Re: ARTICLE: Benson in Grimsby move
Really pleased for him, and the others, getting first team football. That's five now to Football League clubs which is excellent.

Re: ARTICLE: Benson in Grimsby move
I was beginning to think he would be the 4th central midfielder in the squad from an SD pov - not this season at least

Re: ARTICLE: Benson in Grimsby move
He'd be unlikely to get any football though as 4th choice. Being loaned out with the option of recalling him if absolutely necessary, probably a better option.Chester Perry wrote: ↑Thu Jan 16, 2020 4:38 pmI was beginning to think he would be the 4th central midfielder in the squad from an SD pov - not this season at least

Re: ARTICLE: Benson in Grimsby move
Great move for the lad and another fine example of just how far we have come as a club in the last 7-8 years.
I'm sure that one of the naysayers will be along shortly to explain why this is a bad thing and how it shows that SD has lost the dressing room and that is why all the youngsters are leaving

A really nice footballer. Looking forward to seeing how he goes playing League football. Good luck to him!
Re: ARTICLE: Benson in Grimsby move
Agree and he's one of the players from the current U23's who could eventually make the step up.Jakubs Tash wrote: ↑Thu Jan 16, 2020 4:51 pmA really nice footballer. Looking forward to seeing how he goes playing League football. Good luck to him!

The way things are going I might be tempted to take my boots along to the next U23 game!

Good to see the activity with finding clubs for our U-23 players. Can some of this energy be transformed to our main recruitment team with a view to finding homes for both Vydra & Wells with money coming in to our bank. I doubt whether these two players in a combined two year period have played more than 3 full games each for us
Lets face it neither are ever likely to start

Ridiculous comment. Can’t recall anyone ever coming up with such nonsense.
Please be aware though. Like all other human beings, Sean Dyche can and does make mistakes.

Could you not just give it a rest? This thread is about Benson going out on loan in particular and generally getting our first team football for some of our young players.warksclaret wrote: ↑Thu Jan 16, 2020 4:59 pmGood to see the activity with finding clubs for our U-23 players. Be interesting to see how he goes.
No real pressure on Grimsby, looking unlikely to get involved in promotion or relegation battles.

Mace Goodridge and Lewis Richardson. Lewis is still only 16 but he certainly knows where the net is and looks to have a promising future. I was optimistic about Ali Kioki but he hasn't impressed me in the last few games. And playing tonight for the U18's I quite like Joe McGlynn.JohnDearyMe wrote: ↑Thu Jan 16, 2020 8:22 pmWho else do you think could make the step up? Re: ARTICLE: Benson in Grimsby move
So difficult at times and players have good and bad spells. Ali Koiki, for example, started the season on fire and isn't playing anything like as well now. Bobby Thomas now fit and playing really well at the back and Oliver Younger, who is usually a centre back, was excellent at right back last Monday.JohnDearyMe wrote: ↑Thu Jan 16, 2020 8:22 pmWho else do you think could make the step up? Great to see, and will give Dyche a good headache come next season where you would think some may be ready to step up or get more in to his thoughts.
Chris Conn Clake also recieving good reviews and being noticed..

Re: ARTICLE: Benson in Grimsby move
Its gonna be extremely hard for any youngster to break into our first team or even be around the squad while we're playing at this level. They'll have to be absolutely outstanding, like McNeil basically.ClaretAL wrote: ↑Fri Jan 17, 2020 11:44 amGreat to see, and will give Dyche a good headache come next season where you would think some may be ready to step up or get more in to his thoughts.

Re: ARTICLE: Benson in Grimsby move
Pleased that so many are getting experience at football league level. Testament to the progress being made in the academy. Would love to see some of these youngsters make the breakthrough here over the next few years. Get some experience now, come back flying in pre-season and you never know what might happen.
Re: ARTICLE: Benson in Grimsby move
I dont remember many shouting form the roof tops on how good McNeil was until he was given the opportunity by default because of the injury situation. So you never know how good they really are.

Well some of us were. Dwight was standing out incredibly at u23 level by the time he stepped up permanently into the first team squad.

Mate is a big Grimsby fan. Said Glennon was best player on pitch v Orient away.
Apparently someone said he looked like he was thinking "why am I so much better than the other Grimsby players"
Great to have the young players doing well

We've all been there and want this to happen..after all, who doesn't want a good youngster to come through?ClaretAL wrote: ↑Fri Jan 17, 2020 11:44 amGreat to see, and will give Dyche a good headache come next season where you would think some may be ready to step up or get more in to his thoughts.

But I think you are setting yourself up for disappointment if you think this is the case.
These lads have been moved on to make way for the next to come through, they'd have to do a lot more than win some plaudits in League 2 to even get close to our first team.
We have proven top championship players on our bench, its not realistic to expect any of these to come through. If they were good enough they would be playing higher up, or ideally already for our first team.
I want to see youngsters in the first team just as much as everyone else, but you gotta be realistic and realise how large the gap is between League 2 and the Premier League.

Re: ARTICLE: Benson in Grimsby move
I could list you players that were loaned out to league 1 & 2 as youngsters and are now playing in the premier league.
It’s a slim chance but you just never know

Re: ARTICLE: Benson in Grimsby move
Wasn't Dwight on his way to Cheltenham but at the 11th hour brought in to the first team due to injuries?
But look all that to one side, the thread is about celebrating the great development going on in the background and people question our new training centre? If we get 1 potential per year from the crop of U23, then what a return that is, I personally think we will get more.
