Conor Gallagher has joined Swansea on loan. From what I know, we were trying to sign him permanently but Chelsea just wanted him out on loan.

If that is true, it doesn't seem like we've learned a single thing from our Summer of failure.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Wed Jan 15, 2020 4:24 pmConor Gallagher has joined Swansea on loan. From what I know, we were trying to sign him permanently but Chelsea just wanted him out on loan.
Securing his services on loan was a longshot, trying to sign him permanently would have been a complete waste of time.
Chasing after players that we like the look of, instead of quality players that we have a realistic chance of signing, is complete madness. The only thing it does is demonstrate a distinct lack of sound judgement and distance from reality.
Drinkwater wasn't a last day of the window panic buy, but he was very close to that. I would say that he was the bottom of our list, better than nothing emergency option, that we triggered when everything else went tits up.
If I had to guess I would say that our plan for this window, on the midfield front, was to stick with Drinkwater. However, he chose to activate his early release clause which spoiled our feet up and do nothing plan, forcing us to look at other options.
Hopefully, we have a few more midfield irons in the fire than Brownhill. I think he would be a good signing for us, but the longer it goes on the less chance we will have of getting him. Our money is only good to Bristol while they still have the time left to spend it wisely in the current window. If their spending options diminish they might as well keep him onboard ( helping them out for the rest of this season ) and sell him in the Summer when they have a greater chance of stimulating a bidding war. Another six months off his contract won't affect his selling price much and it doesn't look like he is chomping at the bit to leave them in this window.
Going into the second half of the season with only three midfielders will cut down our options in terms of the formations we can player and it will expose us to a big risk in respect to injuries. We really need a midfielder and we can't afford to compound our failure to find a suitable one in the Summer by repeating that poor performance again.
Re: BFC TRANSFER NEWS Jan 2020(MUST CONTAIN LINK)
Given our current league position the signing of Gallagher (perm or loan) would have been bad business
Paying more in Jan (than summer) for a young guy who was never going to replace Cork or Westwood seems a waste

Whether or not it was an unachievable transfer, I don’t know but perhaps he wasn’t an exclusive target and we weren’t just thinking for this season.
There seem to be a lot of critical assumptions in your post when there could well be a number of positive signs.

I'm not saying that we lack vision, but yesterday I saw a blind man helping our Technical Director cross the road.
When we were promised out of this world recruitment, we didn't expect our business to resemble a vacuum.
If the forward momentum of our recruitment strategy was any faster it would be stationary.
Knowledge is the key to success, so we hired him to learn from his consistent mistakes.
He promised to build us a palace, but all we got was a pig pen and a lot of porkies.
You can build a career out of cronyism, but it won't make you any new friends.
I was going to post those in the humorous football put downs, but I wasn't sure if home grown entries are allowed.

I find it hard to get excited about many of the options discussed on here.... Brownhill - could go either way, not sure we need innexperienced player at this level in a relegation dog fight; Gallagher - likewise & why bother to develop another prem clubs players... I would get very excited about Shaqiri though! Apparently Liverpool turned down a loan offer from Roma and United/AC Milan also linked. In the summer, the 28-year-old hinted that he may look to move on, saying: “I’m disappointed that I do not play anymore. Nobody likes to sit on the bench.
“It's clear that I want more time. I have to look at the situation and find a solution.”
would he consider Burnley?

Re: BFC TRANSFER NEWS Jan 2020(MUST CONTAIN LINK)
Nods, I just want to see some positive improvement from us in terms of our recruitment and the direction we are moving in. The current window isn't over yet and we definitely have work that we can do.
Nothing would please me more than an upturn in the performance of our recruitment and I would be one of the first to be complimentary if that should happen in this window. Not only would I be happy to eat my humble pie I would order second helpings.
Truth be told I'm desperate to say something good about our recently revamped recruitment department, because it is a very important part of protecting our future and I'm generally not a negative person ( quite the opposite actually ), but they aren't making it easy for me or anyone else to do that at the moment.
Like everyone here, I just want what is best for our club, which includes better recruitment.

If we make no changes to the playing staff or coaching/management expect more of the same. It’s broken and needs fixing. These are not tight margins that can be papered over.

Not if we shifted a few on? Or structured the deal with some cash up front?
Probably not, I agree, but £80k didn’t feel as bad as I expected it to be. Not completely out of the realms of possibility, particularly if it were a loan.
Re: BFC TRANSFER NEWS Jan 2020(MUST CONTAIN LINK)
Not signing anyone doesn't mean automatic relegation, if we can stay up without spending it would be the best scenario as we will have a lean start, OOC players left and could argue have a bigger budget both fee and wages wise.

Re: BFC TRANSFER NEWS Jan 2020(MUST CONTAIN LINK)
Having lost what was supposed to be an important midfield addition to the squad (Drinkwater) after the loss of an extremely talented midfielder (Defour), I would have thought it essential to get someone like Brownhill in. It almost looked as if it might be on the cards but here we are, once again, in a situation where it just isn’t going to happen. It has to be disappointing especially in view of the erratic form and injuries of one or two others. I was hoping that Brady might be ‘back’ after his well taken goal against Man.City, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. I must admit to being rather concerned.

Sick of saying it, but Ben Pearson @ PNE would be a great addition.... £13m (which i think would be the going rate for someone of his ilk) and PNE would find it really difficult to turn down.

I'm fully in agreement that we need an additional midfielder and frankly need to up our game in the transfer market, but this is all a bit daft.
Gallagher was clearly just an option, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. His move to Swansea is a little curious; it half suggests that something has gone on behind the scenes and that might have encouraged us to have a look at whether a longer term deal was possible. It would appear weve got another target in Brownhill and so weve hardly thrown all our eggs in one undeliverable basket. Johnson's comments today are exactly what you'd expect of a manager who doesn't want to sell - but who knows his club is a selling club. There's no bullish noises ruling out sales because they are going for promotion.
As usual, the right think to do is to wait and see what the state of the nation is at the end of the window. Brownhill appears a plausible signing and hes a good player. I'm.not sure its right to say Sheff Utd have become a relatively more attractive destination since the summer - they play a regular 352 with a classic 3 in midfield of which one is a sitter, one box to box and one the creator- Brownhill only really fits the box to box role ad I understand it and Lundstram has made that his own. Hes got a much more obvious route straight into the first team at Burnley.

Re: BFC TRANSFER NEWS Jan 2020(MUST CONTAIN LINK)
In all fairness, we only needed a good young left back, a good young forward and a good young midfielder in the last window.
If we do nothing in this window the next one could see us needing a good young left back, a good young forward ( if Vydra leaves ) two good young midfielders ( if Hendrick leaves ) a good young right winger ( if Lennon leaves ) and a good young right back ( if Bardsley or Lowton leaves ). Any additional departures would add further to our workload.
On top of that we could use some next level development players.
Given the way we went about satisfying our relatively small requirements in the last window, and how we seem to be going about things in this window, meeting a requirement volume of that size would seem to be a very big ask of our recruitment. If we can't meet the demands of a small shipping list I don't see how we can be confident about meeting the demands of a big shopping list. Integrating that many new players at once would also be problematic.
Sadly, I have a feeling you are correct and we won't do anything in this window. Even if we do have the intention of doing something I suspect we will wait until the last week.
We generally don't act until the last week of a window. Waiting to do anything, until we have seen the results over the next two matches for us and the other lower table teams ( like Villa, Bournemouth, Watford and West Ham ) wouldn't surprise me. Arguably we have the easiest end of season run in and we might be tempted to do nothing ( other than loan a midfielder ) if those teams post bad results and we do ok.

I'm not following why we needed a young left back or a young forward in the last window.
At left back, Taylor is first choice and in his mid 20s.
Up front Barnes and Wood were obviously first choice and we supplemented those two with Rodriguez.
When you overstate the case, you undermine it.

Because we had gaps to fill and younger players would have allowed us to reduce our contingent of older players. As it goes we spent about 12m on two players with no holding value, who might well be on higher wages than we could have paid to a couple of players in the early or mid stage of their careers.claretspice wrote: ↑Wed Jan 15, 2020 10:10 pmI'm not following why we needed a young left back or a young forward in the last window.

From a playing perspective I can see why we bought Jay and Eric, but from a financial perspective I can't. An even spread of ages is what we should be after, especially when our back up players could spend a lot of time bench sitting. Spending a fairly large sum of money to bring in two new players and giving them both contracts of 2+ years struck me as a wasted opportunity in terms of our long term finances. They will help to keep us up, which is important, but over the course of their contracts I would expect us to lose money on them. I can't see us selling them so that 12m is pretty much gone and we could have filled those spots with players that could have had a chance to increase in experience/value.
In the next few years we could be looking at replacing a lot of players at about the same time. Not taking the opportunity to do that gradually was a mistake in my opinion, but I respect the opinion of others who think differently.
