Southampton (a) - General Info Thread

Post by ClaretTony » Thu Jan 09, 2020 11:12 am

For any general information that could assist for supporters going to the game at Southampton - but not for ticketing or coach travel issues which are covered on other threads.

Making the trip down, first visit to St Mary's & going to stay the weekend. If anyone could recommend decent bars, restaurants and generally things to do as I will have a bit of Sunday to look about

Solent University is where I am parking for the hotel and it also isn't too far from the ground. £5 all day according to what I found online and about 15 min walk to ground (guessing a bit)

I’ve been based in Southampton Monday to Thursday for the last 2 years. It is an awful place, one of my very least favourite on the planet.

There is also a free car park other side of the river which is about 10 - 15 minute walk can't for the life remember what it is called though which isn't much help.

Will ask a mate later who uses it what it is called.

Pubs - the grumpy monkey is quite a good bar. Red lion is a good traditional boozer. Platform tavern is good. Restaurant wise, lots of chains at west quay. Little else. Ocean village has the harbour hotel and a few more premium nighttime spots. Oxford place has a few bars, quite lively and walkable from the football ground.

No not a valentines destination by any stretch of the imagination unless you’re staying at Harbour Hotel.

If you have free time then get the hell out of Southampton and go to the new forest or Lymington on the train. Or Isle of Wight on a boat (north house restaurant is good).

I used to drink in the Red Lion on a Friday lunchtime in the late 80's! Memories!

The one easily accessible that used to be a good shout is the Duke of Wellington. Nice looking historic building. Again, have not been there for many a year!

Are any of the 3 Wetherspoons away friendly? With the early KO my usual watering hole will have to be saved for after the match.

Train arrives 10.12

Giddy Bridge is nearest to Station and has always been away friendly in the past

I live in northern Hants and been to Southampton many times for gigs/sport/look round etc but, have to say, it's not the best place for a "touristy" visit. In Hampshire, the New Forrest, Winchester & Portsmouth are much more interesting visits.

There's a maritime museum (used to be located down quayside area but now relocated and named SeaCity museum). There are some city wall remnants (incl "King John's Palace") down the quayside area & an old tudor house. In all you'd be hard pressed to spend more than 3-4 hours looking round the major delights of this city but if that's all the time you have, all these things are within walking distance.
Not sure about places to eat nowadays but (as already mentioned) Oxford Street has a fair few (non-shopping centre area) places to grab a bite. For night time entertainment, a fair few bars/clubs in the Bedford Place/London Road triangle area;it used to be fairly lively down there of a weekend evening when I last had a night out "with the lads" in Southampton.

One thing worth doing, just for the hell of it, is the Hythe Ferry! Like a boat trip round the harbour but a small ferry to Hythe, across the water. Hythe has a long pier and you get a rail trip to the other end. Not much in Hythe but a walk around the front and back on the train/boat and all done. Pretty cheap too.

Try to park on the same side of the river as the ground. We had to catch a boat on my first trip down. Google said I was parked 800 yards away, well I was, but there was all this bloody water in the way..

You'd be fine in any one of the Wetherspoons pubs as an away fan. They all get very busy as you'd expect, Giddy Bridge is the closest to the train station and on the way to the ground so that'll be your best bet.

Another place that's not too bad and a bit different is Stein Garten down the bottom of the high street (46-47 High St, SO14 2NS). Traditional German beer hall serving food and 2 pint steins. Not sure how away friendly it is but I would be very, very surprised if any clarets had an issue in there. Nearer the ground is the Prince of Wales and the Chapel Arms, I would definitely avoid these.

Is anybody actually going on the train , given the kick off time. Just wondering if anyone would be having a drink near the station
