Lee Johnson (Bristol City manager) said he doesn't envisage any outgoings.
Probably counts the two lads we're interested in out.

Re: BFC TRANSFER NEWS Jan 2020(MUST CONTAIN LINK)
I'd be prioritising a right-back personally given the way Lowton has been this season.
Timothy Fosu-Mensah, just returned form injury, only 22 and played 33 PL games last season and is only on 15k-a-week at United. I can't see him displacing Wan-Bissaka or Dalot for their spots.

I remember when I first started following the Clarets the messages that regularly came out of Turf Moor: Brian O'Neil is not for sale, Ralph Coates is not for sale, Martin Dobson is not for sale, etc.UpTheClaretsFCBK wrote: ↑Thu Jan 16, 2020 4:06 amLee Johnson (Bristol City manager) said he doesn't envisage any outgoings.

I would take Lee Johnson's comments with a pinch of salt.
City are a selling club, just like we've always been.

A Midlands reporter saying we are bidding 5m for kieron Gibbs. We all know how dealing with WBA goes.

Never seen those links. Wouldn't have thought so.
Why would Juve and Bayern be after United's third choice right-back?

When he first broke in to the United Team he looked good. I remember thinking his athleticism and power might make him a good CDM. Had forgotten about him until now but it looks like he’s just coming back from injury. Could work out for everyone to loan with a view to buy in summer.

We've got a good knack at getting lucky when we have gambled.
And if we do go down, we've got a good chunk of resources to have a great shot at bouncing back.
If this few seasons in the sun has taught us anything, its we are a very reactive club, from top to bottom.

Re: BFC TRANSFER NEWS Jan 2020(MUST CONTAIN LINK)
Lets focus on left back for a second. We had a relatively young left back. We certainly didn't per se need a youthful signing - we needed good quality cover for Taylor. As to the economics, neither of us actually know the details of Pieters' package or the transfer fee, but the suggestions at the time were that we paid around £2 million for him. We won't get a return on that but that's not the only criteria, and there's no guarantee of a return on a much more expensive, younger signing.Long Time Lurker wrote: ↑Thu Jan 16, 2020 12:20 amBecause we had gaps to fill and younger players would have allowed us to reduce our contingent of older players. As it goes we spent about 12m on two players with no holding value, who might well be on higher wages than we could have paid to a couple of players in the early or mid stage of their careers.
From a playing perspective I can see why we bought Jay and Eric, but from a financial perspective I can't. An even spread of ages is what we should be after, especially when our back up players could spend a lot of time bench sitting. Spending a fairly large sum of money to bring in two new players and giving them both contracts of 2+ years struck me as a wasted opportunity in terms of our long term finances. They will help to keep us up, which is important, but over the course of their contracts I would expect us to lose money on them. I can't see us selling them so that 12m is pretty much gone and we could have filled those spots with players that could have had a chance to increase in experience/value.
In the next few years we could be looking at replacing a lot of players at about the same time. Not taking the opportunity to do that gradually was a mistake in my opinion, but I respect the opinion of others who think differently.
As for Jay - slightly different argument, but £10 million for a striker in this market is not very much money. Compare that with the £16 million allegedly spent by Southampton on Che Adams. The suggestions at the time were that Adams was going on £50k a week. Leaving that aside, that's more than half as much again for an unproven, rather than proven, player.
I don't disagree with the general principle that we need to reduce the age of the squad, and to begin to succession plan in key positions. But this goes too far. You're projecting an idealised, armchair view of recruitment and then criticising the club not for what its done, but for the fact they've not rigidly followed your ideas. I'm afraid that's just not credible.

If we signed a third left back before any other players then the balance would shift against Dyche. An unneeded signing when claiming poverty would be madness.
Re: BFC TRANSFER NEWS Jan 2020(MUST CONTAIN LINK)
Should this thread be renamed "Transfer discussion about what we need but will never happen"
I still don't think we'll sign anyone and with Drinkwater, Barnes and JBG all out that is criminal IMO.

I'd put my mortgage on us signing someone, it's just how late it'll get, how desperate we will get, and whether the signing will actually make any difference.

No-one is talking about signing a third left back, though. The point was about whether or not we should have signed Pieters in the summer (which is perhaps in itself indicative that this thread has strayed too far from a discussion about potential signings, and too much towards criticism of what the club has done previously).Quickenthetempo wrote: ↑Thu Jan 16, 2020 9:31 amIf we signed a third left back before any other players then the balance would shift against Dyche. That's what happens when you get desperate or cant land targets A,B or C.
If we get a few in with an eye on next season in terms of regulars, it'll also be a bonus if we go down but have the majority of players in and up to speed.
It's not only going to be a pivotal window for players, but the next 6 months for the whole club.
It's going to a bug rebuilding job what ever league we are in

With Barnes out we now need a CM, Striker, RB and Right Winger. At lot of business to get wrapped up in 2 weeks. I’m expecting a squad filler and U23 player but hoping we actually deal with some of these shortcomings that are coming home to roost.

Re: BFC TRANSFER NEWS Jan 2020(MUST CONTAIN LINK)
For me, given our slump in form and seeming relegation battle on our hands , I’d go for Watkins of Brentford and Bowen of Hull, failing one of them then Eze of QPR, pay the premiums and give ourselves a chance of survival, providing we add a midfielder too wether it be Brownhill or not.
This being on the back of an almost certain sale of Dwight McNeil in the summer wether we stay up or go down, therefore the fees are pretty much already funded.
Vydra is also likely to be sold in the summer, with the outgoings of Hart,Wells and possibly Lennon freeing up much needed space on the wage bill.
These types of players would bring down the average age of the squad, bring a new dynamic and potentially set us up for survival or instant promotion back to the Premier League.
We’ve also seen the release of Defour which was another hefty wage off the roster .
Wouldn’t it be great to see us have a go and show some intent.

This makes a bit of sense and it's a good point on the wages - the wages of players which have left recently (Defour) plus the expected players to go in the summer should cover wages on 2 or 3 younger players from the Championship making the step up. Worth also noting that if we go down I think we lose McNeil, Tarkowski and Pope but all for decent fees....but additional high wages off the wage bill.Hedontplayforyou wrote: ↑Thu Jan 16, 2020 4:27 pmFor me, given our slump in form and seeming relegation battle on our hands , I’d go for Watkins of Brentford and Bowen of Hull, failing one of them then Eze of QPR, pay the premiums and give ourselves a chance of survival, providing we add a midfielder too wether it be Brownhill or not.

The biggest stumbling block would be the fees that these clubs want for their players. Of the players you have mentioned, it is believed all 3 clubs want around £20m.

Thing is
What worries me about the club is that they are not willing to pay £20m when that is the going rate for quality players. So we’re never going to improve the first eleven, at least from players based in England....Jakubs Tash wrote: ↑Thu Jan 16, 2020 4:59 pmThis makes a bit of sense and it's a good point on the wages - the wages of players which have left recently (Defour) plus the expected players to go in the summer should cover wages on 2 or 3 younger players from the Championship making the step up. I would have though £15m would probably be enough to get each of those targets, I believe McNeil will leave next season if we stay up too. £30m plus the £6-8m being touted about for Brownhill? Bearing in mind not spending a great deal in the summer? Hard to believe we can’t afford this sort of effort.Jakubs Tash wrote: ↑Thu Jan 16, 2020 4:59 pmThis makes a bit of sense and it's a good point on the wages - the wages of players which have left recently (Defour) plus the expected players to go in the summer should cover wages on 2 or 3 younger players from the Championship making the step up. Can't see Hull accepting that and I'm sure that they can get a much better immediate offer from someone already in the Premier League (not saying us).
Not seen enough of the lad to know whether we should be after him but can't imagine we'll be throwing too much money around even with the injuries we have as players' prices tend to be over inflated in this window. I expect one or two smaller fees to be paid on a couple of older "proven" EPL players to fill out the squad in the short term. Not saying I want or agree with that approach but it is what I expect.

Re: BFC TRANSFER NEWS Jan 2020(MUST CONTAIN LINK)
The more I think about this the more I think we should now sell both Vydra and Wells. There are a few clubs in the Championship who will throw money at trying to get promoted. It looks to me that QPR have lifted our leg. This is the second season they have had him with no fee.-give them first choice but then get our recruitment team on the blower for both players. We have 2 weeks still to go. If we got £8m combined and took their wages off our bill its a great start in getting someone new in
Even if we got relegated neither of these two could emulate what Andre Gray or Danny Ings achieved in helping to get up promoted from the Championship

What annoys me is having identified Brownhill as a suitable player for us, we pull out of a deal in the summer so we can potentially get him a bit cheaper when there is less time left on his contract. Now when our need is greater, we still sit in the fence. It’s just not very smart

Re: BFC TRANSFER NEWS Jan 2020(MUST CONTAIN LINK)
I think there is a mini clear out on the way in summer regardless of where we are. I imagine the following will leave between now and next season regardless of division:
Tarks
McNeil
Lennon
Brady
Vydra
Wells
Hart
Gibson
With the possible others
Hendrick
Pope
That would leave us with a large rebuild to be done unless there are several youngsters close to making the grade. The only one I see at the moment though would possibly be Koiki to replace McNeil.
