Re: POPE
Strangely I don't think the "big clubs" are necessarily the pull they once were for those already playing in the premier league.
Yes they can offer more money but you are not always guaranteed to be playing which can affect international aspirations and many players have seen their careers stagnate or die when moving to one of the "big six".
Look at Bournemouth holding off United when they were after King or Vardy choosing to stay at Leicester over Arsenal.
I'm not saying if Chelsea wanted Pope it wouldn't happen just that it is not the forgone conclusion it once would have been.

He's a Southern lad, he'd get a massive pay increase and he'd improve his chances of playing for England. I'm pretty sure if Pope got the chance he'd jump at it.Goobs wrote: ↑Tue Feb 04, 2020 1:34 pmStrangely I don't think the "big clubs" are necessarily the pull they once were for those already playing in the premier league.

£71.6m for Kepa and he's not good enough so they want Pope - who is obviously better

Re: POPE
He seems a very grounded lad, who is already in the England squad and I'm not sure he'll be able to improve his chances of being number 1 as it appears to be his lack of passing it around at the back that Southgate doesn't like rather than his ability as a shot stopper / goalkeeper and that is unlikely to change with any move.
Yes the money may be a factor but not everyone is motivated purely by that and who's to say that he wouldn't prefer to be here on very good money around players / staff he seems to like and at a club where he is rightly thought of very highly by those within the club as well as the fans.
At the end of the day if they come in for him and he goes then fair enough, we move on and trust the recruitment team to find a suitable replacement (we may already have him in BPF).

Re: POPE
Pope is a great shot stopper, great at commanding the box, is pretty good at distribution BUT does not do well with the ball at his feet. It seems like the rage is now to use the keeper to pass through when starting the attack.... to get the opposing players to press further upfield and free up space in the midfield. I just don't see Pope being able to do that. We don't need him to do that and most clubs wouldn't but I think chelsea would, which is why I think he stays here.

Re: POPE
That's a fair enough assessment Asheville tbh. He isn't ever asked to play out from the back in our team (and I'd have kittens if we ever started that caper!) but having sad that, if Chelsea felt they wanted to throw anything over 50 million our way I'd probably be taking it. It's approaching half our loot for a full PL season and we could build almost a whole new team for that the way we shop. AND Billy Mercer will do us right with a replacement, whether it's BPF or somebody else.

Re: POPE
I hope he stays but if crazy offers are made we will accept them,50 million and he will go, anything less then i think we should keep him, good English keepers are hard to find these days so we should hold out for a huge fee, i just hope we buy decent players with the proceeds.

I think anything approaching £40 mil and he'll be off.
Roll on 2 years and we'll probably be talking about the same thing, but with Bailey Peacock-Farrell.

Re: POPE
It was a great pass, but I would put that as distribution. I meant to say that some keepers are playing like outfield players (see Ederson and Allison) with the ball at their feet, which Pope is not one of them: very few are.
Re: POPE
I'm not sure about that. If he has really good form from now until the end of season I really can see a bidding war taking place. If that happens we need to dig our heels in, one of the big teams won't want to lose out and might just make us a sensational offer.Burnley1989 wrote: ↑Tue Feb 04, 2020 2:46 pmUnfortunately I don’t think we would get more that £35m for him.

What will put £££s on his head is if he gets to play for England in the Euros and does very well.beddie wrote: ↑Tue Feb 04, 2020 2:58 pmI'm not sure about that. If he is offered the same deal as Arrizabalaga who, according to the Mirror, is on a seven year deal worth £10 million a year, he would be totally insane not to take it.

He's superb at taking the pressure off for us. Collecting most corners and and crosses he takes away half the threat of the opposition, which is vital to us.

Top of the clean sheets(9) with Henderson.
The link is without last weekend but if you scroll down he had 11 the last time he played an almost full season.
Great keeper and I’d rather have him than the money.

It would still be a crazy amount and I wouldn't blame him if he went for an offer of that magnitude but some things in life are more important than money to some people especially when they are already on vast sums as it is

I was listening to an interview with Chris Kirkland. He said that when he had an English goalkeeping coach, all was well. When the manager (Rafa Benitez was the first) imposed a European coach, his game fell away. Moved on - English again, fine. New manager insists on foreign...game falls away.

Re: POPE
50m? We’d be mental to reject that. He’s one serious injury away from being worth a fraction of that.
We have an incredible keeper in reserve in joe hart and bpf up and coming.
If we got 35m I’d bite their hands off. Make do with Hart for a year while peacock proves his worth.
Imagine what mercer could do with him. And the club with the money.

Re: POPE
Tom Heaton comes from a club just relegated to the 3rd tier, Nick Pope comes from Charlton's squad in the Championship .... within 3 years of signing, they're both in the England squad. It's Billy Mercer we want to tie up on a long term deal ....cricketfieldclarets wrote: ↑Tue Feb 04, 2020 6:51 pm50m? We’d be mental to reject that. BTW, if Chelsea want an upgrade on a keeper that cost £71.6m eighteen months ago, then it's £75m please Roman, or £65m if you pay it all up-front !! Cue announcement of a new Cricket field stand .....
Ta muchly !

We do seem to have it sorted for keepers. BPF will be the next big thing and we won't be missing Pope.
Re: POPE
Barring Allison and Ederson, Nick Pope is probably the best goalkeeper in the league.
I’d certainly have him over De Gea and Pickford, and those two would easily command fees north of £35 million.

With the big summer rebuild I expect we are going to lose 2 of either Pope, McNeil and Tarks to raise the funds. Any 2 should bring in at least £70m to the purse.
Could be as many signings this window as the 09/10 one

As Arsenal, United and Spurs prove being one of the Big Six does not guarantee either of those "every year".
Like I said previously not saying he would stay or that he should, just that you never know what is important to people unless you are very close to them so it isn't a forgone conclusion.
Re: POPE
He was an incredible keeper up to about 2015, if you like. I'm not sure what evidence from his subsequent games for Man City, Torino, West Ham and Burnley, and England in the 2016 Euros, lead you to believe he still is.cricketfieldclarets wrote: ↑Tue Feb 04, 2020 6:51 pm50m?
