Re: Woodman
Not heard anything. We've started going in pre match for a bite to eat just recently.
No real ale on, which is a shame, because by their own admission it doesn't keep long, which
indicates to me that they are quiet and struggling a bit.
Time will tell I suppose.

Re: Woodman
Me and my mates have been going to the Woodman for years, mainly because it's local to us. Aside from match days it's almost always empty barring one or two regulars, but I don't mind as the staff are friendly and there's a separate room with a juke box and a pool table that's usually free. Not surprised it's shutting (often wondered how it'd remained open this long) but I will miss it despite not going as much these days due to relocating.

Re: Woodman
The last time I went in, Ken was running it,not sure if he still does.
The weekends were always busy. Packed on a Saturday before the game, packed after the game, busy Friday-Saturday-Sunday evenings.
I'm surprised to hear this, as I thought they had the regular crew going in to the pool room at night, and there were some who would drink there pretty much all day, every day.

Re: Woodman
What on earth will happen to the bloke who has been at the bar with his own silver tankard for 50 years!?!
Was a great pub back in the day. Played football for them with Hopey when Gaz Evans was the landlord. Happy days and great memories.
Good pub. But they do seem to be a dying breed.

50 years silver tankard, must be Derick. Great pub years ago, Tom Vida and Hengis the dog .

No, Tod road. Just outside the park and golf course, backs on to Burnley Wood
Re: Woodman
It’s a real shame if true - a landmark pub and nice building.
Is the Stanley or Rifle Volunteer still going?

Thanks, there was a Woodman at Calais in between hebden and tod I used to frequent in the early 70s , thought it might have been the same one,Burnley1989 wrote: ↑Fri Jan 31, 2020 6:35 pmNo, Tod road. Just outside the park and golf course, backs on to Burnley Wood

Re: Woodman
Sad news if true, The Woodman used to be a cracking pub, ( I'm old enough to remember it before it became open plan and had several small rooms with crocheted beer mats!). I've visited it on fewer occasions over the last few years, as the real ales were appearing less and less and the one's that were on tap were often poorly kept.
Re: Woodman
Gsyclaret the Woodman you refer to has had only birds (of the feathered variety) for customers for a long long time.
Re: Woodman
I went in on a Saturday night a couple of weeks ago and it was absolutely dead. In fact, I’ve never seen it busy apart from on match days.
The owners have got so many things wrong in my opinion; no real ales, expensive prices for rubbish lager, no sky sports, no live bands or themed nights, curtains always closed, outdated furniture. The list goes on. Pubs like The Woodman don’t stand a chance unless they attempt to modernise.
I’ll be sad to see it go as it’s my local and I’ve been going in for 12 years. Hopefully somebody else will pick it up and make a success of it.

Re: Woodman
Vida Clegg - she could be the most unpleasant of people at times but she and Tom did keep a very good pub. All the different rooms had colour themes and Vida crocheted all the beer mats in those colours.

Stanley went about 4/5 years ago. Rifle Volunteer is still going though. I believe now the only pubs in Burnley Wood are the club on Branch Road and The Butterfly.

Nail on the head. Theres not much of a reason to go in there unless you live next door or are on a bit of a burnley wood pub run. was a cracking pub when weplayed football for it. Had sky sports, pool room, regulars area, decent food and a good atmosphere.JoeAM89 wrote: ↑Fri Jan 31, 2020 7:52 pmI went in on a Saturday night a couple of weeks ago and it was absolutely dead. To be honest I forgot about the Brit because as you quite rightly say, what a dump! Only went in when I were 16 before games as we didn't get asked for ID and once you ask for a pint of lager and get given a can you knew it wasn't the place to go.

Re: Woodman
Don't think there is FD, certainly not after the match. However it does have 3 excellent real ales on tap, including the now rare to find Draught Bass.
(It also has the even rarer, 'Ducketts of Burnley' toilets, you certainly don't see many of them nowadays!

If we have any grub on matchday we usually go to the excellent Park View chippy.

They don't have any cooked food, sarnies etc but there's a good selection of crisps, nuts, packets of savoury snacks etc behind the bar and as Red rose says, the cask ales are always in good fettle.
Re the Duckets urinals, people have been known to call in just to see 'em.
And a beermat was once produced as a wind up which featured them and the pubs 'own speciality ale they produced'

Re: Woodman
James Duckett and his family, when they were well established financially, built the house called Woodleigh on Manchester Road in Burnley. The large red bricked house still exists: it is on the right hand side of Manchester Road as you go up the hill, about 100 yards down from the General Williams pub, on the same side.
Re: Woodman
Always went in the Forresters pre & after game, but now it's the Oxford, the poshest dive closest to the ground.....or is it. 53 years been going on the turf and not proud to say I've never been in the Woodman, havn't a clue why.

We were in there today too, enjoying a drink and their very nice liver and onions with mash and veg
whilst watching some sh!te scottish football match featuring the all conquering Celtic and Hamilton Academical.
All seemed normal to me, with a very warm welcome from the gent behind the bar.
