble rested.

Re: South Africa v England 2nd Test
Picking Bess over Parky because he can bat a bit is a shambles of a decision. Hopefully Parkinson doesn’t end up being dragged around the world carrying drinks with no chance of actually playing.
Good knock from Pope though. Played a proper test match innings whilst everything fell apart around him. Had to throw the bat at the end.
Edit: Actually a no-ball, crack on Pope lad!

Re: South Africa v England 2nd Test
Just what are umpires doing today? There can be no excuse for not calling no-balls, it is part of their remit.
As was just shown, he had bowled a similar no-ball a couple of deliveries before but had not been called, even though he was way over the line.
I suppose the plus thing from that was that he wasn't aware, although he should have been, and then bowled another which cost him a success.

Re: South Africa v England 2nd Test
Yet another disappointing day with the bat,6 of the top 7 got in,and once again nobody went big,i hope to be proved wrong but i fear SA will post 400+ when they bat,the one shining light is Ollie Pope showing his potential again after his runs in NZ.

Re: South Africa v England 2nd Test
Statistically that point makes sense, but it's not how it works in the game of cricket.Quickenthetempo wrote: ↑Fri Jan 03, 2020 3:03 pmIs cricket the only game where a batsman scores around his average and still gets slagged off?
Are they expected to play above themselves every game?
In general the most difficult time to bat is when you first come in, so you're going to get quite a few low scores. Once you get past about 20 / 25 and you're "in" you therefore need to get beyond your average otherwise over time your average will drop.
You also need to take into account the conditions. If you're batting on a difficult green top or a wearing day 5 pitch against quality bowling, then getting to your average might be a real achievement.
However, on a good day one pitch once you've done all the good work and got up to your average if you don't then "go on" then it could be regarded as a failure, since you would need to equal your average in the 2nd innings too if your average isn't to drop over the game / series.
(Not sure that I explained that in the clearest or simplest way, but hopefully you get the point I'm making!!!!).

I was just making the point how fickle we are with the game. You can never score enough runs. Get a hundred and people demand daddy hundreds.
Hit a bad ball for 4 on 8 consecutive occasions but knick off the 9th and you shouldn't of played it.
Anyway great start with the bowling. Could of been 5 down with a bit of luck and normal slip placing.

Re: South Africa v England 2nd Test
Well there's some truth in that, but on the other hand Jack Leach got massive praise over the summer simply for applying himself. He was heroic. If some of the upper order showed the same tenacity and concentration then there'd be fewer complaints, and their average would improve.Quickenthetempo wrote: ↑Sat Jan 04, 2020 10:39 amYeah, I understand all that. I'd always applaud a hard fought 20 achieved in adversity, but I don't like seeing upper order players giving it away when they're well set.
