Sounds like something and nothing gangs of youths fighting with sticks . Anybody else on here used to have actual stone fights on their nearest rec with neighbouring areas kids. I saw a few nasty injuries, and this was pre 10 years old. I have the scars on my own head from this boyish fun. It was quite normal at the time for boys to be boys and practice the long throw of small rocks. Very genetically engrained behaviour practicing seeing off tribal threats.
Cue knuckle dragging neanderthal jokes.

No need, you've already done it.
Re: Trouble around Barden
Happy new year.
Re: Trouble around Barden
I said this tongue in cheek to the wife. She said get out of it.
I know it has sent a shockwave across the world but I am sceptical that is why the youths would be walking around with sticks etc. I remember a few cars driving around honking horns and displaying flags in Nelson on 9/11.
So I suppose you never know. I wonder who they would seek revenge on ? Drone pilots possibly or people with bad wind.

I live within that zone.
Generally it's a very good and quiet area.
If there's any trouble around there - other than crazy driving - it's usually related to the drug culture between rival factions, or family feuds.

Re: Trouble around Barden
It is. You've got The Oaks Hotel, the Rugby / Sports Club, the Prairie Leisure Centre /Golf centre / Bistro, Prairie playing fields, Reedley Marina, and the hospital, mainly surrounded by semi-detached and detached properties andopen countryside, with a way above average house price (for BB postcode).
99.9% of the time the main people you'll see in an evening are dogwalkers or joggers taking advantage of all the designated walks and green spaces.
Unfortunately however we do occasionally get people passing through or on the periphery who're up to no good. (In that respect however I doubt that it's any worse than any other suburban area adjacent to an industrial town.)

we all have different opinions but how can anyone say its a nice area. its like Beirut in parts. I honestly wouldn't live around that area if I was paid. in fact I wouldn't live there if I was paid. I try to avoid that area as much as I can even if that means a big detour.nil_desperandum wrote: ↑Fri Jan 03, 2020 4:31 pmIt is. Re: Trouble around Barden
No thanks, mate, coming from Nelson I'd a pretty good idea what the real world was like - and it wasn't shitholes like Barden and Nelson.
That's why I got out.
You should try it sometime......
Re: Trouble around Barden
I already did and my kids had a very different experience to mine growing up. But I never forgot my roots and I am still in touch with reality. Those shitholes still have real people in them who you seem to have forgotten.

Re: Trouble around Barden
Well it would surprise me unless there have been overnight mass conversions to Shia Islam. Unless you’re basing this on the ‘they’re all brown and therefore pretty much the same’ school of thought, you’re ignoring the war between Sunnis and Shias in the Yemen and the fact that the Saudis have been begging the US to attack Iran for a decade.
I tend to go with the boys vs boys theory.

Since when did you care about folk living in shitholes ? Christ, that concussion's taken a while to kick in.
Re: Trouble around Barden
There are decent working folk of all nationalities in those areas. I like them , I don't like the scrounging tricksters and bums from those areas that your slain leader loves so dearly. Minimum 16 hours a week work in the community for job seekers if they want their money. Put the extra money saved into public services.evensteadiereddie wrote: ↑Sat Jan 04, 2020 12:24 pm

It's true that the terraced houses at the south of this zone are not amongst the best, but having said that there are many much worse areas of Burnley than this, notably the ones immediately to the south, east and particulary the west of the zone!
However from just south the Prairie all the houses to the north, west and east in Burnley are good quality semis or detached (or bungalows) with gardens and relatively high prices, and virtually all the streets in Pendle, (boundary for Burnley / Pendle is just before the Sports Club) are Band D, E or in many cases F for Council Tax. So that's over 75% of the area highlighted.
It's a very good area and houses are selling quickly and for good prices in that area. A lot of new builds too at around the £300,000 mark on the old Lucas Sports Site, plus massive investment at the Prairie.
Lots of visitors to the Hospice and I don't think any of them ever feel even in the slightest threatened. Ditto the Hospital.
Why anyone would avoid Reedley and the adjoining area is beyond me. And please note that the police have intervened here AT THE REQUEST OF RESIDENTS who are concerned.
Re: Trouble around Barden
Nothing wrong with that area of Burnley/Reedley at all. I lived there for four years and enjoyed every minute of it.
I assume the people saying it’s a **** hole are confusing it with parts of Colne Road closer to the town centre.

Re: Trouble around Barden
I lived on Killington Street for about 6 month around 6 years ago, hated it so moved. Nothing to do with the reason above though, my reasons were we had no parking without a permit outside my own house and it’s the wrong side of town for me so took 20 minutes to get across town. Just didn’t feel like home up there having lived in ightenhill most of my life.

You are wrong, very wrong.
Your conversion is admirable.
From "Sieg Heil" to "Welcome, brothers !" in a matter of weeks - metaphorically speaking, of course, so please don't be offended.
It's a miracle, I tell you !
Happy New Year to you anyway, wherever you may be.

Re: Trouble around Barden
yes I know the area. prostitutes on the main road. drug dealers dealing in broad daylight. road rage at a high usually because of the young Asians In high powered vehicles driving like idiots down Colne road. then add the very high rate of burglary's, robbery's and thefts In the area. therefore, I decide to miss it out and divert around it. good luck if you live there. your insurance must be huge.nil_desperandum wrote: ↑Sat Jan 04, 2020 10:32 pmYou've either not looked at the map or you don't know the area.

Re: Trouble around Barden
All I know about Barden is a view from the canal and that is impressive. I often called into the Barden Mill cafe some years ago a peaceful table next to the window overlooking the water watching the narrow boats cheerfully chugging along it hasn't changed a great deal except the mill and it's cafe has gone. What I have noticed in recent years is that the footbridge that spans the canal just before the marina appears to be a meeting place for drug dealers, such a shame.

For anyone reading this thread not familiar with the area, be reassured it's quite safe and indeed very pleasant to visit the Oaks Hotel, the Sports Club or fields, the Golf centre, the Marina and the Bistro. You can also park your car without fear of problems at both the Hospice and the Hospital.
However, there's always a steady stream of "dubious" characters passing in and out of Reedley, due to their appearances at the Magistrates court, but they're always wearing their best suits and on their best behaviour for the occasion of their visit.
