South Africa v England 4th Test
Shame to see Archer injured last minute and Bess left out but hopefully Woakes will come in and make an impact.
Great to see Crawley make a 50 and actually look like a nice start for us at 138-2.
Predictions?

Re: South Africa v England 4th Test
Great opening stand, and then it's slipped somewhat, the one criticism of both openers is one of them has to go big,100-150 and bat SA out of the game completely, but it's pleasing that England now have options at the top of the order,in the long term i predict a top 4 of.
Burns
Crawley
Sibley
Root
There is also the chance that young Pope will move up the order,i can't see him batting at 6 for much longer, and Denly won't be around for long,he's done ok at 3 generally, but it's time to give the youngsters a run prior to the next Ashes.
Stokes gone cheaply that's a big wicket for the hosts, what on earth did England have for tea

More like what did SA have in their tea ?
Re: South Africa v England 4th Test
Landmark 500,000 England test runs, well done.
Re: South Africa v England 4th Test
England just got their 500,000th run in test cricket.
Re: South Africa v England 4th Test
Ah well this is what can happen when you don't include a spin bowler I expect it would have happened to us Root can't bowl at both ends. I think it's been an ok day.

Stokes got in a slanging match with a fan as he left the field, bad language he could be in trouble.

Re: South Africa v England 4th Test
Root/Pope partnership at the end gives England a slight edge, need 350 batting first and given that we bat deep that should be achievable, crucial 1st session tomorrow a couple of quick wickets, and England might struggle to make 300,25 overs until the new ball,England have to cash in before that becomes available.
Pope's temperament impresses me he never seems flustered,Stokes could well find himself in trouble after his verbal altercation with a SA spectator.

Re: South Africa v England 4th Test
South Africa have left their spinner out as well.
The bounciest pitch in world cricket will suit our seam attack, just a shame Archer couldn't bowl on it
Root and Denly are good enough for a few overs of spin each

Re: South Africa v England 4th Test
The tabloids are suggesting Stokes told a spectator (who presumably gave him some verbals as he was walking back to the pav having got out) "Say it to me outside the ground you f****** four-eyed c***''."
Obviously he should've kept on walking with his mouth shut but anybody giving a departing batsmen a mouthful deserves a mouthful back IMO. He'll probably get some sort of sanction though - demerit point & fine I guess.
As mentioned, the game is back in the balance after a good England opening partnership gave them an advantage. England could still yet fail to get much past 250 if they lose early wkts tomorrow but could make a decent score if Root/Pope/Butler knuckle down and create some breathing space for the tail to whack a few.
Bookies have 370 as the likeliest score.

I’ve no problem with giving a batsman a bit of stick whilst hes in bat but I’d never boo a batsman off the pitch, you get the odd drunk idiot doing it at lancs league games but 99% of the time it doesn’t happen and that’s because they know the batsman could get to them.LeadBelly wrote: ↑Fri Jan 24, 2020 6:21 pmThe tabloids are suggesting Stokes told a spectator (who presumably gave him some verbals as he was walking back to the pav having got out) "Say it to me outside the ground you f****** four-eyed c***''."

Buttler can play when he has his head screwed on, but he's blown too many chances. Time to give Foakes a go.

This is how it should be: top 7/8 should get enough runs to enable 9,10, jack to have some fun & entertain the crowd (and pi** off the opposition before they have to bat).

No team has ever lost here with a first innings score above 380.
320 would of been enough against this SA side though.
We could roll these out for 180 no problem.

I'm not sure they'll even reach 180,72-4 with about 30-40 minutes remaining, another couple tonight and England could be looking at another innings victory.Quickenthetempo wrote: ↑Sat Jan 25, 2020 12:52 pmNo team has ever lost here with a first innings score above 380.

Re: South Africa v England 4th Test
88-6 at the close, this SA side have problems, but equally England have been dominant for the last 3 tests, and fully deserve their 3-1 win, which i'm sure they'll complete over the next couple of days,i don't think Root will enforce the follow on if the opportunity arises, there is loads of time left in the match, and the weather's set fair now, also it wouldn't do England's top order any harm if some batters could put more runs on the board, they've generally done well over the piece, but it's still a very inexperienced top 3,and getting some easy runs against a tired dispirited attack will only help their confidence, also the pitch will only get worse so why give SA any route back into the match, wrap up this innings quickly in the morning, and then rack up 250-300 in our 2nd dig,and set them an impossible target.

It's a poor South African team to tell the truth.
I think Quinton De Kock would get in any SA side I have seen though.

Re: South Africa v England 4th Test
Amazingly De Kock's the highest run scorer in the series from both teams up to now, however the next 4 are all Englishmen, that's the main reason England are walking the series, despite losing the 1st test, agreed it's a poor SA team, but this series will do England's young players a world of good,as the adage goes you can only beat what's in front of you,and England after their troubles in the 1st test, and the absences due to injury, have responded in fine style, what's impressed me is it's been a collective team effort, and not just brilliant individual performances, every member of the squad has played their part throughout the series.Quickenthetempo wrote: ↑Sat Jan 25, 2020 8:38 pmIt's a poor South African team to tell the truth.

No, not really. Bat them out of sight to ensure a series win and psychologically depress the opposition. Give the young batters time at the crease to play their own game against international bowling. Give the bowlers time to put their feet up. Allow the pitch to deteriorate and still have plenty of time to bowl a demoralised opponent out.

Great to see Mark Wood performing well with the bowl amd the bat. He is a really smashing bloke with no airs or graces and a wicked sense of humour.

Bat all day if we can, get 400 in front. Bat on tomorrow too, still 2 days left after today. We are up in a series so a draw is no problem (win is better obviously but it's the series that counts).
Try to demoralise the opposition and let the pitch get some wear & tear.

And some runs in the batsman that need them, I’d bat to 250-300, we can really accelerate after tea if needs be and fire a quick 100 on, put them in for 10 overs

2 days to finish it and win the series, I’d wager we will be done for tea tomorrow based on the way the SA have played with the bat this series
