from telly obvs:

pope - 8 great handling in the worst conditions for a keeper, big chest at the end

bardsley - 7 sound

tarkowski - 9 imperious

mee - 9 same - what a partnership these two have

taylor - 9 thought he was outstanding again, wish hendrick had gambled on his cross in the 2nd half

westwood - 8 probably the worst corner he's taken all season and its gone in.

cork - 8 difficult game in central midfield today, always going to be a bit scrappy but both of our lads did a really strong job in there, seemed more alive to everything than their opponents

hendrick - 8 lovely ball into vydra for the winner, worked hard all game - a key player

mcneil - 7 showed some real moments of quality and did the hard yards defensively

wood - 6 only just on long enough

rodriguez - 8 worked hard all game up top and did well to force mccarthy into a save later on

vydra - 8 what a goal. his chance has been a long time coming but he's vvery much taken it.

high marks account or the conditions which are the worst for a game of football.

a superb performance defensively and always a threat going forward. brilliant.

The weather was atrocious but didn’t look too bad on tv until they showed images of fans in the upper stands.

So, taking the difficulty into account...

Pope 8
Taylor 8+
Mee 9
Tarks 9
Bardsley 8
McNeil 8
Westwood 7
Cork 7
Hendrick 7+
Jay 8
Wood 7 - hope he is ok
Vydra 8 - great goal

First double over Southampton since 1947 ( the year I was born ! )
Awful conditions so marked accordingly

Pope 8. Big chest save late on
Bardsley 7 did his job
Tarks 10. Total quality
Mee 9. Slight error for Ings goal and a bit lucky with possible pen
Taylor 8 off the pace early then dominated
Hendrick 8
Cork 9 worked his ass off and has never been on the losing side in this fixture according to match coms !
Westwood 8 what a goal !!
McNeil 7 Saints triple marked him and he still caused them problems
Wood 6
J Rod 8 Settling in now and working so hard

Vydra 9. Poor upto half time but what a goal. Goals win games and that was world class

Fantastic. Even coped with getting wet walking back to the car. Fully deserved win in the end and probably as good a win as we’ve had all season against a team who are in good form.

Only on here could a player get 9s, yet responsible for conceding a goal, imagine if that was Lowton or Hendrick

Tough one I thought (defence aside) we were really quite poor albeit in atrocious conditions first half. Second half much more like ourselves and created some really good opportunities.

Pope 7
Bardsley 7
Mee 8
Tarks 8
Taylor 7
McNeil 6
Cork 6 (got say I thought he was so so bad first half I was ready for 3, but second half much better and we won)
Westwood 7 grew into the game second half
Hendrick 7
Jay rod 6
Wood 6

Vydra 8, worked hard scored a sublime goal played jay rod in well and has another two efforts

Superb result on a day which was always going to be more about mentality than technical ability given the conditions.

Pope - 7 - superbly protected by the back four, but made one superb save in the 89th minute abs handled pretty assuredly whenever needed.

Bardsley - 8 - just the man for the conditions and provided a sure steady shift.

Taylor - 8 - in great form right now and apart from misjudging one cross late on in the wind when Pope saved well, he was immaculate defensively and sharp going forwards.

Tarkowski - 9 - couple of unnecessarily ambitious passes ceded possession in the first half, but otherwise flawless.

Mee - 9 - read the game and the conditions absolutely supremely. A masterclass in how to deal with adverse conditions.

Hendrick - 8 - super ball to Vydra got through a mountain of work, even if he like the rest of the midfield could have been more composed in possession despite the conditions.

Westwood - 7 - scrapped hard although he will be a bit disappointed with his use of the ball at times.

Cork - 7 - see Westwood

McNeil - 7 a few flashes but not really his day, but he did the ugly stuff creditably.

Wood - 6 - barely on long enough. We missed him when he went off and hopefully it's a short absence.

Rodriguez- 7 - worked hard, linked the play nicely on occasions but a tough day to lead the line.

Vydra - 7 - wonderful goal and there were a couple of other occasions when he got the ball in a bit of space and showed a lovely touch, but there was also plenty of evidence for those who suspect that overall hes a bit weak with his back to goal, and not quite quick enough to run the channels, at this level. But conditions were tough and at a personal level it was wonderful to see him get that goal.

Conditions were clearly atrocious so playing constructive football was always going to be tough, but this was another triumph for Dyche's mantra of "finding a way". Southampton played by far the more constructive football irrespective of the conditions, but their neat approach play invariably founded on the immovable object that was our back four, and in the second half our resilience shape and willingness to counter attack saw us create clearly the better chances.

That should be enough to all but guarantee another season at this level - superb achievement given where we were on new years day.

Pope. 7. Not much to do. Good save at the end
Bardsley 8. Very solid, kept things very tight
Mee 9. Simply outstanding
Tarks 9. See Mee
Taylor 7. Did well but they had more joy down this side than the other
Westwood 8. Helped nullify Southampton in the second half
Cork 8. See Westwood
Mc Neil 6. A few flashes of brilliance but was getting the ball far too deep
Hendrick 9. Excellent defensively and some good forward moments including for the goal
Wood 6. Not enough time
Jay 7. Held the ball well

Vydra 7. Great goal

I believe all players start with +3 when we get 3 points... :D

and, maybe generously only -2 when we get nil points :(

3 great points today for the Clarets.

I'm with BT Sport - Tarks mom.

Bit surprised to see BBC awarded mom to Ben Mee. I think Ben could have done better for Danny Ing's goal.

Grumps - how I saw it

Ben Mee intercepts the ball, goes again to challenge only for cork to get in his way meaning neither make a challenge.
How on Earth is that a big mistake?
If hadn’t have made the first interception fine but not sure how a reactive interception and someone getting in his way of making a response is a mistake

Cost a goal, so yes, a big mistake, only one, but its one every game to be fair, rest of the time he's good, but it's those mistakes that have kept him at Burnley, and out of the England team

Pope 7 ok but caught napping when they hit bar
Bards 8 solid and tight
Tarks 9 very good indeed typical Tarks show
Mee 8 great in the air and looked confident
Taylor 8 good defensively and good work down the flank
Hendrick 7 good ball for goal but bit wayward worked hard
Westwood 8 + 1 for goal grafted in tough conditions
Cork 7 always running and can’t fault his effort
McNeil 7 some nice touches and change of pace but can drift a bit
Rodriguez 8 always lively and a threat when he’s in possession
Wood 5 NA

Vydra 8+ 1 for goal rare chance to shine and great goal

Nah not for me - this is ridiculously harsh.

For me, it's an interception to a through ball that breaks kindly to Ings. If anyone might do more for us its Cork, but even that is a stretch. As for Meex he is stretching, in slippery conditions and to expect him to do more than just make the interception is the sort of thing that's easily said from the sofa or in the stands.

But each to their own.

My thoughts are he tried to play it out, instead of getting rid and wacking it upfield at the first opportunity, especially in the conditions.

Cost a goal, so yes, a big mistake, only one, but its one every game to be fair, rest of the time he's good, but it's those mistakes that have kept him at Burnley, and out of the England team
Wow - seriously ?
It was not even a half chance he gave away.
It was a brilliant goal by Ings.

If that’s your definition of mistakes giving away goals then most defenders in the league are doing it every week.

They probably are, but not getting ratings of 9,which is the point

Fantastic result, not a fantastic game, but in those conditions it was never likely to be.
We deserved it for our attitude in the face of the storm, limited Saints to crumbs so Ben deserves the mom

There is absolutely no way hes trying a pass there. Or at least, none of us know for sure but it looks to me highly unlikely and requires a huge amount of mind reading.

At worst hes trying to block it in a way which gives him a second touch to whack it, but I don't even think that's accurate. It's a tgeough ball played from within a yard of him and his first thought is to make sure it doesn't reach its target. He does that, reacting instinctively, and is a bit unlucky with the bounce. But even then hes conceding possession 20 yards from goal with plenty of men gowl side.

I'd that's a mistake that caused a goal then theres literally never a goal that's not an error. You've picked the wrong target for a crusade here, IMO.

It’s not the point though as you are marking him lower because you think he gave away a goal which he very clearly didn’t.
Is there anyone else in the media who has said it was anything else but a very good goal rather than a burnley mistake ?
It’s not even clear that Mee could have booted it up the pitch and Ings has scored that goal out of virtually nothing.

If you were being ultra critical you could say when Cork got in his way a bit Mee had the chance to take everything, including his own team mate. But to lunge in there would have been stupid really, Ings still had a hell of a lot to do when he picked the ball up. Very harsh to put any blame on Ben Mee for that one.
