Southampton game v weather !
current forecast is 60 mph winds and heavy rain, fair chance the game could be postponed if that actually occurs
Re: Southampton game v weather !
They don't call televised games off unless it's an absolute last resort.

Not sure what last week was, but lunchtime is saying heavy rain and 61mph gusts, that sounds pretty bad to me

Last Sunday morning was horrendous. By the afternoon they could have probably played it but they had to make a decision.

Met saying Wind between 31-54mph with 80% chance of rain for same period so not looking likely to be nice, which I think suits us more than them so hopefully it'll be on.

Plenty of practice for it at Bournemouth earlier this season.
Same result would be just perfect.

Re: Southampton game v weather !
The saving grace is that it should be relatively dry down here through Thursday, Friday and Saturday up to 11.00 ish so there shouldnt be any waterlogging before the game.
Hopefully the wind wont be as bad as the forecast, see what the forecast for Saturday is in a couple of days time.

Our home game against them, was extremely windy.....remember Barnes' goal.
Re: Southampton game v weather !
Was it the home game against Southampton where their centre half lost the flight of the ball and it bounced very kindly for us?
Bodes well!

Re: Southampton game v weather !
Would seem to me the game could become farcical if winds/ gusts of winds were anything above 50 mph. Okay if we win,of course, but plenty to moan about if we didn't. Not acceptable once any game becomes no more than a lottery for me.

Sorry, wasn’t aware you had all the data. What was given out on television relating to the postponement varied considerably from your figure.Granny WeatherWax wrote: ↑Wed Feb 12, 2020 6:02 pmConsistent winds of 67kmph, much like Saturday will be.

That’s OK then, because Southsea is the last resort, until you get to the IoW.

Will they water the pitch?
Re: Southampton game v weather !
My first game of the season. Having to sit in the Southampton end, been told I have to sit on my hands for the game. Could be hard, Just hope the trains will be running between Bath and Southampton.

Re: Southampton game v weather !
Looks about 50/50 I’d imagine a late decision as localised weather can change in severity either way .
Re: Southampton game v weather !
The forecast on yr.no (which is far less alarmist than the BBC) is for half an inch of rain between now and kickoff, and for winds of about 20-25 mph at kickoff time. Doesn't mention gusts, but I doubt they will be gusting at 61 mph.

Met Office.
No warning for wind.
Amber for rain but after 3pm. They’ll be in the shower by then and won’t care.

Re: Southampton game v weather !
Winds not expected to be quite as strong as last week, but prolonged heavy rain on already saturated ground will cause (more) major flooding issues. The early k.o. may save our game as I believe it's expected to hit sometime in the afternoon.

As long as the grass is kept long and they don't water the pitch

Re: Southampton game v weather !
These bowl grounds become like, well bowls and swirl the wind around. If anything even something tiny fell off a roof and touched someone the home club would be in serious trouble and could be sued for an amount of pounds. Got to cover yourself these days and then some, it’s not 2007 anymore. Could very well be postponed.

Isn't it a question of public safety in and around the ground rather than playing conditions?

One other factor could be that the squad are meant to be flying down on Saturday. If conditions are that bad in Manchester or Southampton, could the flight be cancelled.......?

Sky/BT pay over 10 million a game. It would take quite a few to die to not be cost effective.thelaughingclaret wrote: ↑Thu Feb 13, 2020 8:52 pmThese bowl grounds become like, well bowls and swirl the wind around. It won't be called off on momentary grounds. There would have to be a genuine threat to life to call it off.
Re: Southampton game v weather !
I remember seeing pitches of Turf Moor in the sixties when it was a mass of mud, but I reckon most grounds have improved since then. How many matches have been called off for waterlogged pitches in the Premier League this season? None?Dark Cloud wrote: ↑Thu Feb 13, 2020 7:58 pmWinds not expected to be quite as strong as last week, but prolonged heavy rain on already saturated ground will cause (more) major flooding issues. So the question is, is that because (a) it has been a very very dry winter with no reason for the pitches to get wet; or (b ) because the pitches have got a lot better?
It won't be rained off. Promise.

Re: Southampton game v weather !
BBC reporting lower chance of rain now but winds still around 65mph - Met Office reckon more chance of rain but winds a bit lower at 25mph with gusts up to 50mph.
There are warnings on the motorway down here of severe weather tomorrow but other than a couple of main roads that get flooded the travel conditions don't tend to get too badly affected by it
