Pointless. Unless you are going to quarantine yourself you’ll be engaging with people who will have been “on the strip” at some point over the Chinese NY so you might as well go and blow your money. Before you expire.

Worlds a very dangerous place at the moment. Fires, locusts causing famine in Africa, conflict in Middle East this almost has an apocalyptic feel about it.

I duno if this is a joke or not but me and the missus went out last night, we usually go to the Chinese.

As it happens we went to somewhere else with her mother and the kids. I remarked to her that it was probably a good job we did because it was Chinese new year and the place is always fully booked weeks in advance... I went past it in the car at 7.50 - prime time for them - and it was half empty!

I reckon people are avoiding them.

Telegraph headlines talking sh*t as usual. There is no cover up and China has been very open about this probably because of how poorly they handled the SARS virus where they did censor details until cases appeared in the West.

Telegraph headline claims possible cover up. But in the article

"Even state media, normally known to parrot Beijing’s line, offered a rare glimpse into the despair and chaos on the ground"

For China that's the opposite of a cover up.
If you are thinking 'Why are we only just learning this?' then you probably don't read enough news or it's too busy with 50p coins or Big Ben.

When people are getting their food from wet Food Markets trading in everything from water snakes to koala bears, it is hardly surprising that viruses enter the human food chain and develop into diseases that can incubate and be transmitted among the population. Chickens the last time, wasn't it?

Doubt there’s a cover up. Or much to worry about here.

But one things for sure. If / when I go to China I would only eat veg dishes. And I’m not fussy about what I eat. But even over here I just find Chinese food to be very suspect in a lot of places. And on top of that full of chemicals and sugars and colourings.

I’ve a stomach made of asbestos but it’s the only food that ever bothers me. (And it keeps me awake at night think that’s the msg).

Also in a lot of places they ferment their crops with human waste.

So I’d probably not even eat veg. I’d probably take a few tins of branston beans.

The 'chinese' we have here is a 70s hangover of the ideas of someone who went to China and then told a mate what the food was like. It's mostly asian inspired junk food.

Be like saying McDonald's represents all American food.

My partner is vegan and is sometimes in China on work, even if you speak a little the hardest part is telling them what you do or don't want and then when it comes checking if the soup with the chicken foot poking out actually is vegetarian.

No doubt it is. It’s the same with all foreign foods. Even Italian.

The one good thing that may come out of this is if it results in the Chinese not wanting to kill and eat every type of animal on the planet!

Avian influenza (bird flu) originated in the live poultry markets in Hong Kong and SARS also originated in Guandong (Southern China). These live wet food markets trade in everything from bats to water snakes and koala bears. China did not learn the lessons from the earlier outbreaks so don't hold your breath on this one being any different.

Why don't they just stick to sweet and sour chicken? :x

TBF my brother lives and works in China and has done for over 20 years. He's even had a house built over there. His wife and son went to visit her family recently in another (allegedly mostly unaffected) province for the Chinese new year and are struggling to be allowed to travel back home. Perhaps rather more alarmingly is that my brother was visiting over here for several weeks in the Autumn and left to go back to China the week before Christmas. Consequently you'll be able to spot me on Sunday come 2 p.m. because I'll be the guy sitting in the JHU with 20 rows of empty seats on every side!! :)

There was a mathematician on the radio 2 at lunchtime. Based on rate of infection figures from Chinese hospitals, there will be 11million infected worldwide and 2million deaths this year. 😬

There was also a virus expert on the radio. He's been out to test the virus. He said the masks most of the public are wearing will be ineffective because the virus can enter via your eyes or even the sides of the masks.

Well who knows? If they’ve picked the virus up then they’re bringing it with them. My concern would be the ability of the hospital in question to manage and control such a situation.

I suppose if a mathematician were to say "nothing to see here, this is not serious" he wouldn't get his place on the radio.

Predictions of worldwide deaths from bird flu ranged from 2 million to 150 million. In that case, the people who estimated 2 million were closer than the ones who estimated 150 million, so I suppose he is being optimistic. Maybe the 150 million people will be on later.

Incidentally, the number of deaths from bird flu so far is 407. Perhaps the crisis hasn't yet reached its peak.

Here's a thought. Bird flu was caught by humans from infected birds, in circumstances where people were living in the same room as their birds in a poor, crowded, hot and humid country. Swine flu was caught by humans from infected swine where people were living almost in the same room as the swine in a poor, crowded, hot and humid country. This flu has been caught from animals in a place where people are pretty much living with those animals in a poor, crowded, hot and humid country. In the first two cases, the virus proved that if you didn't sleep with your animals. it was hard to catch the virus. Chances are this will be the same.

Let them take their precautions, by all means, because eventually when they cry wolf there might actually be a wolf. But until then, nothing ro worry about.

The elderly are most at risk from virtually all viruses. Good a reason as any to laugh at people for getting old, I suppose.

The interesting thing about this virus, assuming it isn't contained, won't be the number of direct deaths. At the moment the case fatality rate appears to be about 2% - appallingly high - but that is very likely to be a huge overestimate resulting from many non-fatal cases not being recorded. It'll probably end up being a lot less than 1%. Still worrying, but not dramatically so.

It's the supply chain. The just-in-time global supply chain hasn't ever been properly tested. I was wondering if swine flue might bring it down, but on that occasion it held up well. It'll be interesting to see if it holds up equally well to (what looks to be) a slightly more dangerous virus than swine flu. I've often wondered how resilient the global supply chain is. (If it did completely break down, it's impossible to know the results. I bought a large bag of rice yesterday!)

Update 4th Feb:

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/

I assume this site isn't just making up figures. I've checked some other sources like NY Times, and the data seems consistent. The somewhat worrying thing is the small number of recoveries. Of those not currently ill (but have once been ill), 426 have died, and 653 have recovered. Of those currently ill, 14% are in a critical condition. I'd quite like to see 'recoveries' start to increase exponentially soon, because on the face of it, those numbers are absolutely dire. I'm still assuming there must be tens of thousands of mild cases that have not been registered at all (making the case fatality rate appear much higher than it actually is). I hope so, anyway.

On the plus side, Thai doctors are claiming to have promptly cured someone by administering Kaletra, a standard anti-HIV medication.

I must say, I'm surprised this thread has fallen to page 3.
