Sheff utd £22m new signing
Sander Berg, anyone seen him play? Massive fee for sheff utd that.
Re: Sheff utd £22m new signing
He's quite highly rated. Think he's only 21 but he's played in the Champions league and already got 20 odd caps for Norway. Maybe we should ask their European scouting team for a few pointers?

To play devils advocate it's a lot easier to get caps and Champions League games If you're from Norway and play in Belgium.
I'm quite happy our punt on a 20 something lad cost less than half this.

I’m not sure they have European scouts anymore.
Re: Sheff utd £22m new signing
Yeah obviously, no guarantee this lad will hack it in the Prem either. Its certainly a good show of ambition from Sheff United though.CombatClaret wrote: ↑Thu Jan 30, 2020 6:06 pmTo play devils advocate it's a lot easier to get caps and Champions League games If you're from Norway and play in Belgium.

Did no-one see him in the game between Liverpool and Genk?
Quite a talented and powerful Norwegian box to box player.
They have paid a substantial amount for him, but he's only 21 years old and I think he'll do well for them

Sheffield United said owner Prince Abdullah took a "personal interest" in the signing and was "instrumental in the negotiations".

Re: Sheff utd £22m new signing
The signings of Berge and Brownhill are indicative of one club that has wealthy backers that can underwrite losses, and another that doesn’t, and has to be sensible.
We’ll know about Sander Berge. We just can’t afford him.
At some point the penny will drop.

To be fair Wilder took them from League 1 to the Premier League in 3 years with a net profit of £4m and to put in perspective his full spend in those 3 years wasn't much more than we paid for Andre Gray aloneevensteadiereddie wrote: ↑Thu Jan 30, 2020 9:58 pmAh, the Sheffield United fairytale continues, you know the one, the tiny club battling against the odds, defying reality to achieve unparalleled success.

They've now got some investment and Wilder has so far invested the money well and got them playing great football

What an incredible signing for Sheffield Utd who have only been in the prem for five mins. Real ambition.

The point being the football can't be that great if you score few goals.
They've built their success on being very good defensively.

Re: Sheff utd £22m new signing
You dont half talk some nonsense. They the play good passing football, have a go at teams and get players forward.
As a newly promoted team they do it in a controlled manner and defend well but when you can keep possession and push teams back then keeping the ball out of your own net becomes easier
Do you not agree that Burnley played some great football the season we came 7th then?

He might be fantastic, he also might be gash.
Huge difference in league, Trossard has hardly smashed this league up at Brighton has he? I’m far happier with spending what we have on what is also a gamble than £22m on someone who has to also acclimatise to the country and frenetic nature of English football.

Its supposed to be the higher fee payed the better the player but obviously does not always work like that but its a higher chance that he will be a better footballer than they already have.
I mean you are not going to get Messi for 7 million now are you.

Re: Sheff utd £22m new signing
Bold move from Sheff U this, if it works out well then fair play to them.
There's always a danger though in the sort of signing that breaks the mould. Berge was being linked with much bigger clubs than Sheff U only a few days ago, and that reflects that his profile is very different to the rest of Sheff U's players - to date their recruitment has followed a very similar model to Burnley when we came up, focusing on players from around the Championship who are similar to the players they already had. He'll no doubt be commanding very different wages to his other team mates and we've seen other teams struggle to make that clash work.
But - a statement of intent signing, no doubt about it.

Yeah i understand what you are trying to say but all full internationals and you could question the attitude of most of those.claretonthecoast1882 wrote: ↑Fri Jan 31, 2020 8:51 amSaying they haven't lived up to the ambition, if the fee shows you the ambition
But the ambition is by the club for the fans to see what they are trying to do not individual players.

Re: Sheff utd £22m new signing
Sebastian Haller cost West Ham £40 million
Re: Sheff utd £22m new signing
But once you make one signing like that you have to make more if you want to improve and that means you cant do it on Premier league money alone.
And with gates of 20,000 then there is the danger of FFP coming into play.
Re: Sheff utd £22m new signing
They are doing what we did - trying to gradually change a squad of mostly championship players into a Premier League team.
Sheff United’s wage bill is still significantly less than ours. Of course they have had an amazing first season but they know from the history of the league that this can change very quickly - and they did not have a squad like Wolves had which was already full of top class players.
Sheff United basically replicating what we and other newly promoted teams did should not be another stick to beat Burnley with. See whether they are still making transfers like this when they have a wage bill as high as ours - and even if they do it will be based on increasing their level of debt.

It's not a "bold" move from Sheffield United at all - they have almost unlimited funds. If this one works, good for them , if it doesn't, they'll buy a few more in the Summer.
You've got to love the "plucky Blades" crap.

So what do we all think about their latest signing?
They are not messing about; Europa League ambitions, perhaps?

Man U weren't messing about when they signed Harry Maguire for £80 million, nor Sebastien Haller (£40 million) - West Ham, nor Wesley £25 million - Aston Villa.boatshed bill wrote: ↑Fri Jan 31, 2020 1:51 pmSo what do we all think about their latest signing?

Pretty much all have been flops this season - for what they were expected to achieve.

Statement of intent means absolutely nothing. Glad you aren't in charge. For someone who has a lot to say on this board I'm surprised you put so much faith in the abstract.

Looks like they are giving it a real go.

Re: Sheff utd £22m new signing
All 3 players were wonderkids on last year's Football Manager. Makes you wonder where some teams are scouting from!
Could all be pants but in the last 2-3 years a lot of "wonder kids" from the game have actually started hitting there stride.
Tielmans, Emre Can, Goretzka, Jesus... Even Ziyech were some of the best young players you could get in the game over the past 5 years. Long way away from Cerno Samba days!
