No better than naming your own farts if you ask me.
Re: Storm Ciara
Who is indulged by storms having names? Is it the name-giver(s)? How are they indulged? They're in the business of communicating weather information. Names make weather events fairly clear; makes folk more attentive, more receptive to the information.

Ha! Storm naming convention doesn't entreat one supplant basic vernacular. Relax. Rain is still rain. Wind is still wind. You are still simple.

It's indulgent of the weathermen.
I don't care what the wethermen say. If the weathermen say it's Dwayne-ing. You'll never hear me complaining.

Saw one which made me laugh the other week ... "Why are storms always named after women ?" The reply was
" If it was named after a bloke it would only last 3 f--king minutes !! "
On a serious note seen some scary looking pictures and videos from Stubbins, near Ramsbottom this morning

What happened to just having “ a few days of heavy rain and wind” ? seems nowadays every storm has to have a name ,a backstory and the almost hysterical pant wetting excitement of the weather people

Seeing as most of the local areas are flooded, I would say they are justified.

Quite a lot of flooding in Accrington water pouring out of front doors near the old Stanley Street Club. Fox hill woods looking like Louisiana. Dread to think what low lying areas of Rossendale and Cliviger are going through.

Problem is woefully inadequate drainage for all the new development (hard landscaping etc) & the fact that rainfall volumes are expected to rise by at least 40% in the next 100 years. I live on high ground near York, but we’ve almost flooded twice in the last two years - due to inadequate sewers!!

Anyone in Flood zone 2 should move asap. We’re well into zone 1 & I’m seriously thinking of moving. Government knows that trees must be planted upstream, but serious landowners are not keen due to loss of income. Makes my blood boil - down with the aristocracy!!!

Don’t worry you will be able to claim from the EU flood relief fun.... ohh wait a minute...

Re: Storm Ciara
There was a reason builders didn’t originally build on flood plains. Plenty of developments on them now as the land is cheap. Drainage systems and natural drainage now doesn’t do the job properly.

Re: Storm Ciara
In Europe they build storm channels around major conurbations or can put barriers up quickly with advance warning. It’s all down to finance. In England it is left to the insurance companies.
I’ve often wondered why they don’t CPO a farmers field, upstream of the problem area, and dig a giant hole. Divert into it with flood levels and pump it back out when emergency over. Must be too obvious so back to finance.

Re: Storm Ciara
Not sure how you managed 25 minutes. It’s dry and sunny here just now so I took advantage to go down to the shop. It was a massive struggle to walk there and back because of the strong winds.Jakubs Tash wrote: ↑Sun Feb 09, 2020 11:46 amI've just tried to play football in it....match abandoned after 25 minutes. I can recall caravans being blown off cliffs in Cornwall by hurricane Charlie over 30 years ago*, so 2015 can't be right.
