The unsung hero

Post by cricketfieldclarets » Mon Jan 20, 2020 7:46 am

Chris Wood. Another vital goal yesterday. On 9 for the season again already.

29 goals in 83 games for Burnley at this level. That is some record for a striker who plays in a team the way we do.

Often looks like he needs a confidence boost. But have we had a striker as clinical at this level? Especially in the air.

He has scored more goals from open play in the last 12 months than Ronaldo apparently.

Totally agree.

It's not just his goal scoring for me. It's the way he affects our play, gives us an outlet in the channels which takes pressure off us when we need. The games he doesn't play highlights the way we try and play differently as a team and it isn't as effective.

Brilliant player for us.

We are better when Wood plays. No question. Let’s also hope that a run of games will have Jay become more effective.

Wood is very very effective. Like him.

I thought Jay had one of his better games yesterday because we played more to feet than we have done for some time IMO
But totally agree about Wood-if he had the speed of Andre Gray he would be in a top six side

Not trying to belittle the impact of Wood on our achievements this season but we are probably only better when he plays because of our style of play. If we were able to adapt or be more flexible we could just as well play better without him.

As for Jay's contribution, in one of ClaretSpice's treatise he points out the way Rodriguez makes us a play more on the ground then Barnes. That is one of the exciting outcomes of yesterday's game. It means we have a different way to attack. Let's hope that the next few games sees this possibility developed.

Thought Wood and Jay both did well yesterday and complemented each other. Helped us mix it up more than we have done in recent weeks!

Chris Wood is everything to this side. He’s magnificent. People have doubted him. His goals are impressive but his wider play is paramount to how we get around the park.

Think he was struggling with his nose again too. Did he take another bang on it during the game? It looks sore.

As soon as the game finished, he looked in agony with it.

Superb win and he took his goal unbelievably well but (and I hate to say this after such a wonderful win) Wood still really frustrates me with the rest of his general game. Using last night as an example, he often gave the ball away with poor control or a poor pass/lay off. We should have had the ball and instead Man Utd had it back and were once again applying pressure. These were simple things that Wood should really be better at too.

He puts bags of effort and has so much desire - I am not doubting that for one minute. But, like I said, I hate to say it after such a great win, let's not get carried away.....his overall game could be so much better. If Wood can improve these small details in his game he improves the team significantly.

Chris had many doubters in his first season, as does nearly every player we get, the one thing he's always had is an eye for goal.
I think his general play has come on leaps and bounds this season. He holds the ball up miles better than he used to, and his link up game the same. He's even managed to stay onside more often.
My big bug bear for the last month or so, was our negativity. it's all well and good defending the way we do, but when you get the ball you have to use it. Last night, and Sunday we got bodies in the box when we won the ball, and started putting the ball in there instead of passing it backwards. When we do that we are simply a different beast, and players like Chris and Jay can only benefit.

Vardy, Aguero, Rashford, Ings, Aubameyang, Abraham, Mane, Salah, Pukki, Kane & Sterling

Those are the only players to have scored more Prem goals this season so far, he is doing just fine.

If you ignore his goals and work rate you could moan he is offside sometimes :D

I wouldn’t say it’s tosh.

Put another way, it’s only those deficiencies that mean the very top clubs are not in for him because his goal scoring record at this level is excellent.

I do think he’s improving as well.

I have been a major critic but I must say he is becoming more and more important as each game passes.

Just my opinion. Like I said, I like Wood and think we are a better team with him in it. I'm just not getting carried away about his technical ability (or lack of it) and think it could improve.

everyone can improve, he has done well, better this season in my opinion as I feel someone sat down with him and explained the offside rule with little figures, he's certainly not frustrating me as much and doing well, Jay seems to be getting some understanding with him. Obviously playing a few real games together with pressure on helps build understanding I think, given the status I see the two together for quite a while barring another injury, which I hope continues to play dividends.

Jay's goal last night in exchange with Wood was really good, if ManU had scored a goal like that it would be repeated continually and the pundits would wet themselves. Of course it's Burnley and ManU are just rubbish at the moment, so obviously everyone expected us to thrash them there that bad!! That's right boring long ball Burnley, who just beat 3rd and 5th in the Table but that's because both those teams had off days and key players missing.

Making sure we've had a striker with double digit returns season on season is a huge achievement.

Look at the relegated teams of the last few years and you'd conclude while not a guarantee, having a 10+ goal striker really boosts your odds of staying up.

- Fulham (11), Cardiff (5), Huddersfield (4)
- Swansea (7), Stoke (8), WBA (7)
- Hull (4), Boro (9), Sunderland (15)
- Newcastle (9), Norwich (7), Villa (7)

If he can get 15 league goals this season, that would be superb given our likely league position.

Only 7-8 players at most, achieve that per season.

He's actually on target for 16ish barring missing games or a drop in form. While you are on about likely league position and strikers in form that bloke from Norwich (the one who sounds like a Taiwanese football club :D ) ain't doin half bad.

Yeah i suppose seven Premier league starts and four Premier league goals including the winner at Bournemouth, equaliser at Villa and two wonder strikes against Chelsea and Man Utd equates to 'fuckall' in some fans' eyes.
