I still count that £50k we received from Leeds (?) as one of the best deals we ever got....I’d have been happy with a fiver at the time.

Dog chasing a balloon, felt for him though because there was a lot of pressure on him due to the fee and he was simply a limited footballer that worked his socks off

Safe to say, most would reckon he didn't turn out to be the player we'd hoped.
Was it Tranmere his dad managed?

Awful striker.
Remember one game on Deepdale (I think) where the ball popped up for him in front of goal with the keeper sprawled on the floor. He had all the goal to aim at, basically just could have let it bounce in off his head, incredibly he hit the goalie from a yard out.
Dog chasing a balloon is right.

Crap.

Such a poor player. Ran a lot, nothing more. The £50k we got for him was the sale of the century.

Bang on. I saw the Moore £50K as great business. I have never been so baffled by any transfer business as the Saints offer for Thomas. When he started, he was averaging a red card every 6 games after 24 games if I remember correctly.

The greatest shame about the Moore transfer was that it seemed that Ternent felt the pressure of the big fee to play him. Payton was relegated to the bench and barely seemed to start many more games again.

Yep. Think that's the one.
Not sure if he ended up playing for his dad somewhere.

Might be wrong, but seem to remember him crowing about moving to a 'Big' club when he left.
Understated, as everyone knows Weeds are the biggest club in the world.

Think the idea was to fav Moore feeding off a big man.. There was the On-ITV Digital blowup soon after that left the club in dire straights so it never happened. Think Crouchy was lined up to be that partner by Stan later, but the riots put paid to Crouchy coming and going to Pompey(?) instead.

Yet he made nearly 200 appearances for us and played for England U21s. We’ve had much better since but we’ve also had far far worse. ( D Jones mk1 and P Stewart always spring to mind).

Stans not playing Andy Payton was spiteful and personal
Andy had problems and watching others with less ability getting game time didnt help him deal with these.

The Crouchy story comes from Stans book and it’s utter ********.

For a start it states Crouchys wife didn’t want to come to Burnley. He wasn’t even married

Presumably that was when he was at Stockport where admittedly he did look pretty decent. His 4 years at Burnley though he was mostly awful - the fact he made so many appearances for us was partly down to the fee and Stan’s stubbornness and also because we were not very good....though Andy Payton was ten times the player in every respect.
Paul Stewart was only here for a few months on loan - and was a far better player than Moore could dream of - but just not when he played for us....and Dave Jones was here for what ?...weeks ?....but he was worse than Moore I’ll give you that !!

He needed to do his research... Moore had never managed that in his career!

The idea was to have him feeding off a big man - He played loads with Gareth Taylor!

I remember one game at home when evey time Taylor won a flick on, Moore was running in the opposite direction. Taylor was flicking them into good areas and Moore was nowhere to be seen. Payton came on later in the game and literally his first touch was getting on the end of a Taylor flick on. The difference in football intelligence between the two was gigantic.

How he was first choice instead of Andy Payton, was beyond belief,Andy must have felt devastated, the fans couldnt believe it,the team and results suffered, denied his 200,Goals tally,Golden Boot Award still on display at Turf Moor,he was hard done by,felt sorry for him at the time.

Might have been but it wasshite delivered first hand by the manager of Burnley Football Club.As for not being married Stan would hardly be the first to say wife to cover girlfriend. That is done all the time... I’ve done it twice today with my ‘wife’ when I’m nearly 10 years divorced, and am talking about a new model. Not important.

Might. It have started but the windfall was being banked on. Burnley were not even sniffing around that sort of menu before the Digital deal promised a fortune to my memory. It’s collapse certainly caused all team building plans to stop.

Like I say from memory, if I’m out fair enough. I do enough digging through archives without doing it for fun, even when the answers are in the loft.

I would say CT is spot on the following from wikipedia

ITV digital 2001 Moore signed in 2000

ITV Digital was a British digital terrestrial television broadcaster which launched a pay-TV service on the world's first digital terrestrial television network. Its main shareholders were Carlton Communications plc and Granada plc, owners of two franchises of the ITV network. Starting as ONdigital in 1998, the service was re-branded as ITV Digital in July 2001. Low audience figures, piracy issues and an ultimately unaffordable multi-million pound deal with the Football League led to the broadcaster suffering massive losses, forcing it to enter administration in March 2002.

Brownhill's wiki page

Joshua Brownhill (born 19 December 1995) is an English footballer who plays as a midfielder for Burnley after turning down West Ham by laughing David Moyes in the face and then dropkicking a tree like the Kung fu master he is. Brownhill, while watching the highlights of Burnley’s 3-0 demolishing of West Ham, laughed intimately hugging Sean Dyche and repeating ‘I’m coming home

Absolutely. The phrase 'we won't bet the ranch' appeared soon after and lingered for years.

In truth we did very well (and got lucky) that we came through that decade unscathed.

Maybe Taylor was a good goalscorer but I wasn't looking back through a slight tint, it is a genuine memory from a game I was talking about - I was sat in the Jimmy Mac Upper at the time.

But as for Moore in general, he seemed to be famous for his pace but I don't recall him outpacing many people.

I think that he was with us long enough to have time to prove himself. It was a shame for all parties that it wasn't so fruitful.

A few premier league “spoilt” fans on this thread. Signing an England U18 & U21 striker was quite a big deal for Burnley at the time. He was a record signing and really marked the beginning of better times again for Burnley.

I also think he scored about 36 more goals for Burnley that the ballon d’or Vydra that’s so many people rave about.

Ian Moore used to play for Forest and Man Utd
